Understanding these attitudes and their associated factors is essential to improving nursing education and preparing students for compassionate end-of-life care. This study examined attitudes toward caring for dying patients among final-year nursing stu

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo nurse-led follow-up clinic.

Patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) often require multiple appointments for treatment with Epley manoeuvres. Waiting times for medical follow up can be very long. To reduce waiting times and increase availability of ENT outpatients' appointments, a nurse-led dizziness clinic (NLDC) to follow up BPPV patients was established. Prospective audit of 99 consecutive patients attending the NLDC, at which patients are assessed and treated, was conducted. Non-responders are redirected for further medical review. 99 patients were seen in 200 appointments in the NLDC from July 2007

Treating against a stated refusal: The ethics of substitute decision-making when a patient cannot capably refuse.

Decision-making capacity in health care refers to a person's ability to understand information relevant to a decision, appreciate how the decision affects them, make a choice, and communicate that choice. Capacity is essential in ethics and professional nursing practice because it forms the basis of informed consent. Nurses encounter various medical conditions, such as dementia, that can contribute to changes in cognitive abilities and result in diminished capacity. However, having a cognitive condition such as dementia does not necessarily mean a person lacks the capacity to make a specific d

Examining the Fourth Wave of the Opioid Epidemic: What Nurses Need to Know?

The United States continues to experience an opioid epidemic, which has been described by three waves: prescription opioid use, heroin use, and use of synthetic fentanyl analogs. Currently, a new "fourth wave" has emerged, which includes the use of stimulants (methamphetamine and cocaine) and synthetic opioids. Combining stimulants with high-potency synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, is associated with an increased mortality. Recent changes in methamphetamine production have led to a surge in supply, purity, and potency, thereby exacerbating the crisis. Nurses must under
