Interaction between homozygous beta (0) thalassaemia and the Swiss type of hereditary persistence of fetal haemoglobin.

The interaction between beta(0) thalassemia and an heterocellular form of hereditary persistence of fetal haemoglobin (HPFH), presumably of the Swiss type, has been studied in three generations of a family in which both traits occur. The haematological parameters and the segregation of the two characters in the family suggest that the propositus, a 52-year-old male from southern Sardinia, is homozygous for beta(0) thalassemia and carrier of the HPFH. In spite of the complete suppression of adult haemoglobin synthesis, the patient is not anaemic and shows only morphological abnormalities of the

Heterogeneous impact of health insurance on children's nutritional status: insights from Instrumental Variable Quantile Regression (IV-QR) approach.

OBJECTIVE: Empirically, this study focuses on the impact assessment of health insurance uptake on the nutrition of kids under five with special attention to variation in wealth level in Pakistan. Theoretical frameworks argue that health insurance provides a safety net against poor health outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed 4,499 children from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (2017-18) using Instrumental Variable Quantile Regression (IV-QR) along with logistic and probit models as bassline, with internet access and distance to health facility as instruments. This approach addresses endoge

Structural Equation Modelling of Socioeconomic Status on Malnutrition Among Urban Preschoolers: Multi-Group Analysis of Hungary and Indonesia.

Background: Child malnutrition is a major public health problem worldwide, but the pathways through which socioeconomic status (SES) affects nutritional outcomes differ markedly between economic and welfare regimes. Differentiating whether these impacts are direct or through behavioural and structural factors is key to focused policy intervention. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of socioeconomic inequalities, maternal knowledge and feeding practices, and food insecurity on preschool undernutrition in Hungary and Indonesia. Methods: The study employs a cross-national comp

COVID-19-related disruptions and measles vaccination uptake among children attending urban health centers in Guelmim, Morocco: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine immunization services and may have widened measles immunity gaps. Morocco has experienced a widespread measles outbreak since late 2023. This study assessed the association between COVID-19-related disruptions and measles vaccination uptake among children in Guelmim, Morocco, and described additional informational and access barriers. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2025 in three urban public health centers in Guelmim. Using an interviewer-administered questionnaire, data were collected from 350 m

Evaluation of India's Supplementary Nutrition Programme for children aged 36-72 months and opportunities for improvement using linear programming.

India's Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP), under the Integrated Child Development Services, provides a Morning Snack and a Hot Cooked Meal to children aged 36-72 months through Anganwadis (day-care centres). This study assessed these meals against SNP standards (2012) and age-specific ICMR recommendations, when standards were unavailable, and explored the use of linear programming (LP) to improve nutrient quality of SNP meals. A cross-sectional survey documented the SNP-meals, ingredients, serving portions and other details, using questionnaires administered to Anganwadi workers and prog

Dental Management of a Child With Mitochondrial DNA Deletion Syndrome (Kearns-Sayre Syndrome): A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a rare mitochondrial DNA deletion disorder characterized by progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary retinopathy, and cardiac conduction abnormalities. Dental management may be complicated by developmental enamel defects, high caries burden, limited cooperation, and anesthetic considerations related to multisystem mitochondrial disease. Published dental case reports focused specifically on pediatric KSS remain extremely sparse. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the staged dental management of a 10-year-old girl with genetically confirmed KSS and

COVID-19 and chronic liver disease: results from the 1219 patients French registry.

The deleterious impact of Coronavirus SARS CoV-2 related Disease (COVID-19) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) has been previously described. We report here data from the largest French "real-life" cohort. Patients with CLD regardless of etiology and liver transplant recipients who developed COVID-19 confirmed by a positive PCR and/or an evocative chest CT scan were included. The primary outcome was 30-days mortality. Prognostic factors were analyzed using both uni- and multivariate models in subgroups of transplanted and non-transplanted patients. Between August, 2020, and December,

Linking family violence and children's trauma symptoms through attachment and emotional insecurity.

BACKGROUND: Attachment theory and emotional security theory offer distinct but compatible accounts to explain the consequences for children growing up in families with child abuse and neglect (CAN) and intimate partner violence (IPV). OBJECTIVE: We examined the unique contributions of attachment security and emotional insecurity in explaining associations between CAN and IPV, on the one hand, and children's post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), on the other. We examined to what extent attachment security and emotional insecurity mediate the relationship between CAN and IPV and PTSS. PARTICI

Diurnal Urinary Aldosterone Excretion and Potassium Intake During Pregnancy Are Associated With High Normal Blood Pressure in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Offspring blood pressure (OBP) may be programmed during pregnancy. Accordingly, maternal third-trimester 24-hour urine aldosterone levels are associated with fetoplacental trophic effects. Furthermore, high potassium and low sodium intakes are generally recommended in adults with normal renal function. We hypothesized that maternal 24-hour urine aldosterone levels were positively associated with OBP, and maternal intake of potassium and sodium may influence the association. The study aimed to investigate associations between maternal third-trimester 24-hour urine aldosterone, potas

Cirrhotic patients with bone and joint infections: A 10-year cohort study from a reference center.

INTRODUCTION: Bone and joint infections (BJI) require long-term and frequently high-dose antimicrobial treatment, often with heightened risk of drug-drug or drug-disease interactions. However, in some cases, notably regarding cirrhotic patients, these infections have yet to be adequately described. Cirrhosis is a major cause of end-stage chronic liver disease, entailing massive disorders in hepatic metabolism and a high rate of infections and comorbidities. We aimed to characterize the cirrhosis - BJI population treated over the last 10 years in our reference centre. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A d

Metabolomic data presents challenges for epidemiological meta-analysis: a case study of childhood body mass index from the ECHO consortium.

INTRODUCTION: Meta-analyses across diverse independent studies provide improved confidence in results. However, within the context of metabolomic epidemiology, meta-analysis investigations are complicated by differences in study design, data acquisition, and other factors that may impact reproducibility. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify maternal blood metabolites during pregnancy (> 24 gestational weeks) related to offspring body mass index (BMI) at age two years through a meta-analysis framework. METHODS: We used adjusted linear regression summary statistics from three

State paid family leave policies and infant maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Growing research points to economic policies as protective mechanisms for vulnerable families. Research on pediatric abusive head trauma suggests that paid family leave (PFL) may protect infants in the general population from physical abuse. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of state-level paid family leave policies with infant (ages 0-1) maltreatment rates. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A state-level panel dataset was constructed from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (2002-2019) data on infant maltreatment investigations among four states with PFL (California, Ne

Prenatal iron supplementation adjusted to maternal iron stores reduces behavioural problems in 4-year-old children.

Prenatal iron supplementation improves children's health and cognitive performance, but few studies explore behavioural development. This study assessed the effects of adjusting prenatal iron supplementation to maternal iron stores during early pregnancy on children's behavioural problems. Randomized controlled trial conducted in Tarragona (Spain) involving 230 nonanaemic pregnant women and their children after a 4-year follow-up. Based on haemoglobin (Hb) levels before gestational week (GW) 12, women receive different iron doses: those with Hb = 110-130 g/L were randomized to receive 80 or 40
