Concomitant parasitism with Plasmodium spp. and Wuchereria bancrofti was examined in Orissa, India, to study the influence of one parasite infection on the other in human communities. A survey of 1815 nocturnal blood films in 11 villages indicated an overall prevalence of 9.6% for malaria and 8.5% for microfilaraemia. Only 0.3% of the population harboured both parasites. Analysis of the expected and observed distribution of cases of dual infection in each village did not indicate any significant interaction between the 2 infections. The malarial vector density in 3 selected villages correlated…

The immunoreactivity to saline- and detergent-extracted filarial antigens of 31 Haitian subjects exposed to or infected with Wuchereria bancrofti was analysed. Cellular reactivity, monitored by blastogenesis in vitro, was significantly greater to a soluble extract of Brugia pahangi than to a detergent-extracted antigenic preparation. In contrast, serum antibody levels against the detergent extract were significantly higher. These differences were consistently observed in symptomatic, microfilaraemic, and asymptomatic/amicrofilaraemic groups of patients. These patterns of immunoreactivity may r…

From june 1985 to may 1986, 1.209 consulting patients were examined for filariae in skin and blood. Among patients with microfilariae 17% had associations of filarial infections. The multiple infections rate seemed more important in man than woman and increased with age. The results showed that associations were not due to chance only. The frequencies of associations between Dipetalonema perstans and Onchocerca volvulus at one hand, Dipetalonema perstans and Wuchereria bancrofti on the other hand were highly significant. Symptoms of filarial associations were studied and subsequent therapeutic…

Chyluria is clinically described as passage of milky urine. Chyle is absorbed by intestinal lacteals and is composed of emulsified fats, few proteins, and fibrin in varying proportions. Parasitic chyluria is caused mainly by Wuchereria bancrofti infection. The incidence of chyluria in pregnancy is not uncommon in endemic regions. The literature pertaining tomedical management of chyluria in pregnancy is scant. The antifilarial drugs have potential teratogenic risk and are not recommended in pregnant patients. Hence, there is a management dilemma for managing patients with chyluria during pregn…

The lectin-binding properties of microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus, O. lienalis, Brugia pahangi, Wuchereria bancrofti, Dirofilaria immitis, and Monanema (= Ackertia) marmotae share a number of characteristics. Carbohydrates specific for lectins are associated with the egg shell or sheath. N-acetyl-D-glucosamine is the predominant carbohydrate associated with the ensheathed forms with lesser quantities of D-galactose and/or alpha-lactose and D-galactosamine. The density of these carbohydrates on the sheath surface diminishes as the larvae undergo normal growth and development. Similar carboh…

A day blood smear survey for Mansonella ozzardi in the north coast communities of Trinidad recorded a prevalence of 4.8% in 4,488 persons examined. Prevalence rates were highest in the four western-most communities, where the vector, Culicoides phlebotomus, is a severe nuisance problem. Prevalence rates increased with age and were higher in males than in females. Mean microfilaria densities were low in both sexes up to 50 years of age but in older males the density increased with age. Wuchereria bancrofti infections were detected in five of the ten communities surveyed.

BACKGROUND: Microfilaria is a major public health problem in tropical and subtropical countries and is an endemic problem in India. Wuchereria bancrofti is the commonest filarial infection. In some lesions, microfilariae and adult filarial worm have been incidentally detected in fine-needle aspirates.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35 year old hindu female presented with lump in upper outer quadrant of left breast. Fine needle aspiration revealed two adult gravid female filarial worms.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge this is the first ever case report to demonstrate two live gravid female and embryoid fo…

The occurrence of microfilaria in pleural fluid is rare. Filarial lung involvement occurs in the form of Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia with pulmonary infiltrates and peripheral eosinophilia. We report a 74-year-old male patient, non smoker who was admitted to our hospital with breathlessness and chest discomfort of two weeks duration. He had, eosinophilia and deranged renal function. X-ray chest revealed massive left sided pleural effusion. Pleural fluid analysis revealed atypical cells and pleural fluid cytology showed microfilaria (Wuchereria bancrofti), which were also found on peripheral…

Filariasis is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas and is endemic in regions of India. Lymphatic filariasis in India is caused mainly by two species of nematodes: Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi, which invade the human lymphatic system. We report two cases of superficial cystic lesions of the upper limb revealed on fine needle aspiration (FNA) to be clinically unsuspected filariasis. Despite similar aetiologies, both cases revealed variations in aspirate nature, smear morphology and peripheral blood findings. FNA provides definitive diagnosis and is an important tool for diagnosi…

INTRODUCTION: Chyluria is characterized by the passage of milky urine resulting from abnormal lymphatic drainage into the urinary tract. In parasitic cases, it is commonly caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and has varying severities. Diagnosis relies on clinical, laboratory, and radiological assessments, with treatment options spanning dietary modifications to surgical interventions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old male presented with chyluria for one year. He received medical treatment for filariasis without response. sclerotherapy with 5 % povidone Iodine was done successfully.
CONCLUSION: S…

SXP-1, an immunodominant filarial protein identified from Wuchereria bancrofti from our centre and previously exploited for diagnosis of human lymphatic filariasis, has been shown to be well conserved across several filarial species. In the present study, we describe the identification of SXP protein from the cattle filarid Setaria digitata using antiserum raised against recombinant WbSXP-1, and were able to detect 34 and 66kDa proteins from the crude protein extracts of S. digitata. These reactive proteins were found to be sheath proteins localized to the hypodermal region of the parasite.

This study was designed to reexamine the efficacy of diethylcarbamazine for bancroftian filariasis with special reference to changes in serum parasite antigen levels and antifilarial antibody titers after treatment. Patients with asymptomatic microfilaremia were treated with 6 mg/kg diethylcarbamazine daily for 12 days. Microfilaria counts fell dramatically after treatment, as expected. IgG antibody titers to adult and microfilarial antigens of B. malayi were increased 1 month after treatment in most patients. Titers fell slowly to or below pretreatment levels, but remained positive during sub

Lymphatic filariasis is an infection caused by parasites that poses a significant health, social, and economic burden, affecting a vast population that exceeds 120 million individuals globally. The Etiology of the infection is attributed to three nematode parasites, namely Wuchereria bancrofti, B. timori, and Brugia malayi, as well as which are phylogenetically related. These parasites are transmitted to humans via mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles, Aedes genera, and Culex. As per the estimation provided by the WHO, the current number of individuals infected with filariasis stands at appro…

A review of clinical manifestations of bancroftian filariasis, based on the literature and in the authors' experience, suggests a general classification in to six groups: 1) Normal endemics; 2) Individuals bearing microfilaremia; 3) Acute manifestations; 4) Chronic manifestations; 5) Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia; 6) Controversial forms. An overview on diagnostic procedures and the immunologic relationship between host and parasite was made in each group. Final considerations about treatment was also considered.

Eosinophilia can be due to both infectious and non-infectious causes, many of which may be clinically indistinguishable. Filariasis, a tropical and subtropical infection, is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia timori (B. timori), and Brugia malayi. Filariasis is conventionally diagnosed by demonstration of microfilaria in the peripheral blood smear. The disease may be missed if one is not aware of the possibility. We report two cases in two individuals with eosinophilia due to filaria resulting in tropical pulmonary eosinophilia and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). They had complete symptomatic …

Lymphatic filariasis caused by the mosquitoborne, lymphatic-dwelling nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti and Brigia malayi is still a common tropical parasitic disease and 120 million people are affected in the world, of which two-third in Asia. W. bancrofti is responsible for 90% of this disease, while B. malayi for the remaining 10%. Next to psychiatric illness, this is the leading cause for permanent and long-term disability. Some recent studies have evidenced new aspects in the diagnosis, management and in planning effective strategies for its global prevention. The aim of this up to date is to…
