Giant orbital leiomyoma in a pediatric patient: diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

This manuscript describes an exceptional case of a long-standing orbital leiomyoma in a 14-year-old male. The tumor was unusually large, causing severe proptosis and significant involvement of the ocular muscles. The patient presented with amaurosis, complete ophthalmoplegia, spontaneous eye pain, and the inability to close the eyelids, leading to psychological distress. Due to the tumor's size and progression, a right orbital exenteration was performed to remove all orbital contents, including the tumor and the eyeball. The surgical procedure aimed to prevent tumor recurrence and improve the …

Primary orbital apocrine adenocarcinoma: case report and literature review.

Primary apocrine adenocarcinoma (PAA) originating from the orbit is a rare malignant neoplasm. We present the case of a 61-year-old-male with PAA of the orbit. The patient underwent a right orbital exenteration, neck dissection, and adjuvant radiotherapy. Orbital exenteration is commonly performed as the primary intervention for PAA of the orbit. The role of adjuvant radiotherapy to prevent local recurrence is unclear and may be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Orbital aspergillosis in an immunocompromised man with no history of trauma: a case report.

Fungal orbital cellulitis is usually seen in immunocompromised individuals, and opportunistic pathogens are the main etiology. We herein report a case of fungal orbital cellulitis due to Aspergillus in a patient with no history of trauma. A 48-year-old man presented to the emergency room of our hospital with a 2-week history of periorbital swelling, conjunctival hyperemia, and chemosis of his right eye. The visual acuity of his right eye was 6/20, and the intraocular pressure was 44 mmHg. The main clinical findings were proptosis of the right ocular globe with conjunctival hyperemia and a palp…

Primary Orbital Conjunctival Cyst Associated With the Inferior Rectus Muscle.

Primary simple conjunctival cysts are congenital, non-neoplastic, fluid-filled lesions lined by non-keratinizing squamous epithelium without dermal appendages. They are usually located in the anterior superonasal or superotemporal orbit and are typically managed with complete surgical excision. A 69-year-old woman presented with a 10-month history of diplopia and a 2-week history of right lower eyelid swelling. There was no history of any ocular trauma or surgery. Slit-lamp examination of the right eye revealed a greyish subconjunctival cyst located inferiorly. A Hess chart showed a limitation…

Qualitative and Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Bacterial Orbital Cellulitis.

PURPOSE: To summarise the qualitative and quantitative parameters of bacterial orbital cellulitis (OC) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and explore their clinical correlations. METHODS: Multi-centre retrospective study with inclusion of patients of all ages with OC who underwent MRI. Patients with isolated pre-septal cellulitis, bilateral disease and poor-quality scans were excluded. An enlargement ratio for extraocular muscles (EOMs) was calculated by dividing maximal EOM measurements from the affected side by the contralateral side. RESULTS: Twenty MRI scans from twenty patients (Mean a…

Orbital and Premaxillary Emphysema as a Result of Nose-Blowing Following Blepharoplasty.

A 41-year-old man presented with sudden-onset swelling, redness, and pain in the right eye, 4 days after bilateral upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. The symptoms were preceded by a forceful nose-blowing episode. Upon examination, periorbital edema and subcutaneous crepitus were observed, along with limitations in upward gaze. Computed tomography revealed bilateral premaxillary and extraconal air accumulation. Since there was no optic nerve ischemia or orbital compartment syndrome, the patient was closely monitored. Spontaneous regression of the emphysema was observed during follow-ups. Or…

Lateral Rectus Muscle Entrapment in Complex Orbital Fracture in a Child.

A 6-year-old boy presented with a lateral rectus muscle entrapment in a complex orbital fracture sustained during bicycle riding. He was diagnosed with a skull-base fracture with pneumocephalus and zygomatic and inferior orbital wall fractures at another hospital. The zygomatic fracture and pneumocephalus were treated conservatively. Although a detailed ocular motility examination could not be performed due to pain and inability to open the eyelid, the inferior wall fracture was surgically repaired. Postoperatively, persistent extraocular movement limitation prompted a referral to the authors'…

Iatrogenic Erosion of Orbital Walls due to Expanding Hydrogel Explant.

Hydrogel scleral buckles are a hydrophilic explant that may lead to significant delayed complications. They can insidiously enlarge over decades and may mimic an orbital tumor or cyst. The authors report a case of an expansive hydrogel scleral explant in a previously eviscerated socket. A 58-year-old male presented with a 2-week history of severe pain in his left anophthalmic socket. And 31 years prior, he had sustained OS trauma and undergone a series of surgeries. Details of these procedures were unavailable; however, he had ultimately proceeded to globe evisceration. MRI revealed a large lo…
