Psychosocial aspects of Parkinson's disease.

Although Parkinson's disease has a definite neurologic basis, patients and relatives experience a multitude of stresses, only partly related to motor symptoms. Subjective and behavioral problems may be regarded as secondary disease symptoms. In an integrated approach, patients and relatives receive psychological counseling and learn new coping strategies for everyday situations. Results show that even elderly patients can make use of structured psychological interventions and change dysfunctional behaviors and cognitions. Measures specifically adjusted to Parkinson's disease are aimed at helpi

The Development of Size Sequencing Skills: An Empirical and Computational Analysis.

We explore a long-observed phenomenon in children's cognitive development known as size seriation. It is not until children are around 7 years of age that they spontaneously use a strict ascending or descending order of magnitude to organize sets of objects differing in size. Incomplete and inaccurate ordering shown by younger children has been thought to be related to their incomplete grasp of the mathematical concept of a unit. Piaget first brought attention to children's difficulties in solving ordering and size-matching tests, but his tasks and explanations have been progressively neglecte

AGI imagined: social AGI and the co-formation of human-AGI society.

The AI industry is advancing toward an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that will possess cognitive capabilities that are equal to or stronger than those of humans. While a purely computational AGI may be cognitively powerful, it will probably struggle to understand the human social environment. This gap needs both a theoretical and an applicative solution. This article provides the theoretical solution, specifying what such an AGI must contain and how it must be formed. We propose a theoretical construct of an AGI that will not only be computational but will also be capable to develop in

Construction of a personality trait prediction model based on color perception preference and personalized cognitive intervention pathways in art education.

Color perception preference encodes traceable signatures of personality, yet existing approaches to art education seldom translate this link into computationally grounded, individualized instruction. We develop an integrated framework that spans chromatic feature representation, deep-learning-based trait inference, and closed-loop pedagogical intervention. A multidimensional feature system was constructed across HSV and CIE L*a*b* color spaces, combining dominant color centroids, distribution entropy, perceptual contrast, harmony quantification, and an affective coordinate mapping. We propose

An adaptive AI-based virtual reality sports system for adolescents with excess body weight: a randomized controlled trial.

Adolescents with obesity face numerous health risks and encounter barriers that lead to physical inactivity. We developed a virtual reality sports system, named REVERIE (Real-World Exercise and VR-Based Exercise Research in Education), which used deep reinforcement learning to train transformer-based virtual coaching agents, offering immersive and effective sports guidance, with biomechanical performance comparable to real-world physical sports. We integrated REVERIE into a randomized controlled trial involving an 8-week intervention in adolescents with excess body weight (n = 227). Participan

DCA-Enhanced Alzheimer's detection with shearlet and deep learning integration.

Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system, causing the cells to stop working or die. The quality of life for individuals with AD steadily declines over time. While current treatments can relieve symptoms, a definitive cure remains elusive. However, technological advancements in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have opened up new possibilities for early AD detection. Early diagnosis is crucial, as trial drugs show promising results in patients who are diagnosed early. This study used a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) dataset f

A randomised controlled trial of a cognitive behaviourally informed intervention for changing violent sexual attitudes among adult sexual offenders in prison.

BACKGROUND: Predatory sexual acts by adults cause concern worldwide. Patterns of distorted thinking and weakened self-control are among the leading explanations. Amidst growing concerns about sexual offences in Nigeria, it might be that more psychologically informed interventions in prison could reduce the risks of further harm compared with the standard prison regime. AIMS: To test the effectiveness of a cognitive behaviourally informed intervention (CBII) in reducing violent sexual attitudes among men in prison in Nigeria for a sexual offence. METHODS: In a randomised controlled trial, men

Kidney-Metabolic Factors Associated with Cognitive Impairment in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: The associations of kidney-metabolic biomarkers with cognitive impairment (CI) beyond the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, in mL/min/1.73 m2) and albuminuria levels are not well understood. In exploratory analysis, our objective was to determine the extent that three kidney-metabolic factors, previously proposed as mechanisms of CI and commonly abnormal in chronic kidney disease (CKD), were associated with prevalent CI in CKD participants, adjusted for kidney function measures. METHODS: The study cohort included community-dwelling individuals aged ≥45 years with CKD (

Taurine Recovery of Learning Deficits Induced by Developmental Pb2+ Exposure.

Lead (Pb2+) is a historically well-documented environmental neurotoxin that produces developmental cognitive learning and memory impairments. These early neurodevelopmental impairments cause increased brain excitability via disruption of Ca2+ mediated signaling during critical periods of synaptogenesis inducing competition with Ica2+ through NMDARs resulting in altered brain development and functioning across the lifespan. Interestingly, Pb2+ has been shown to decrease GABA transport and uptake, decrease spontaneous and depolarization-evoked GABA neurotransmission and lower the expression of g

Stimulation of the cholinergic neurotransmissions enhances the efficacy of vestibular rehabilitation.

The primary aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of vestibular rehabilitation in a cohort of elderly labyrinthine-defective patients also affected by a moderate cognitive impairment of vascular origin. A secondary aim was to establish whether additional treatment with a cholinergic precursor (choline alphascerate) might enhance the results of the physical therapy in these patients. A retrospective clinical design was employed and data were collected from the vestibular rehabilitation treatment charts of 42 selected elderly patients who attended the tertiary referral centre of the

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on elderly with neurocognitive disorders.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic outburst, numerous studies have reported on the holistic approach of the disease, which has negative consequences on physical and mental health as well as short- and long-term effects on cognition, independently of age. The context of the pandemic brought significant demands on public health systems, leading to restrictive measures against coronavirus expansion (quarantines, physical distancing policies, etc.). Such measures are reported to increase perceived loneliness and helplessness and may exacerbate feelings of emotional distress.1 Elderly diagnosed with neuro

Brief Intervention for Discontinuing Inappropriate Z-Hypnotic Use Among Older Patients in Primary Care: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial With a Single Crossover.

BACKGROUND: Older patients are frequent users of Z-hypnotics despite consensus recommendations against extended use. Inappropriate Z-hypnotic use among older patients is frequently reported, posing risks of side effects and dependence. Interventions have been mainly at the population level and through prescription regulations. There are few instruments helping general practitioners (GPs) deal with inappropriate use among individual patients. OBJECTIVE: Through a randomized controlled trial (RCT), we aim to test the effectiveness of a behavioral brief intervention (BI) method used by trained G

Diaphragmatic Breathing Interfaces to Promote Relaxation for Mitigating Insomnia: Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Brief behavioral treatment for insomnia is an effective short-term therapy focusing on stimulus control and sleep restriction to enhance sleep quality. As a crucial part of this therapy, diaphragmatic breathing is often recommended when patients fail to fall asleep within 30 minutes. With the rise of health apps and gamification, these tools are increasingly seen as effective ways to boost self-efficacy and user engagement; however, traditional games tend to increase attention, which can negatively impact sleep and contradicts the aim of sleep therapy. This study thus explored the

Falls risk factors: assessment and management to prevent falls and fractures.

Falls and fragility fractures are common, dangerous, and important public health challenges. They are best understood as geriatric syndromes with close relation to frailty and other aging-related health problems. They are associated with many risk factors, in all health domains - physical, psychological, social, and environmental. At a population level, the challenge is to improve the health and well-being of all older people to reduce the incidence of falls. At a clinical level, the challenge is to assess the individual risk factors and apply evidence-based individually tailored, multifactori
