The principle of 'guided bone regeneration' was first described in 1988 on the basis of animal-experimental data. Six weeks after transmandibular defects had been created and protected by non-resorbable teflonmembranes, complete bone regeneration was found. INTRODUCTION: Although severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs), such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, are rare, they are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: The current knowledge regarding background, differential diagnoses, critical care and implications for inter-hospital emergency medical service (EMS) transport of these patients is discussed.
CONCLUSION: SCAR patients will substantially benefit from early interdisciplinary care and thorough consideration of complications during EMS transport and intensive care treatment.

Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) is soluble in either 2-propanol or water but becomes insoluble in certain alcohol-rich 2-propanol/water mixtures. We have exploited this unusual cononsolvency behavior in order to prepare new biocompatible sterically stabilized PMPC latexes via nonaqueous dispersion polymerization in 2-propanol/water mixtures. All polymerizations were conducted in the presence of monomethoxy-capped poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) as a reactive stabilizer, with some formulations including ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker.

INTRODUCTION: The ideal prosthetic material for ventral hernia repair has yet to be described. Each prosthetic material has unique advantages and disadvantages in terms of tissue ingrowth, adhesion formation, and shrinkage profiles. Polyester-based mesh has shown minimal shrinkage and excellent tissue ingrowth in animal models. However, the macroporous, braided nature of this material has raised several concerns regarding the incidence of infections, fistulas, and bowel obstructions. BACKGROUND: Traumatic intracranial pseudoaneurysms in children must be completely secured from the parent artery because of significant morbidity and mortality from the high risk of rebleeding. However, the trapping of the parent artery involves the risk of ischemia changes distal to the trapped artery and the perforator injury. Various implants are used to treat paralytic lagophthalmos. Implantation of weights in the upper eyelid (lid loading) to close the lid by gravity is a very established procedure. If correctly performed, the advantages of the procedure include the complete closure of the eyelid without limiting the visual field, a technically simple operation, easy reversibility, and possible combination with other surgical lid corrections. Thus, this method is suitable for both irreversible and reversible facial nerve paralysis. Gold and platinum have, in the meantime, become the established implant material.

OBJECTIVE: One current technique to reconstruct an ear for microtia involves the use of a high density polyethylene auricular implant; however, the implant can extrude if not covered in a temporoparietal fascia flap. BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have emerged as an important opportunistic pathogen isolated in hospital. Several species of CoNS have been implicated in human infections and disease especially in patients with poor health status.

Surgical stabilization of flail chest is a controversial operation, but recent data has shown that selected patients benefit from it. We describe a simple and practical method of operative stabilization of flail chest using a prosthetic mesh and methylmethacrylate anchored to the ribs and sternum. The methylmethacrylate-mesh complex is inexpensive, can be extracted electively as soon as full thoracic stability is achieved, and can be used to stabilize extended chest wall injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the treating effect of collage-heparin sulfate after the 10 mm rat sciatic nerve defect was bridged by it.
METHODS: A new kind of nervous tissue engineering scaffold was produced by freeze-drying technique from collagen-heparin sulfate. Thirty-two SD rats were randomly divided into A, B, C and D groups. Sciatic nerve defect in group A was bridged by collagen-heparin sulfate. In group B, sciatic nerve was bridged by auto-nerve transplantation. Group C was the blank control group. Animals in group D were normal. And 10 mm sciatic nerve defect was bridged in the experiment.
