Synchronous pneumothorax and venous thromboembolism after body contouring surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Lipoabdominoplasty is one of the most common abdominal body contouring procedures performed today; however, it carries the risk of significant complications. Pneumothorax is a rare complication of liposuction, while, venous thromboembolism has a low short-term mortality and long-term morbidity. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 57-year-old woman with a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, and severe COVID-19 three years earlier. The patient underwent 360-degree liposuction and abdominoplasty. In the immediate postoperative period, the patient developed a right pneumothorax

Current practices in reduction mammaplasty: A nationwide survey of French plastic surgeons in 2024.

BACKGROUND: Reduction mammaplasty is a common surgical procedure in France. Even if the French surgeons were pioneers in this surgery's development, we ignored French plastics surgeons' practices in this domain at this time. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of breast reduction practices among French plastic surgeons in 2024. METHOD: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional observational study conducted between March and June 2024. A 41-item online survey was distributed to French plastic surgeons, addressing surgeon demographics, indications, surgical techniques, and perioperati

Multiple-Staged Versus Single-Stage Surgical Excision for the Reconstruction of Congenital Melanocytic Nevi: A Meta-Analysis of Efficacy and Safety.

AIM: Systematic evidence comparing multiple-staged and single-stage excision strategies for the excision and reconstruction of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) remains limited. Because direct comparative evidence remains scarce, we pooled available studies to determine whether multiple-staged excision differs from single-stage excision in postoperative complications, recurrence, scar outcomes, and satisfaction after CMN reconstruction. METHODS: To retrieve comparative evidence on surgical strategies for CMN, a systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Lib

Free Innervated Gracilis Muscular Flap for Functional Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Following Desmoid Tumor Resection: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Desmoid tumors (DTs) are rare, benign, locally aggressive myofibroblastic neoplasms. Complete resection with negative margins remains the standard treatment despite their lack of metastatic potential. As DT commonly involve the anterior abdominal wall, their excision may result in complex defects requiring advanced reconstruction. We herein present the first functional single-stage reconstruction of an abdominal wall defect with the use of a free innervated gracilis muscle flap transfer. A 29-year-old woman, presented with a palpable tumor on the left-side of her abdominal wall. She underwent

[Technical note: Importance of primary reconstruction of orbicular muscle in modiolus defects: A clinical case report].

INTRODUCTION: The submental flap, first described by Martin and Baudet in 1990, was originally developed for the reconstruction of defects involving the lower two-thirds of the face. Owing to its reliable vascular pedicle and anatomical proximity, its indications have progressively expanded to include complex soft-tissue losses of the hemiface, particularly at the oral commissure, where both aesthetic and functional demands are high. METHODS: We report the case of a 70-year-old patient presenting with a right cheek and labial commissure defect following an animal bite, associated with loss of

Trisquel neoumbilicoplasty: three-flap spiral reconstruction in abdominal wall reconstruction patients.

PURPOSE: Neoumbilical reconstruction after complex abdominoplasty or abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) remains inadequately addressed by conventional techniques, which anchor cutaneous flaps to the anterior rectus fascia and require aggressive defatting to the deep fascia - principles incompatible with the presence of surgical mesh and with the compromised vascular territory of the post-abdominoplasty abdominal wall. We describe the Trisquel neoumbilicoplasty, a three-flap spiral technique designed to provide a reproducible and AWR-safe reconstructive option for high-risk patients in whom um

Limb Reconstruction in a Resource-Limited Environment.

Limb reconstruction in a resource-limited environment is a real challenge to health authorities, especially with the increasing number of patients. In the Middle East and low-income countries, the incidence of congenital deformities, complex trauma, war injuries, and posttraumatic complications is high. It is important to be guided by the best possible scientific evidence concerning the patient's opinion and available resources. Amputation is not accepted as a treatment option even in neglected complex cases. Therefore, new classifications were developed and current management methods were mod

Optimal Timing in Reconstruction for Traumatic Lower Extremity Injuries.

Open lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries that require soft tissue reconstruction carry significant risks of complications, including flap failure, infection, and nonunion. These complications predispose patients to worse physical, psychological, and economic outcomes and negatively impact quality of life. Teaching based on the work of Marko Godina suggests that flap reconstruction performed within 72 hours of injury reduces major complications. However, contemporary studies incorporating advances in negative pressure wound therapy suggest that flap reconstruction within 7 days may provide

Lower Extremity Reconstruction in Acute Burns.

This review focuses on the complex pathophysiology of the burn injury and its effects on lower extremity reconstruction in acute burns. Multiple aspects of burn care are discussed in conjunction with lower extremity reconstruction principles. Key discussion points include considerations for acute management such as full thickness burn injuries with exposure of critical structures, circumferential injuries, high voltage electrical injuries, the risk for compartment syndrome, strategies for meticulous wound care and infection prevention, adequate excision, early definitive or temporary coverage.

Lower Extremity Reconstruction: Comprehensive Considerations in Preoperative Planning and Technique Selection.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity defects are common, complex, and often debilitating injuries that significantly impair mobility and function. Trauma remains the most common indication for reconstruction, particularly in the setting of open fractures and extensive soft tissue loss. Nontraumatic causes such as infection, wound dehiscence, vascular insufficiency, malignancies, and diabetes also require similar reconstructive strategies. Despite their prevalence, management of these defects remains challenging for many surgeons. METHODS: This comprehensive review provides a current literature review

Tannic acid-reinforced anisotropic polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel for urethral stricture reconstruction.

Urethral stricture, a fibrotic condition causing lumen narrowing, lacks effective pharmacological treatments, with autologous grafts facing donor-site limitations. Tissue engineering strategies, particularly anisotropic hydrogels, offer promising alternatives but remain unexplored in urethral repair. Here, we developed a multifunctional anisotropic polyvinyl alcohol/tannic acid (APVA/TA) hydrogel via mechanical training and hydrogen-bond crosslinking for urethral reconstruction. The APVA/TA hydrogel exhibited enhanced crystallinity, mechanical strength, and anti-swelling properties, with TA co

Clavicular Distraction Osteoplasty With Sternoclavicular Reconstruction for a Medial Clavicle Fracture: A Case Report.

CASE: An 80-year-old man with osteoporosis sustained a complex, comminuted medial clavicle (MC) fracture that failed nonoperatively. A novel reconstruction involved MC resection, midclavicle distraction osteoplasty (DO) with iliac crest bone graft, and sternoclavicular (SC) joint reconstruction using a semitendinosus tendon allograft. By 1 year, the patient achieved successful healing and functional recovery. CONCLUSION: Patients with excessive MC bone loss may require a clavicular lengthening to approximate the MC to the manubrium. Restoring clavicular length through a DO in conjunction with

Optimizing care for patients with maxillomandibular Gorham-Stout disease.

OBJECTIVE: Gorham Stout disease (GSD) is an osteolysis caused by abnormal vessels, the etiology of which is not fully understood. Maxillary and/or mandibular destruction is found in nearly 20% of cases. We aimed to propose a management algorithm to ensure a successful surgical reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a systematic literature review of all maxillo-mandibular cases of GSD, with data on treatments and follow-up. We have added our two cases of patients with GSD to the published case series. We then performed a logistic regression analysis, using response to treatment as the depe

[Diagnostics and surgical treatment of peripheral nerve lesions].

Traumatic peripheral nerve lesions are defined as loss of nerve function due to the effects of external violence. They are relatively rare but can lead to severe sensorimotor deficits. Further impairments can occur due to soft tissue and bony injuries. Peripheral nerve lesions require a long clinical convalescence period and neurological deficits are often permanent. In recent years, the approach to treating peripheral traumatic nerve lesions has shifted towards early, active treatment upon detection of a structural lesion. This includes surgical reconstructive procedures aimed at restoring th

Bilateral Bronchus Suis Tracheoplasty.

Complex tracheal anomalies are life threatening without intervention and often require surgery in the neonatal period to establish a stable airway. Variations of slide tracheoplasty using all autologous tissue are the gold standard in tracheal reconstruction. We have encountered 9 patients whose complex tracheal anomalies required significant variations to slide tracheoplasty. Six of these patients presented with bronchus suis with extreme long segment tracheobronchial stenosis which were effectively repaired using a side-to-side bronchus suis tracheobronchoplasty. This technique has the advan
