Post-TAVI Follow-Up with MDCT of the Valve Prosthesis: Technical Application, Regular Findings and Typical Local Post-Interventional Complications.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has evolved into an alternative procedure to surgical valve replacement for high-risk patients with aortic valve stenosis. Despite technical innovations, there is still a risk of complications during and after the intervention. After a TAVI procedure, ECG-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) plays an important role in the early diagnosis of local complications. In this article, we explain for the first time how the technical acquisition of MDCT in the region of the aortic root is performed as post-interventional control of th

Three-dimensional finite element model to predict patterns of pterygomaxillary dysjunction during Le Fort I osteotomy.

The aim of this study was to determine whether non-linear three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) can be applied to simulate pterygomaxillary dysjunction during Le Fort I osteotomy (LFI) not involving a curved osteotome (LFI-non-COSep), and to predict potential changes in the fracture pattern associated with extending the cutting line. Computed tomography (CT) image data (100 snapshots) after LFI were converted to 3D-CT images. 3D-FEA models were built using preoperative CT matrix data and used to simulate pterygomaxillary dysjunction. The pterygomaxillary dysjunction patterns predi

Relationship of stylohyoid chain and cervical internal carotid artery detected by 3D angiography.

OBJECTIVE: The calcification of the stylohyoid chain (SHC), elongated styloid process (SP), larger SP' angle and its shortened distance of cervical internal carotid artery (CICA) are risk factors for bony compression and the stylocarotid syndrome. METHODS: 3D-CTAs of 125 patients were analyzed in terms of the SP length, its angulations, type of the SHC and relationships of its proximity to the CICA. RESULTS: Elongated SP was observed frequently both in females (47%) and males (55%). The mean distance of the CICA to the SP was calculated as 8.2 ± 3.3 mm. This short distance between the CICA a

Three-dimensional evaluation of healing joint morphology after closed treatment of condylar fractures.

Closed treatment for condylar fractures has long been widely accepted. With closed treatment, the deviated bone fragments heal in their new positions, and this may subsequently cause a range of functional impairments. The association between healing morphology and post-treatment functional impairment is unclear. In this study, computed tomography images of 26 patients (35 sides) who had undergone closed treatment for condylar fractures were used to perform a comparative investigation of three-dimensional (3D) bone morphology before and after treatment. As a result, the morphology of the condyl

Regions of high wall stress can predict the future location of rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Predicting the wall stress in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) using computational modeling may be a useful adjunct to traditional clinical parameters that indicate the risk of rupture. Maximum diameter has been shown to have many limitations, and using current technology it is possible to provide a patient-specific computational risk assessment using routinely acquired medical images. We present a case of AAA rupture where the exact rupture point was clearly visible on the computed tomography (CT) images. A blind computational study based on CT scans acquired 4 months earlier predicted elevate

Computer-assisted system for diagnosing degenerative dementia using cerebral blood flow SPECT and 3D-SSP: a multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Due to increasing numbers of patients with dementia, more physicians who do not specialize in brain nuclear medicine are being asked to interpret SPECT images of cerebral blood flow. We conducted a multicenter study to determine whether a computer-assisted diagnostic system Z-score summation analysis method (ZSAM) using three-dimensional stereotactic surface projections (3D-SSP) can differentiate Alzheimer's disease (AD)/dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and non-AD/DLB in institutions using various types of gamma cameras. METHOD: We determined the normal thresholds of Z-sum (summed Z-s

Automatic segmentation and measurement of pleural effusions on CT.

Pleural effusion is an important biomarker for the diagnosis of many diseases. We develop an automated method to evaluate pleural effusion on CT scans, the measurement of which is prohibitively time consuming when performed manually. The method is based on parietal and visceral pleura extraction, active contour models, region growing, Bezier surface fitting, and deformable surface modeling. Twelve CT scans with three manual segmentations were used to validate the automatic segmentation method. The method was then applied on 91 additional scans for visual assessment. The segmentation method yie

Assessment of the morphological features of degenerative mitral valve disease using 64-slice multi detector computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe mitral regurgitation may be screened for coronary artery disease with the use of cardiac computed tomography before valve surgery. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that dual-source multidetector computed tomography (DSCT) could effectively predict the culprit mitral valve scallop identified during surgery among patients with degenerative mitral valve disease undergoing surgical mitral valve repair. METHODS: Twenty-six patients (7 women) with known severe mitral regurgitation underwent elective mitral valve repair from September 2006 through December 2009 at our ins

Technetium-99m-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime lung scintigraphy findings in patients with Behçet's disease.

AIM: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem disorder that is characterized by vasculitis, and consists of a triad of recurrent ulcers of the oral and genital mucosa with relapsing uveitis. The prevalence of pulmonary involvement varies in the range of 1-10% in various studies, and its complications are severe and life threatening. To objectively assess the degree of pulmonary vascular endothelial damage in BD, the lung uptake, and the clearance rate of technetium-99m-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (Tc-99m-HMPAO) were determined. METHODS: Twenty-three nonsmoking patients with BD (10 female, 1

[Postoperative findings in the spinal column].

Postoperative imaging after spinal surgery is usually performed to document the correct positioning of implants or to rule out complications if patients still suffer from pain after surgery. Depending on the question various imaging modalities can be used all of which have benefits and limitations. Conventional X-ray is used for the documentation of the correct positioning of spinal implants, stability (olisthesis) and during follow-up to rule out fractures or instability of the implants, whereas soft tissue changes cannot be completely assessed. Besides these indications, imaging is usually p

Flattening the abdominal aortic tree for effective visualization.

We developed a novel visualization method for providing an uncluttered view of the abdominal aorta and its branches. The method abstracts the complex geometry of vessels using a convex primitive, and uses a sweep line algorithm to find a suboptimal placement of the primitive. The method was evaluated using 10 CT angiography datasets and resulted in a clear visualization with all cluttering intersections removed. The method can be used to convey clinical findings, including lumen patency and lesion locations, in a single two-dimensional image.

Reducing bladder artifacts in clinical pelvic SPECT images.

UNLABELLED: SPECT imaging of the pelvis is hampered by the presence of bladder artifacts, which render up to 20% of the images unreadable. The artifacts are caused by the high level of activity in the bladder and by the change in activity level as the bladder fills during data acquisition. The changing activity, together with the inhomogeneous attenuation of the pelvis, leads to inconsistencies in the projections and consequently artifacts when the data are reconstructed with filtered backprojection (FBP). dSPECT is an iterative algorithm that permits the reconstruction of dynamic SPECT images

Visualizing blood flow patterns using streamlines, arrows, and particle paths.

A customized computer program (MRIView) is described for visualizing and quantifying complex blood flow patterns in major vessels, using nongated and cardiac-gated three-dimensional (3D) velocity data obtained with MR velocity-encoded phase pulse sequences. Streamlines, arrows, and particle paths (collectively referred to as "paths") can be computed interactively, using both forward and backward time integration of the velocity field. The program provides interactive cross-sectional and 3D perspective visualization of the paths, with quantification and statistical analysis of average speed, th
