In a retrospective study sex ratio and mortality were analysed in a captive colony of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Seven hundred and thirty-five infants in 294 litters (20 singletons, 119 twins, 140 triplets, 14 quadruplets) out of 57 breeding females were evaluated. A sudden increase in sow mortality was reported from a large outdoor pig-breeding unit in Kenya. The sows showed pyrexia and diamond shaped to confluent skin lesions ante-mortem. Gross pathological examination of the carcases was performed and organ samples (heart, liver, kidney, spleen, mandible lymph nodes) were sent for further diagnostic investigation. Based upon the clinical, gross- and microscopic-pathological signs, bacteriological findings and toxin testing, concurrent infection with Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and Clostridium novyi was diagnosed as the cause of the sow mortality.

Three cases of bovine, ovarian epidermoid cysts were diagnosed as unilateral benign lesions in three out of 1,971 cows at slaughter. A stratified, cornifying, and squamous epithelium without associated skin adnexal structures or tissues from other embryonic tissue layers lined the cysts. The cysts were small, usually multiple, and contained keratin debris. Macroscopically, they resembled abscesses. These are benign, congenital lesions that are a separate entity from dermoids and teratomas, and they appear to have a higher incidence in cattle with Bos indicus breeding.

We report a case of congenital fibropapillomatosis in the head and neck of a piglet from a swine breeding farm where sporadic cutaneous papillomas of the prepuce and scrotum had previously occurred in several boars. In order to know the distributional patterns of Basommatophoran snails in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), 85 "counties" in the area of S. José do Rio Preto were worked out during seven months (1982). Snails from 286 breeding places were collected and identified. Biomphalaria straminea, an intermediate host of S. mansoni, was found in four little ponds, in the neighbourhood of Altair and S. José do Rio Preto. It was concluded that schistosomiasis has little chance to spread out in the studied area.

A group of Angus X Holstein cattle were determined to have allergic rhinitis. Clinical signs included nasal discharge, tearing, sneezing, and nasal pruritus. The diagnosis was made on the basis of intradermal skin testing of affected and clinically normal cattle. The affected cattle had positive test results to various tree, grass, weed, and mold allergens. The clinical signs and seasonal occurrence were similar to those features for allergic rhinitis in man. Breeding data indicated an inherited mode of transmission, although only females were affected.

Increased mortality occurred among sows in a pig-breeding unit during a few months. It was concluded that gastric torsion was one of the causes of death. This disease is becoming increasingly important in large intensive units, also in the Netherlands. Little is so far known of the origin of this syndrome. The feeding system and the quality of the food (fine-grained feed, contamination by toxic agents) could be a factor in the pathogenesis. Closer investigation of this economic problem would appear to be advisable.

An indirect fluorescent antibody test, using feces-derived oocysts as antigen, was used to detect antibodies to Cryptosporidium spp. in bovine sera in Manitoba. Antibodies were detected in 29 of 50 (58%) sera collected from animals of various ages on farms where calves had laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis and in 76 of 186 (40.9%) sera collected at random from culled breeding stock. Serum antibody, presumably colostral in origin, did not appear to protect young calves from the infection. No geographic preference for the infection was demonstrated.

Eleven bulls were determined to be impotent due to vascular shunts from the corpus cavernosum penis to the extracorporeal circulation. Clinically, the bulls were unable to achieve erection when stimulated with an electroejaculator and in natural breeding trials. The vascular shunts were located by serial contrast radiography of the corpus cavernosum penis. Surgical correction of the shunts was attempted in 8 of the bulls by wedge resection of the tunica albuginea. In 4 bulls, the surgical correction was successful and the bulls were returned to service.

A mixed breed dog was treated for severe hemolytic anemia secondary to Babesia canis infection. Within 14 hours of hospitalization, the dog developed respiratory distress and hypoxemia. The patient improved with lung-protective mechanical ventilation and neuromuscular blockade. The dog survived to discharge and was reportedly healthy at three-month follow-up.

Babesia divergens of bovine origin was isolated, for the first time in Tunisia, from a cow of a local breed (Bos taurus) from a locality in the north-west of the country. Gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were used for the isolation of the parasite which was inoculated into a splenectomised Friesian calf that developed a babesiosis, thus confirming the presence of the parasite.
