The use of theoretical frameworks in nursing care during the immediate postpartum period: An integrative review.

BACKGROUND: The immediate postpartum period is marked by intense physiological and socio-emotional changes, requiring comprehensive and humanized care. In this context, nursing theories provide the necessary foundation to enhance the quality of care during this period. OBJECTIVE: To identify in the scientific literature how theoretical frameworks are used in nursing care during the immediate postpartum period. METHODS: An integrative review was conducted between September and November 2025. The literature search was performed in the CAPES Journal Portal, Medical Literature Analysis and Retri

Comparable memory retention following brief periods of wakeful rest and napping: A pilot study.

Wakeful rest and sleep are both known to support memory retention. However, it remains unclear whether the benefits of wakeful rest are comparable to those of an equivalent period of sleep. To address this question, this study examined whether wakeful rest and sleep produce comparable behavioral effects and electrophysiological activity patterns. Ninety participants completed an incidental picture-encoding task and were then assigned to one of three 20-min delay conditions: wakeful rest, gameplay, or napping. After the delay, all participants completed an old/new recognition test that included

Multiple Sclerosis During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period: Diagnostic and Multidisciplinary Challenges in Two Cases.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy may complicate the recognition and evaluation of new neurological symptoms suggestive of a central nervous system demyelinating disease. Diagnostic uncertainty may arise when clinical progression, neuroimaging findings, and supportive investigations are incomplete or inconclusive. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two pregnant women with progressive focal neurological symptoms and radiological findings suggestive of a demyelinating disease. Case 1 involved a 27-year-old woman with a history of autoimmune spondyloarthritis who developed dizziness, gait instability, asymmetric

Blanking Period after Atrial Fibrillation Catheter Ablation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Atrial arrhythmias that recur within the first 3 months after atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation are conventionally attributed to a "blanking period" and not classified as procedural failure. Accumulating evidence suggests that such early recurrences of atrial tachyarrhythmias (ERAT) may instead predict late recurrence, raising concern that the conventional 3-month window overestimates the duration during which recurrences are benign. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between ERAT during each of the first 3 months after AF catheter ablation and late recurrence of atrial

Gestational gigantomastia in the early postpartum period presenting with severe refractory pain: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational gigantomastia (GG) is a rare, benign breast disorder characterized by rapid, excessive, and disproportionate breast enlargement during pregnancy. Affected patients may develop severe breast pain, skin breakdown, secondary infection, and musculoskeletal complications, resulting in significant functional impairment and psychosocial distress. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 24-year-old woman (G2P1A1) who presented on the second postpartum day with a 5-month history of rapidly progressive bilateral breast enlargement and severe, disabling breast pain of 2 days

Strategy for hybrid connection of porous strut and triply periodic minimal surface lattice structures.

Hybrid design approaches are essential for developing porous lattice structures with integrated multifunctional performance. While previous studies have focused on hybridization among different topologies, combining distinct structure types-such as integrating the high mechanical strength of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) sheet structures with the meta-structural characteristics of strut-based architectures-remains underexplored due to challenges in creating effective connections between these disparate forms. Here, we introduce a design strategy for hybridizing TPMS sheet and strut la

Gene flow drives periods of both evolutionary stasis and change in a wild bird population.

The struggle to explain the absence of evolutionary change in heritable, fitness-related traits of free-living populations has become emblematic of our ignorance of the evolutionary process in the wild. Yet while this 'paradox of stasis' has been the subject of much discussion, it is primarily identified a posteriori and rarely subject to direct quantification. We examined the evolution of clutch size in neighbouring populations of great tits (Parus major) before, during and after an experimental evolutionary perturbation. Interannual genetic changes in clutch size were directionally consisten

Social Capital in the Newborn Period and Household Food Insecurity at Child Age Two Years.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional analyses have demonstrated an association between lower social capital and higher food insecurity in families with children. This study examined the association between social capital in the newborn period and household food insecurity at child age 2 years in a diverse US sample. METHODS: This secondary analysis used survey data from 596 child-caregiver dyads enrolled at 6 US academic sites in Greenlight Plus, a childhood obesity prevention trial. Proportional odds regression models analyzed associations between 2 newborn-period social capital measures, caregiver so

The Effects of Different Grafting Periods, Method, and Environmental Factors on the Grafting Propagation of Carpinus betulus.

Carpinus betulus is an important ornamental landscape tree species with colorful foliage. It is widely used in landscaping due to its upright tree shape, significant seasonal changes, and good tolerance to pruning. Propagation methods for C. betulus include grafting, cutting, and seeding. However, the germination rate of seeding is low, and the rooting of cuttings is difficult; moreover, plant tissue culture techniques are complex, and the key technologies have not been disclosed. Grafting has therefore become the primary means of propagation. However, enabling the rapid reproduction of C. bet

Preconception Learned Helplessness as a Cognitive Vulnerability to Lower Maternal Bonding Across the Perinatal Period.

Background: Maternal bonding is a key determinant of maternal and infant well-being, yet little is known about preconception factors that shape its development. Learned helplessness (LH), a stable cognitive vulnerability characterized by perceived uncontrollability and diminished efficacy, may predispose women to poorer maternal bonding. This study examined whether preconception LH predicts antenatal and postpartum bonding and whether this association is mediated by antenatal bonding and prenatal affective symptoms. Methods: A sample of 151 euthymic, nulliparous women was followed prospectivel

Perioperative Management of Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndrome, Muckle-Wells Subtype: A Case Report.

Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) is a rare family of autoinflammatory disorders characterized by constitutive inflammasome activation that can be triggered by exposure to cold temperatures. We discuss the case of a 49-year-old woman with Muckle-Wells syndrome, a subtype of CAPS, presenting for cervical lymph node biopsy to rule out lymphoma. The pathophysiology of CAPS, intraoperative temperature monitoring, and other anesthesia considerations are reviewed in this article.

Latent profiles analysis of maternal perinatal stress and their association with NR3C1 expression in the perinatal period.

Maternal psychosocial stress during the perinatal period is highly prevalent and a major risk factor for maternal and child health. However, the operationalization of perinatal stress remains fragmented, and its biological embedding is poorly understood. This study aimed to (1) identify latent profiles of maternal perinatal stress and (2) examine their association with maternal NR3C1 expression, a molecular marker of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation reflecting glucocorticoid receptor availability and feedback sensitivity. A total of 241 mothers were recruited during pregnan

Analysis of Surgical Outcomes During a Period of Intravenous Fluid Restriction as a Result of a National Shortage.

BACKGROUND: Hurricane Helene severely damaged the Baxter Pharmaceutical Plant in North Cove, North Carolina, in the fall of 2024, resulting in a national shortage of IV fluids. Our institution implemented an IV fluid restriction (IVFR) protocol to conserve supply across many domains of the hospital, including the perioperative space. STUDY DESIGN: Gynecologic, plastic, urologic, and general surgery procedures performed during the IVFR period were reviewed in our local NSQIP and MBSAQIP datasets. These cases were matched to historical controls from the pre-IVFR period using random 1:1 propensi

A risk-need-responsivity (RNR)-informed systematic review of needs during the pretrial period.

OBJECTIVE: Pretrial risk assessments are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Despite the importance of assessing and intervening around "needs" in the risk-need-responsivity model, few pretrial risk assessments include comprehensive assessment of needs. We aim to provide a systematic review of the prevalence of and predictive utility of needs within the pretrial population. HYPOTHESES: There were no hypotheses given the nature of the study. METHOD: We conducted searches for articles in the EBSCO, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases using key words related to 11 needs domai

Periodic-boundary-aware normalized persistent homology for glass-forming liquids: A simulation methodology.

Persistent homology provides multiscale structural descriptors for disordered particle systems, but state-to-state comparisons require consistent treatment of characteristic length scales, periodic boundaries, and statistical uncertainty. We define a lift-consistent local H1 observable under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), normalize its longest finite persistence lifetime by the PBC mean nearest-neighbor distance, and compare states using the ratio RA/B of state-averaged dimensionless lifetimes. Confidence intervals for R are obtained by nonparametric bootstrap for independent configurati

Periodic limb movements in Parkinson's disease: a critical review of pathophysiology and a framework for clinical management.

Periodic limb movements (PLM) refer to periodic episodes of repetitive and stereotypical limb movements, predominantly affecting the lower extremities. The prevalence of PLM is estimated at 17.6% to 86.7% in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), which is much higher than 4% to 11% in the general population. PD is a chronic neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS), and PLM represents one of the common non-motor manifestations. PLM in PD has garnered increasing attention due to its high prevalence, association with reduced sleep quality, elev
