Clinical features of seizures occurring in a neurofibromatosis clinic population were examined in a retrospective study. Twenty-two individuals in a population of 359 persons with neurofibromatos 1 (NF1) had had one or more seizures. Age at first seizure ranged from 4 days to > 20 years. Suspensions of skin tissue material collected from lepromatous leprosy patients and material from mouse foot-pad harvests were inoculated into two media, viz., a biphasic medium and a minimal basal medium. The bacteriology of brain abscess is complex--both aerobic and anaerobic organisms are involved, and their incidence varies from centre to centre. In this study of 50 consecutive cases of brain abscess, the value of both modern imaging techniques and the time-honoured Gram's stain was demonstrated. The Gram's stain showed organisms in 41 cases (82%) and culture was positive in 44 cases (88%). Several features related to waterfowl carcasses were studied at Eyebrow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, during a botulism epizootic in the summer of 1989. Dummy carcasses, constructed by stretching duck skins over wooden forms, were used to assess the reaction of waterbirds to carcasses. It is now possible to observe with an accuracy of 1-2 microns the pattern of eruptive movements of a human premolar as it moves from gingival emergence to the occlusal plane. Amongst sacrococcygeal tumors, teratoma is seen often while other histologic types are rare. It is apparent that the less obvious intrapelvic tumors can cause obstructive symptoms and are usually diagnosed late. Twenty cases of sacrococcygeal tumor, including 14 teratomas (9 benign, 5 malignant) and 6 others (3 benign, 3 malignant) were treated at Tokyo Medical College and Shizuoka Children's Hospital over the last 23 years. Chromosomal fragile sites analyses were performed in peripheral lymphocytes of 37 patients with lymphoma and 16 patients with leukemia, and also of 50 healthy individuals as controls. Fourteen patients admitted to our clinic were found to have desquamative gingivitis. They were treated with doxycycline monohydrate, a semisynthetic tetracycline, for 6 to 8 weeks. We performed an in-depth interview to ascertain the psychosocial and functional status in 10 of 22 male-to-female transsexuals who underwent vaginoplasty from May 1985 to December 1988. Followup from 5 to 48 months was available for 14 patients. Our patients comprised a well educated, mostly employed, law abiding group with a low incidence of drug use. A right phrenic nerve palsy with severe respiratory and feeding difficulties throughout the patient's 2 1/2 years of survival was found at autopsy to relate to grossly complete atrophy of the muscle of the right diaphragm. An oblique fibrotic scar transected the right phrenic nerve at the level of the brachial plexus. There was marked reduction of the number of anterior motor neurons in the right central portion of cervical segments 2, 3, and 4. The lesion in the phrenic nerve is what would be expected following stretching during delivery.

Sixty-two cases of bacteriologically positive pulmonary tuberculosis were studied in the Department of Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases at the V.S.S. Medical College Hospital, Burla, India. Apart from other investigations, all patients underwent laparoscopy to determine the incidence of genital involvement. Positive findings were observed in 37 women; tubercles were present in the tubes of 15 women. At dilatation and curettage, the endometrium was obtained in 37 women. Tuberculous endometritis was detected in 4 women.

This report describes the case of a 69-year-old man with adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon who developed heterotopic ossification in a metastatic axillary lymph node. Among 38 cases of hypoparathyroidism, 32 patients were found to have hypocalcemic cataract. The morphology and mechanism of cataract formation were studied by clinical observation and biochemical calcium determinations, which indicated that the development of hypocalcemic cataract was related to the calcium level in blood but not to the duration of disease.
