Evaluation of lamb and calf responses to Rift Valley fever MP-12 vaccination.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important viral disease of animals and humans in Africa and the Middle East that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The disease is of concern to international agricultural and public health communities. The RVFV MP-12 strain has been the most safety tested attenuated vaccine strain; thus it is being considered as a potential vaccine for the US national veterinary stockpile. This study was designed to establish safety protocols for large animal research with virulent RVF viruses, establish a target host immune response baseline using RVF MP-12 strain, and independently

Vaccination of mice using the West Nile virus E-protein in a DNA prime-protein boost strategy stimulates cell-mediated immunity and protects mice against a lethal challenge.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is endemic in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the United States. There is currently no antiviral treatment or human vaccine available to treat or prevent WNV infection. DNA plasmid-based vaccines represent a new approach for controlling infectious diseases. In rodents, DNA vaccines have been shown to induce B cell and cytotoxic T cell responses and protect against a wide range of infections. In this study, we formulated a plasmid DNA vector expressing the ectodomain of the E-protein of WNV into nanoparticles by using linear polyethy

Level of awareness regarding some zoonotic diseases, among dog owners of ithaca, new york.

OBJECTIVES: Worldwide, dogs and cats are the two most common household companion animals. Because of this, they can be direct or indirect source of many human infections. Fortunately, most of these zoonotic infections can be clinically prevented by appropriate prophylactic interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Present kind of cross-sectional study, for the first time, was conducted in city of Ithaca, New York. People visiting local animal hospitals, dog parks, library and shoppers at Walmart supermarket were personally interviewed and a pre-tested questionnaire was got filled from every indiv

Dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) and its observed effects on body functions in vertebrates.

OBJECTIVE: To review research findings on the effects of DDT on body functions in vertebrates. METHODS: The research was based on retrieval and critical review of relevant articles and abstracts cited in international and regional journals. The literature search was done on MedLine from the year 1975 to 2010. The analyses of published data on various vertebrates (birds, fish, mice, human, among others) were considered. RESULTS: The effect of DDT on body functions is purely dependent on the degree of exposure. Whereas mild exposure (1-5mg/kg) may not have significant effects, very high concen

Recombinant Rift Valley fever vaccines induce protective levels of antibody in baboons and resistance to lethal challenge in mice.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease endemic in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula caused by the highly infectious Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) that can be lethal to humans and animals and results in major losses in the livestock industry. RVF is exotic to the United States; however, mosquito species native to this region can serve as biological vectors for the virus. Thus, accidental or malicious introduction of this virus could result in RVFV becoming endemic in North America. Such an event would likely lead to significant morbidity and mortality in humans, and devastating economic

Disruption of dopamine transport by DDT and its metabolites.

Epidemiological studies suggest a link between pesticide exposure and an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). Although studies have been unable to clearly identify specific pesticides that contribute to PD, a few human studies have reported higher levels of the organochlorine pesticides dieldrin and DDE (a metabolite of DDT) in post-mortem PD brains. Previously, we found that exposure of mice to dieldrin caused perturbations in the nigrostriatal dopamine system consistent with those seen in PD. Given the concern over the environmental persistence and reintroduction of DDT for

A role for Mansonia uniformis mosquitoes in the transmission of lymphatic filariasis in Uganda?

The possible role of Mansonia uniformis mosquitoes in the transmission of lymphatic filariasis was assessed in an endemic area of Uganda, by examining their diurnal biting cycle, host preference and ability to support the development of experimental and natural Wuchereria bancrofti infections. Anopheles gambiae s.l. served as controls. Human landing catches revealed that outdoor biting peaked early in the evening (19:00-20:00h), while indoor biting peaked around midnight (23:00-24:00h). By far the majority of indoor collected M. uniformis had derived their blood meals from humans. Both biting

Effectiveness of the Integrated Dengue Education and Learning (iDEAL) module in improving the knowledge, attitude, practice, environmental cleanliness index, and dengue index among schoolchildren: A randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease caused by four distinct, closely related dengue viruses (DENV). Global dengue incidence has markedly increased in the past decades. The World Health Organization reported that cases increased from 505,430 in 2000 to 5.2 million in 2019. Similarly, the total dengue cases in Malaysia increased from 7,103 in 2000 to a peak of 130,101 in 2019. Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) remain the most effective dengue prevention and control tools. Furthermore, school-based health education is key to enhancing knowledge and raising awareness of the seriou

Changes in contributions of different Anopheles vector species to malaria transmission in east and southern Africa from 2000 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission in Africa is facilitated by multiple species of Anopheles mosquitoes. These vectors have different behaviors and vectorial capacities and are affected differently by vector control interventions, such as insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying. This review aimed to assess changes in the contribution of different vector species to malaria transmission in east and southern Africa over 20 years of widespread insecticide-based vector control. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Global Health, and Web of Science online databases for articles published betwee

Metarhizium anisopliae infection reduces Trypanosoma congolense reproduction in Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and its ability to acquire or transmit the parasite.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse fly-borne trypanosomiasis remains a significant problem in Africa despite years of interventions and research. The need for new strategies to control and possibly eliminate trypanosomiasis cannot be over-emphasized. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) infect their hosts through the cuticle and proliferate within the body of the host causing death in about 3-14 days depending on the concentration. During the infection process, EPF can reduce blood feeding abilities in hematophagous arthropods such as mosquitoes, tsetse flies and ticks, which may subsequently impact the development a

Concentrations of DDT metabolites in different food items and public health risk in Africa regions: systematic review and metal analysis.

BACKGROUND: DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a synthetic organochlorine pesticide used in agriculture and mosquito control but later banned due to its harmful effects on humans. It persists in the environment, biomagnified through the food chain, and poses serious health risks, including reproductive defect, cancer, and nervous system disorders. DDT has a long half-life and potential of long-range transport and continuing to contaminate long after use and remains to pose a global environmental and health concern. Therefore, this review was designed to assess the concentration of DDT me…

Cocktail vaccine for the management of Hyalomma anatolicum and Rhipicephalus microplus.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, ticks rank second only to mosquitoes as vectors of deadly pathogens affecting humans and first in transmitting animal pathogens, presenting a significant challenge to human wellness and sustainability of livestock-based industries. Traditional tick control via chemical acaricides impacts on the environment and has led to the emergence of multi-acaricide-resistant tick populations. Use of immunoprophylactic, along with other components of integrated tick management, holds the potential to mitigate tick infestations in a sustainable manner. To control multi-species tick i

Disentangling the intersection of inequities with health and malaria exposure: key lessons from rural communities in Northern Borneo.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria poses a significant challenge to efforts to eliminate malaria from Malaysia. Macaque reservoirs, outdoors-biting mosquitoes, human activities, and agricultural work are key factors associated with the transmission of this zoonotic pathogen. However, gaps in knowledge regarding reasons that drive malaria persistence in rural Kudat, Sabah, Northern Borneo remain. This study was conducted to address this knowledge gap, to better understand the complexities of these entangled problems, and to initiate discussion regarding new coun

Rrp6 Regulates Heterochromatic Gene Silencing via ncRNA RUF6 Decay in Malaria Parasites.

The heterochromatin environment plays a central role in silencing genes associated with the malaria parasite's development, survival in the host, and transmission to the mosquito vector. However, the underlying mechanism regulating the dynamic chromatin structure is not understood yet. Here, we have uncovered that Plasmodium falciparum Rrp6, an orthologue of eukaryotic RNA exosome-associated RNase, controls the silencing of heterochromatic genes. PfRrp6 knockdown disrupted the singular expression of the GC-rich ncRNA RUF6 family, a known critical regulator of virulence gene expression, through
