Autism Spectrum symptoms in a population of extremely undernourished patients with Anorexia Nervosa: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are overrepresented among individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). We aimed to study the prevalence of ASD symptoms in extremely undernourished inpatients with AN and focus on potential cognitive and nutritional correlates. METHODS: We recruited prospectively all extremely undernourished patients with AN admitted to the Nutritional Care Unit of Paul Brousse Hospital over four months. ASD traits and AN psychopathology were assessed by administering the Autism Quotient (AQ) and the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2). Neuropsychological and

Biomarkers associated with antidepressant response and illness severity in major depressive disorder: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent condition characterized by alterations in different biological systems including inflammatory and antioxidant pathways. Antidepressants seem to rebalance biological abnormalities. In this short communication, we report differences in a set of biomarkers between drug-free patients and those who benefited from response to antidepressant monotherapy. METHODS: A sample of patients affected by MDD (N = 38) was recruited at the inpatient and outpatient clinic of Policlinico Hospital in Milan: 26 responders and 12 drug-free subjects. The two

On the Road or on the Web: A Pilot Study of a Mobile Clinic and Telehealth for Autism Assessment in Rural Communities.

Rural communities experience barriers that delay autism diagnosis and services, including few providers with autism expertise, unaffordability, geographic isolation, and limited parent/caregiver (hereinafter "caregiver") education. To address these barriers, the current pilot study assessed the feasibility of delivering autism assessment through a mobile clinic (n = 15) or via telehealth (n = 15) and tested the impact of autism psychoeducation on caregiver autism knowledge and empowerment. Participants included 30 children (aged 1-14 years) and their caregivers. Caregivers of children who rece

Dynamic Nature of Arachnoid Granulations During Acute Changes in Intracranial Pressure: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Arachnoid granulations (AGs) are cerebrospinal fluid drainage structures whose number and size may vary with intracranial pressure (ICP). Although changes in AG size following lumbar puncture have been reported, longitudinal changes in patients with and without acute ICP alterations have not been studied. This study evaluated AG number and volume over time in patients with and without acute ICP changes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed head and neck computed tomography angiography scans over a 10-year period. Subjects had two consecutive scans with visible AGs. Con

Quantifying 3D foot and ankle alignment using an AI-driven framework: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate assessment of foot and ankle alignment through clinical measurements is essential for diagnosing deformities, treatment planning, and monitoring outcomes. The traditional 2D radiographs fail to fully represent the 3D complexity of the foot and ankle. In contrast, weight-bearing CT provides a 3D view of bone alignment under physiological loading. Nevertheless, manual landmark identification on WBCT remains time-intensive and prone to variability. This study presents a novel AI framework automating foot and ankle alignment assessment via deep learning landmark detection. MAT

Analysis of the sheep (Ovis aries) vaginal microbiota preceding spontaneous abortion: a pilot study.

Little is known regarding the vaginal microbiota of sheep that undergo spontaneous abortions. The aim of this pilot study was to characterize, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and shotgun metagenomics, the vaginal microbiota throughout the gestation of two ewes (Ewe1 and Ewe2) that spontaneously aborted. To achieve this, weekly vaginal swabs were collected from the ewes prior to breeding until pregnancy testing; thereafter, biweekly swabs were collected until the spontaneous abortion occurred. Based on the 16S rRNA sequencing data, Ewe1's vaginal microbiota, overall, contained high abundances of
