The article at hand reviews the current state of research of Purging Disorder (PurD). First, we report study results of comparisons between patients with PurD and controls and patients suffering from other established eating disorders. Then we present prevalence data and results of empirical classification studies and follow-up studies. Based on this, we discuss whether PurD meets the requirements of a distinct diagnosis. Despite some opposing results and outstanding research the article concludes that PurD as a diagnostic category offers the possibility to reduce the large and heterogeneous g

People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently engage in behaviors that may result in negative consequences. These behaviors can include binge eating, using substances, fighting, yelling, self-injuring, verbal aggression, or impulsive shopping. These behaviors frequently occur in the context of negative emotion, and they may serve to reduce it. The emotional cascade model (Selby & Joiner, 2009) asserts that people engage in these behaviors because the resulting physical sensations short-circuit emotional cascades, intense cycles of rumination, and negative emotion that are extrem

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influence of peer context on the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women and men.
METHOD: Secondary analyses were conducted using survey data from a large community sample of women and men (N = 2,060).
RESULTS: The frequency of friend comments on weight and diet moderated the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology such that more frequent comments strengthened the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women. This effect was not significant in analyses of men. Instead, friend

Elevated rates of comorbidity between binge eating and alcohol use problems have been widely documented. Prior studies have examined specific personality traits associated with the co-occurrence of these problems. The current study explores comprehensive personality factors that are associated with the co-occurrence of binge eating and binge drinking among a diverse sample of 208 college undergraduates. Using the Five Factor Model of personality, the authors assessed both comprehensive personality factors and style of impulse control, a personality style defined by different combinations of ne

Adolescent girls with body dissatisfaction (N = 481, SD = 1.4) were randomized to a dissonance-based thin-ideal internalization reduction program, healthy weight control program, expressive writing control condition, or assessment-only control condition. Dissonance participants showed significantly greater decreases in thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, negative affect, eating disorder symptoms, and psychosocial impairment and lower risk for eating pathology onset through 2- to 3-year follow-up than did assessment-only controls. Dissonance participants showed greater decreases i

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and behavioral weight loss treatment (BWLT) for overweight patients with binge eating disorder (BED).
METHOD: Eighty obese patients meeting criteria of BED according to DSM-IV-TR were randomly assigned to either CBT or BWLT consisting of 16 weekly treatments and 6 monthly follow-up sessions. Binge eating, general psychopathology, and body mass index (BMI) were assessed before, during, and after treatment, and at 12-month follow-up.
RESULTS: At posttreatment results favored CBT as the more ef

The purpose of this study was to determine if a cannabinoid CB(1) receptor antagonist would selectively decrease consumption of highly palatable food in non-human primates. The CB(1) receptor antagonist SR141716 (rimonabant; 0.12-1.0 mg/kg, i.m.) and the stimulant anorectic drug d-amphetamine (0.12-1.0 mg/kg, i.m.) were administered to non-food deprived baboons for the purpose of measuring the effect of each drug on consumption of the normal diet, and a large single meal of a high-carbohydrate candy. Four male and four female baboons had access to food 24 h each day, but they had to complete a

BACKGROUND: A history of sexual abuse is associated with a range of psychosocial difficulties and health risk behaviors in the general population. Sexual abuse also appears to be a risk factor for the development of obesity. Little is known, however, about the prevalence and psychosocial correlates of sexual abuse among persons with extreme obesity who seek bariatric surgery.
METHODS: Questionnaire data were collected from 567 individuals with extreme obesity who presented for bariatric surgery. Those with and without a self-reported history of sexual abuse were compared on several psychosoci

A crucial problem in studies involving food cravings is the lack of a psychometrically sound measure for use among overweight and obese populations. The degree to which the Food Cravings Questionnaires-Trait (FCQ-T) and State (FCQ-S) evidenced acceptable psychometric properties among overweight and obese participants was assessed. In study 1, 109 participants completed the FCQ-T and FCQ-S. Item-total correlations, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and factor structures were examined. Results indicate good internal consistency and partially support the factor structures. In study 2

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has efficacy for binge eating disorder (BED) but not obesity. No controlled studies have tested whether adding obesity medication to CBT facilitates weight loss. We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled study of orlistat administered with guided self-help CBT (CBTgsh).
METHODS: Fifty obese BED patients were randomly assigned to 12-week treatments of either orlistat plus CBTgsh (120 mg three times a day [t.i.d.]) or placebo plus CBTgsh and were followed in double-blind fashion for 3 months after treatment.
RESULTS: Seventy-eight percent of p

BACKGROUND: High weight status (ie, body mass index ≥30 kg) is prevalent among people living with HIV, yet few studies have examined internalized weight bias (IWB) and its links to health outcomes in this population.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether momentary IWB was associated with contemporaneous and prospective risk for dysregulated affect and binge eating in the daily lives of adults of high weight status with HIV, and a reference group of adults of high weight status without HIV.
DESIGN: This study is a secondary analysis of data from a 2-week ecological momentary assessment study

OBJECTIVE: Evidence implicates negative affect in the occurrence of binge/purge behaviors, although the extent to which theoretically relevant individual difference variables may impact this association remains unclear. Negative urgency, the dispositional tendency to engage in rash action when experiencing negative affect, is a unique facet of impulsivity that may play a key role. Moreover, it was hypothesized that women with anorexia nervosa (AN) who are higher on measures of negative urgency, relative to those lower on negative urgency, would exhibit: 1) greater binge eating and purging freq

Art does not have any inherent curative property; it is used as a therapeutic medium. Three mediative elements, depending on their specificities, have a role to play in the intrapsychic and interpersonal transformation of the patient: the creation the art-therapist and the group of participants. This article looks at the different components of art-therapy used in the treatment of anorexia.

PURPOSE: Abuse in childhood predicts stress-related overeating and excess weight gain in young women. We investigated whether two stress-related overeating behaviors--binge eating and coping-motivated eating--explain childhood abuse associations with weight status in young women.
METHODS: Analyses included 4377 women participating in the Growing Up Today Study, a longitudinal cohort of youth enrolled at age 9 to 14 years. We used marginal structural models to estimate the effects of abuse before age 11 years on weight status at age 22 to 29 years with and without adjustment for binge eating a

The prevalence of eating disorders among adolescents continues to increase. The starvation process itself is often associated with severe alterations of central and peripheral metabolism, affecting overall health during this vulnerable period. This article aims to convey basic knowledge on these frequent and disabling disorders, and to review new developments in classification issues resulting from the transition to DSM-5. A detailed description is given of the symptomatology of each eating disorder that typically manifests during adolescence. New data on epidemiology, and expanding knowledge

A number of studies have provided data on young women for the Clinical Impairment Assessment (CIA, v. 3.0), a measure of psychosocial impairment in eating disorders. However, little data exists on eating disorder samples. The aim of the current study was to investigate psychometric properties of the CIA in a clinical sample, using confirmatory factor analysis based on the originally-proposed model. The CIA was administered alongside with the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) to 190 individuals referred to an eating disorder service. Psychometric properties of the CIA were acceptable, based on

Puberty is a critical risk period for binge eating and eating disorders characterized by binge eating. Previous research focused almost entirely on psychosocial risk factors during puberty to the relative exclusion of biological influences. The current study addressed this gap by examining the emergence of binge eating during puberty in a rat model. We predicted that there would be minimal differences in binge eating proneness during pre-early puberty, but significant differences would emerge during puberty. Two independent samples of female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 30 and n = 36) were followe

OBJECTIVE: To assess the factor structure of the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) in three different samples and to compare the goodness-of-fit of five models of EDE data.
METHOD: The EDE was administered to eating disordered (n = 158), treatment-seeking obese (n = 170) and non-eating disordered community-based (n = 329) participants. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to compare the validity of the original four-factor EDE model with that of three-, two-, and one-factor models.
RESULTS: None of the tested models provided a "good fit" to the data in any sample, with the exception of a br

BACKGROUND: The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) is a semi-structured interview used worldwide for diagnostic purposes and to assess the core psychopathology of an eating disorder. The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q) has been developed as a self-report questionnaire version of the full-length interview.
AIM: This study was conducted to establish norms among female university students in Norway and to test the reliability of the Norwegian version of the EDE-Q.
METHOD: The questionnaire was administered to 670 young adult women with a mean age (±standard deviation) of 24

OBJECTIVE: Lack of self-esteem may play an important role in the development of eating disorders (ED). This study investigated the differential impact of positive and negative feedback on implicit and explicit self-esteem in women with an ED (N=25) as compared to women without an ED (N=29).
METHOD: False feedback (positive or negative) was given on participant's performance on a specifically developed intellectual test. Before and after the performance, explicit and implicit self-esteem was measured.
RESULTS: On the explicit measure ED patients reacted congruently with the nature of the feed
