The effects of contamination, through water or food, of a sublethal dose of the organophosphate methyl parathion were analyzed in tissues that are responsible for absorption (gills, intestine) and metabolism (liver), in the freshwater fish Corydoras paleatus. In gill respiratory lamellae, epithelial hyperplasia, edema, and detachment occurred, diminishing sooner after contamination by food than after contamination through water. In the intestine, lipoid vacuolization of enterocytes, apical cytoplasm, and an increase in goblet cell activity occurred mainly after ingestion of contaminated food.

Crusted scabies is mainly observed in children with immunosuppression or mental illness. Treatment is very difficult, and relapse is frequent after topical scabicidal therapy. We describe a case of crusted scabies, induced by long-term application of a topical corticosteroid, relapsing after topical treatment and dramatically improved by ivermectin. We suggest that ivermectin is a safe and effective alternative therapy for the treatment of severe Sarcoptes scabiei infestation in children unresponsive to conventional treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of zeta-cypermethrin pour-on to control cattle lice.
DESIGN: Five field trials in south-eastern Australia.
PROCEDURE: Zeta-cypermethrin pour-on, deltamethrin pour-on and pour-on vehicle were applied to groups of 10 cattle. Lice were counted before treatment and 14, 28, 42 and 56 days after treatment.

BACKGROUND: Acute poisoning by an organophosphorus insecticide is frequently observed in Morocco. We report a case of malathion poisoning complicated by an intermediate syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman was hospitalized 3 hours after ingestion of 50 g of malathion. Intubation and ventilatory assistance was required due to failing consciousness and bronchial plugging. On day 4, a neurological syndrome suggestive of the intermediary syndrome with diaphragmatic palsy made it necessary to continue ventilatory assistance to day 20.

The stability of 89 pesticides (17 organochlorine, 33 organophosphorus, 8 pyrethroid, 12 carbamate, and 19 other pesticides) in 6 kinds of organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, and acetone) was investigated using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). All of the investigated pesticides were stable in all of the tested organic solvents during storage for 6 hours at room temperature in the dark except captafol, captan, phosmet, chinomethionat, and dicofol. However, the decreases of captafol, captan, phosmet, and chinomethionat were observed in methanol.

A 30-year-old Thai woman with systemic lupus erythematosus developed crusting, erythematous scaling plaques on the scalp and neck. Histologic section showed numerous mites in the stratum corneum. The diagnosis was further confirmed by identification of Sarcoptes scabiei in scraping and potassium hydroxide preparations made from the cutaneous lesions. After applications of 25 per cent benzyl benzoate for one month, there was complete resolution of the parasitic infestation.
