Drugs and personality: comparison of drug users, nonusers, and other clinical groups on the 16PF.

This article reviews published 16PF research on drug users. It also compares the 16PF scores of a new sample of nonusers with scores of matched groups of heavy, chronic users of cocaine, amphetamine, opiates, and barbiturates/sedative hypnotics, as well as combined groups of stimulant users, depressant users, and a combined group of users of all substances. No significant differences were found among drug user groups, but the profile of the nonuser group was distinctive. K-Means Cluster Analyses, as well as Cattell's Similarity and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficients, were used to

Basic character inventory personality traits among patients with major depression, anxiety disorders and mixed conditions.

Two hundred and seventy-two mainly nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients between 19 and 59 years of age were divided into various clinical groups according to DSM-III: pure major depression, major depression in combination with various anxiety disorders, pure anxiety disorders and a group with other mental disorders. The groups were compared as to differences in personality traits assessed by means of the Basic Character Inventory. The mixed major depression/non-panic anxiety disorder group appeared to be the most deviant with more oral-neurotic personality traits in addition to obsessive trait…

[Psychological characteristics of patients with ischemic heart disease and behavioral risk factor (type A personality)].

Psychological features were examined in 64 coronary heart disease (CHD) patients with type A behavioral risk factor. CHD was diagnosed after all the patients had undergone selective coronary angiography. To study personality traits, traditional psychological methods were used such as MMPI, the Spilberger questionnaire, Jenkins' questionnaire scores. According to the scores of MMPI (5MF, 8 Sc, Osi, F), type A behavior subjects were demonstrated to have lower ratings than type B behavior ones. No differences in anxiety shown by people were found. The findings suggest that Type A persons are incl…

National field trial of the DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for self-defeating personality disorder.

A national field trial of the criteria for self-defeating personality disorder was conducted in 1986. Among psychiatrists with a special interest in personality disorders there was a lack of consensus as to the need for the category in DSM-III-R. Although the diagnosis was more commonly made for female patients, the disorder was by no means rare in male patients. The diagnostic criteria for the disorder had high sensitivity and specificity. However, a series of analyses indicated that the category had limited descriptive validity and considerable overlap with borderline and dependent personali…

Prevalence of DSM-III-R self-defeating (masochistic) personality disorder in normal and outpatient populations.

The prevalence of DSM-III-R self defeating (masochistic) personality disorder was determined on an outpatient population (N = 82) and a normal population (N = 40) using the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ). Fifteen (18.3%) of the outpatients and two (5%) of normals were assessed as having the disorder. Overlap of greater than 50% with borderline, avoidant, and dependent personality disorders was found. Validation of masochistic personality disorder will require it to be of value in research and clinically in ways distinct from the other personality disorders with which it is associat…

Egocentrism and ego resiliency: personality characteristics associated with perspective-taking from early childhood to adolescence.

In this study we examined the longitudinal relation between ego resiliency and egocentrism. Measures of Level 1 and Level 2 egocentrism were administered to one hundred eleven 3 1/2-year-old children. Independent personality evaluations were available on these children at ages 3, 4, 7, 11, and 14 in the form of Q-sort ratings by independent sets of teachers and examiners. The relation between egocentrism and ego resiliency was observed to depend on level of egocentrism, as well as on sex of subject. In the sample of girls, both Level 1 and Level 2 egocentrism were negatively correlated with eg…

[Features of the development and clinical picture of hysterical neurosis and hysterical neurotic personality development].

The characteristics of the formation and structure of hysterical symptomatology in hysterical neurosis and hysterical neurotic development of personality are described. The author shows the pathomorphosis of modern hysterical neurotic disturbances and emphasizes a tendency toward imitation of common somatic diseases and the predominance in the clinical picture of neurosis of somato-vegetative and asthenic manifestations. Factors affecting the pathological process (characteristics of the premorbid adjustment and psychotraumatic situation) are analyzed. Hysterical neurosis was largely associated…

Social and other environmental influences on the cognitive and personality development of low birthweight infants.

Research on the cognitive development of low-birthweight infants was reviewed, followed by suggestions for promising future research strategies. On-going studies at the Rose F. Kennedy Center were described to illustrate the proposed model. Central features of the expanded approach are as follows: The study of high-risk populations should include, beyond biologic and broadly conceived social measures and beyond cognitive outcome, measures of development in the psychosocial domain. Further, detailed assessment of the children's daily life and behavior patterns can provide clues for causal linka

Personality characteristics and drinking patterns of high-risk drivers never apprehended for driving while intoxicated.

In a study of 124 high-risk drivers, almost 50% of the drives had a severe problem with alcohol and were driving without a valid license. The findings indicate that high-risk drivers, not identified as drinking drivers, are as potentially a threat to public health as those individuals arrested for driving while intoxicated. It is recommended that intervention programs for high-risk drivers cannot ignore alcohol education and, where appropriate, alcohol treatment as an identifiable programmatic strategy.

Personality traits in former depressed patients and in healthy subjects without past history of depression.

208 patients (81 male and 127 female) in the age range 21-67 years completed a Swedish personality inventory (Karolinska Sjukhusets Personlighetsinventorium; KSP) aimed at measuring stable personality traits after recovering from the depressive syndrome. Diagnostically, the series comprised 62 unipolars, 31 bipolars, 58 neurotic-reactive depressives, and 57 patients with an 'unspecified' depressive disorder, i.e., those patients who did not meet the criteria for inclusion in any of the aforementioned groups. As a contrast group, a series of 75 mentally healthy individuals (27 men and 48 women …

Biopsychobehavioral correlates of insomnia. II. Pattern specificity and consistency with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.

In a study designed to assess personality patterns of patients with chronic insomnia, a total of 528 subjects (428 insomniacs and 100 controls) completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Comparison of the MMPI profiles of insomniacs from a semirural area and of those from an urban area, each in a completely different geographic region, showed results consistent for high levels of psychopathology as well as for specific personality patterns within and between groups. The personality patterns of insomniac subjects were remarkably homogeneous: only a few MMPI code types acc…

Personality correlates and degree of impairment in male adolescents with progressive and nonprogressive physical disorders.

Investigated the personality profiles (MMPI) of 44 adolescents with progressive (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) and nonprogressive (mixed orthopedic) physical impairment to determine the relationship among personality correlates, disability type, functional level of impairment, and rapidity of decline in those with progressive disease. Both groups of males evidenced many similarities to severe physical limitations regardless of diagnosis or progression of their physical status. Common personality characteristics of increasing social inhibition, passiveness, and depression were identified as a re…

A preliminary study of the personality of the nightmare sufferer: relationship to schizophrenia and creativity?

Through psychiatric interviews and psychological tests the authors studied 38 adults who reported experiencing at least one nightmare per week. Nearly all of the subjects had a lifelong history of frequent nightmares. Four of the subjects met DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia, 9 met the criteria for borderline personality, and 6 met the criteria for schizotypal personality. The others had no specific diagnosis, and none of the subjects had a diagnosis of typical neurosis. Many had mentally ill relatives. Most had artistic interests and talents. These nightmare sufferers may be seen as unusual…
