True Exfoliation: Rarity of Degeneration.

True exfoliation is the condition in which the anterior capsule layers are delaminated. This case report presents a woman in her 70s with cataract and age-related degenerative true exfoliation. Findings from anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT) demonstrated a lamellar separation of the anterior portion of the lens capsule typical of true exfoliation. Early recognition of the condition via preoperative and intraoperative ASOCT is vital for better surgical planning and delivery so as to avoid complications in capsulorhexis execution.

[A case of dislocation of the empty capsular bag into the anterior chamber].

A highly myopic patient complained of 2 months of visual acuity loss and 4 months of ocular pain in the right eye after 16 years after bilateral cataract extraction. The slit lamp microscopy examination showed a residual lens capsule dislocation in the right anterior chamber of the eye, which was diagnosed as a residual lens capsule dislocation in the right eye. After diagnosis and timely treatment, the patient's postoperative vision and visual field recovered well.

Anterior choroidal artery territory infarction.

The anterior choroidal artery (AChA) originates from the posterior wall of the internal carotid distal to the posterior communicating artery and proximal to the intracerebral carotid bifurcation. This thin artery is rarely the cause of aneurysm and only accounts for 2-5% of all aneurysms. Even though the AChA territory shows large variations among individuals, it supplies crucial motor and sensory structures, such as the internal capsule, optic tract, the posterior limb of the internal capsule, the cerebral peduncle, and the choroid plexus.

Anterior dislocation of the shoulder and rotator cuff rupture.

Thirty-seven patients older than 40 years of age were seen after sustaining primary anterior dislocations of the shoulder. An associated rupture of the rotator cuff in each patient had been missed, often being mistaken for an axillary neuropathy. Eleven of these patients developed recurrent anterior instability that was due to rupture of the subscapularis and anterior capsule from the lesser tuberosity. In no patient was there a Bankart lesion. Repair of the capsule and subscapularis restored stability in all of the patients with recurrence.

Nevus cells within lymph nodes. Possible metastases from a benign intradermal nevus.

Two axillary lymph nodes from a patient who underwent modified radical mastectomy for carcinoma of the breast showed benign nevus cells in the fibrous capsule and within afferent lymphatics. Subsequently, an intradermal nevus from the area of drainage of the axillary lymph nodes was excised, which showed groups of nevus cells lying within small lymphatic channels. It is postulated that the nevus cells in the lymph node capsule could represent benign metastases from the intradermal nevus.

Hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus treated by bunionectomy and proximal metatarsal osteotomy.

Sixteen feet with hallux valgus and metatarsus primus varus have been treated by excision of the exostosis of the first metatarsal head, advancement of the medial capsule and the abductor hallucis, release of the lateral capsule and adductor tendon, and open-wedge osteotomy at the base of the first metatarsal inserting a bone graft. During a three-year period ther have been no nonunions of the osteotomy, and satisfactory maintenance of the corrections has occurred. This method is preferred over distal metatarsal osteotomy.

[Epidermoid cyst of the cranial vault. Neuroradiological and therapeutic considerations].

AIM: Intradiploic epidermoid cyst is a slow-growing tumor affecting only rarely the cranial bones. PATIENT: The authors describe a case of intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the cranial vault in which there was a predominantly intracranial extension. Roentgenographic and CT findings do not permit a differential diagnosis. Complete removal of the cyst and its capsule was accomplished, with complete recovery. CONCLUSION: Total removal oft the tumor and its capsule is associated with a very good long-term prognosis without recurrences.

Synthesis of aminoglucuronic acid glycans from the capsular polysaccharide of Staphylococcus aureus type 2.

The escalating antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus has made glycoconjugate vaccines targeting its surface polysaccharides a highly promising strategy for preventing staphylococcal infections. However, the development of a type 2-specific S. aureus vaccine has been hindered by the limited accessibility of its unique aminoglucuronic acid glycans. Efficient assembly of complex aminoglucuronic acid glycans with diverse amino modifications was achieved by employing the photolabile o-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl (oNBC) and hydrogenolysis-labile trichloroacetyl (TCA) groups as orthogonal amine-p

Dual Monitoring of Cracking and Healing in Self-healing Coatings Using Microcapsules Loaded with Two Fluorescent Dyes.

We report the development of an extrinsic, self-healing coating system that shows no fluorescence from intact coating, yellowish fluorescence in cracked regions, and greenish fluorescence in healed regions, thus allowing separate monitoring of cracking and healing of coatings. This fluorescence-monitoring self-healing system consisted of a top coating and an epoxy matrix resin containing mixed dye loaded in a single microcapsule. The dye-loaded microcapsules consisted of a poly(urea-formaldehyde) shell encapsulating a healing agent containing methacryloxypropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane …

Liquid crystal microcapsule medical device used for thermographic examination of the human female breast.

A new medical device called Thermascan has been developed based on heat-sensitive microencapsulated liquid crystals. This thermographic device assists in early detection of breast abnormalities that are characterized by minor changes in tissue temperature and displayed by the color changes in the device. This liquid crystal device is used to screen patients who fall into the average to high risk category: The value of this diagnostic device is that it will detect minute temperature changes that occur in the breast from very small heat-producing cancers.

Supramolecular confinement as a tool to control the dynamic molecular assembly of o-nitrosocumene in water.

The results presented here collectively illustrate that in addition to temperature and concentration, macrocyclic hosts cucurbiturils, cyclodextrins, and octa acid can be employed to manipulate the complex equilibria of ortho-nitrosocumene monomers (M), dimers (D), and their non-covalent aggregates (A) in water. The extent and location of free space and the micropolarity of the reaction cavity are important in controlling the dynamics of the guests confined in the octa acid capsule to fully tilt the M-D equilibrium towards M, even when two M are packed in a single capsule.

Fused Supernumerary Kidney Presenting as Total Urinary Incontinence.

Supernumerary kidney, a rare congenital anomaly, defined as an additional kidney with a separate capsule, collecting system and blood supply draining into the native ureter or a separate ureter. Small fused supernumerary units may be difficult to differentiate from renal moiety with complete separate ectopic ureter without complete evaluation. We report a case of a supernumerary kidney fused with the capsule of ipsilateral kidney with a separate complete ureter draining into the introitus of a young female thereby presenting as total incontinence of urine.

Arthroscopic Capsular Release of the Ankle Joint.

Adhesive capsulitis of the ankle is also known as frozen ankle and results in marked fibrosis and contracture of the ankle capsule. Arthroscopic capsular release is indicated for symptomatic frozen ankle that is resistant to conservative treatment. It is contraindicated for ankle stiffness due to degenerative joint disease, intra-articular malunion, or adhesion of the extensors of the ankle. The procedure consists of endoscopic posterior ankle capsulectomy and arthroscopic anterior ankle capsulotomy. It has the advantages of being minimally invasive surgery and allowing early postoperative vig

Renal leiomyosarcoma.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare malignant tumor of smooth muscle origin that generally stems from soft tissues and uterine tissue. Although, a small percentage of these may originate from the smooth muscle or vessel walls, most of which are of venous origin. Renal leiomyosarcomas may arise from the smooth muscle fibers of renal pelvis, renal capsule or renal vessels, last one is the most frequent. We report a case of renal LMS that could be originated in the renal capsule.

Rare cause of block to reduction after radial head dislocation in children.

This case report documents a rare cause of block to reduction in association with an anterior traumatic dislocation of the radial head in children. The radial head dislocations described were not reducible with a closed reduction secondary to "button holing" of the radial head through the anterior joint capsule. Open reduction was required to release the capsule and reduce the radial head. After reduction, the elbow was immobilized in flexion and the forearm in mild supination for 3 weeks. Postoperatively, all patients demonstrated full elbow function and range of function.

Traumatic cataract and Wieger's ligament.

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between posterior subcapsular contusion cataract and Wieger's ligament. Two clinical cases of traumatic cataract, occurring in young patients, were analyzed. In neither case was there evidence of penetrating or perforating injuries to the globe. During cataract extraction a smooth oval defect in the posterior capsule was observed; however, there was no evidence of intraoperative capsular damage. The outline of the defect was consistent with the border of Wieger's ligament. It appears that blunt trauma avulsed this region of lens cap

Histopathology of the temporal bone in osteogenesis imperfecta congenita: a report of 5 cases.

The histopathologic findings in 8 temporal bones from 5 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta congenita are reported. The otic capsule, bony walls of middle ear, and ossicles showed evidence of both deficient and abnormal ossification. Microfractures were found in the otic capsule and in the anterior process and handle of the malleus, in addition to their common location at the crura of the stapes. The cochlear and vestibular end-organs appeared normal. Pathologic changes compatible with otosclerosis were not seen. The possible implication of these changes on hearing and balance is discussed.
