UNLABELLED: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established effective treatment for medication-resistant depression with the rapid onset of action. However, its cellular mechanism of action has not been revealed. We have previously shown that chronic antidepressant drug treatments enhance dopamine D1-like receptor-dependent synaptic potentiation at the hippocampal mossy fiber (MF)-CA3 excitatory synapse. This study was aimed at determining the effects of FrPbAII (174 Da), a novel isolated component from Parawixia bistriata spider venom, in the CNS of Wistar rats. Considering that FrPbAII inhibits the high affinity GABAergic uptake in a dose-dependent manner, its anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects were analyzed in well-established animal models. Injection of FrPbAII in the rat hippocampus induced a marked anxiolytic effect, increasing the occupancy in the open arms of the elevated plus maze (EC(50)=0.09 microg/microl) and increasing the time spent in the lit area of the light-dark apparatus

We studied a new procedure of BOLD/fMRI acquisition in epilepsy. They use the benzodiazepine effect to achieve a more reliable baseline for statistical analysis. The method works only in the MR domain without EEG correlation. It compares the EPI images during interictal epileptic discharges and the images "inactivated" by benzodiazepine. The results in five out of eight patients show that this procedure in comparison with the EEG/fMRI method gives a net improvement of spatial definition of BOLD areas. These preliminary results seem to confirm the hypothesis that the better BOLD/fMRI procedure

In 2 young adult women who experienced acute heterocyclic antidepressant intoxication, we found a quite unusual electrocardiographic pattern characterized by abnormal ST-tract elevation in the right precordial leads associated with a marked QRS widening (right bundle branch block and left anterior fascicular block type). Because serum electrolyte imbalance and acute myocardial ischemic events were excluded, the mechanism by which antidepressant overdose may produce such elevation of the ST tract remains unclear.

Intermittent positive-pressure ventilation and muscle relaxants were first used in Cape Town in 1958 in an attempt to reduce the mortality from tetanus neonatorum, which was then over 90%. Problems of effective ventilation, of tracheostomy, and of infection in the neonate were gradually overcome so that between 1967 and 1972 the mortality in 186 cases was 21%. In a consecutive series of 97 cases the mortality was 10%.
