Antioxidant Capacity Determination of Complex Samples and Individual Phenolics - Multilateral Approach.

Antioxidant (AO) capacity of various medicinal plants extracts and phenolic compounds was assessed by the most widely used spectrophotometric assays such as ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and scavenging of 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). In addition, two direct current (DC) polarographic assays, one based on a decrease of anodic current of [Hg(O2H)(OH)] - HydroxoPerhydroxoMercury(II) Complex (HPMC) formation in alkaline solution of H2O2, at the potential of mercury dissolution and another recently developed Mercury

Caregiver needs and stress in caring for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with FASD experience neurodevelopmental impairments and adverse outcomes, which can result in stress on the caregiver. However, there is little research on the needs of caregivers supporting individuals with FASD and whether they are associated with caregiver stress. METHOD: 125 caregivers of individuals with FASD completed a survey with questions adapted from the Family Caregiver Survey and the Perceived Stress Scale. RESULTS: Caregivers reported a range of needs and concerns, and high levels of stress. In many areas of caregiver well-being concerns tended to be highe

Ideomotor limb apraxia as a staging tool in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (ILIAD).

BACKGROUND: Ideomotor apraxia (IMA) is known to affect individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Combined with impaired cognitive function, IMA can support evidence of probable AD. However, apraxia is a condition that is difficult to diagnose. The Postural Knowledge Test (PKT), developed by Mozaz et al, was designed to easily identify limb apraxia in multiple sclerosis yet demonstrated potential utility for AD. ILIAD is a pilot study to investigate correlation between the PKT and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). METHODS: Participants with mild, moderate, and severe AD were administered

Determination of normal values for an isocapnic hyperpnea endurance test in healthy individuals.

Respiratory Muscle Endurance (RME) is an alternative way to assess respiratory muscle impairment but normal values are lacking to use this test in a clinical perspective. Our objective was then to determine reference values of RME in healthy subjects. We recruited 161 healthy subjects (25-80 years old) who were distributed within 5 groups with a 10-year range. We measured vital capacity (VC) and maximal respiratory pressure (MIP, MEP). The RME test consisted of isocapnic hyperpnea at increasing levels of ventilation until exhaustion to determine Tlim (expressed in minutes and as percentage of

The presence of respiratory disorders in individuals with low back pain: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Inspiratory muscles, such as the diaphragm, play a key role in both respiration and spinal control. Therefore, diaphragm dysfunctions are often related to low back pain (LBP). However, few is known on the association between the presence of LBP and the presence of respiratory disorders (RD). OBJECTIVES: To perform a systematic review on the relation between RD and LBP. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: Two reviewers searched on PubMed/MEDLINE for studies concerning LBP and RD, from 1950 up to January 2016. The search string consisted of the following key words: low back

Comparison of Quantitative and Qualitative Dermatoglyphic Characteristics of Opium Addicts with Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Recreational drugs have a significant impact on the lives of drug users, their close families andfriends, as well as their society. Social, psychological, biological, and genetic factors could make a personmore prone to using recreational drugs. Finger and A-B ridges (dermatoglyphics) are formed during the firstand second trimesters of fetal development, under the influence of environmental and genetic factors. Theaim of our study was to investigate and evaluate a possible link between dermatoglyphics and opium usage. METHODS: The pattern of dermatoglyphics - finger and A-B prints

Rehabilitation of Supinator Nerve to Posterior Interosseous Nerve Transfer in Individuals With Tetraplegia.

Despite being a routine part of the early surgical management of brachial plexus injury, nerve transfers have only recently been used as a reconstructive option for those with tetraplegia. Subsequently, there is limited published literature on the rehabilitation theories and techniques for optimizing outcomes in this population. This article seeks to address this void by presenting our centers' working model for rehabilitation after nerve transfers for individuals with tetraplegia. The model is illustrated with the example of the rehabilitation process after a supinator nerve to posterior inte

Carbamazepine versus phenobarbitone monotherapy for epilepsy: an individual participant data review.

BACKGROUND: This is an updated version of the original Cochrane Review, first published in Issue 1, 2003 and updated in 2015. This review is one in a series of Cochrane Reviews investigating pair-wise monotherapy comparisons.Epilepsy is a common neurological condition in which abnormal electrical discharges from the brain cause recurrent unprovoked seizures. It is believed that with effective drug treatment, up to 70% of individuals with active epilepsy have the potential to become seizure-free and go into long-term remission shortly after starting drug therapy with a single antiepileptic drug

Highly individual patterns of virus-immune IgG effector responses in humans.

IgG responses are fundamental to adaptive immunity and document immunological memory of previous pathogen encounter. While specific antigen recognition is mediated by the variable F(ab')2 domain of IgG, various effector functions become activated via the constant Fcγ part bridging IgG-opsonized targets to FcγR-expressing immune effector cells. Traditionally, neutralizing IgG is considered the most appropriate correlate of protective humoral immunity to viruses. However, evidence is increasing that antiviral IgG mediates protection to viruses via activation of FcγRs. Using a test system allowin

Inter-individual variability and genetic influences on cytokine responses to bacteria and fungi.

Little is known about the inter-individual variation of cytokine responses to different pathogens in healthy individuals. To systematically describe cytokine responses elicited by distinct pathogens and to determine the effect of genetic variation on cytokine production, we profiled cytokines produced by peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 197 individuals of European origin from the 200 Functional Genomics (200FG) cohort in the Human Functional Genomics Project (http://www.humanfunctionalgenomics.org), obtained over three different years. We compared bacteria- and fungi-induced cytokine pr

Underestimated Amoebic Appendicitis among HIV-1-Infected Individuals in Japan.

Entamoeba histolytica is not a common causative agent of acute appendicitis. However, amoebic appendicitis can sometimes be severe and life threatening, mainly due to a lack of awareness. Also, its frequency, clinical features, and pathogenesis remain unclear. The study subjects were HIV-1-infected individuals who presented with acute appendicitis and later underwent appendectomy at our hospital between 1996 and 2014. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded preserved appendix specimens were reexamined by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining and PCR to identify undiagnosed amoebic appendicitis. Appende

Locomotion and eye behaviour under controlled environment in individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

This study aimed to examine simple locomotion and eye behaviour of individuals with Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) and typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD) within a simulated real-world environment. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative condition characterised by parietal, occipital and occipito-temporal tissue loss and progressive impairment of higher-order visual function in contrast to relatively spared memory and language. Targeted types of locomotion were walking in a series of corridors, up or down stairs, and across an open room with or without the presence of an obstac
