A New Heartbeat-Respiration Coupling Metric for Relaxation/Stress Monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: Identification and continuous monitoring of relaxation/stress level through easily measurable physiological signals has become an urgent need. Relaxation/stress is mainly mediated by autonomic nervous system (ANS) which can hardly be noninvasively-measured, but can be reflected in heartbeat and respiration because the human body is a strongly coupling system. However, existing metrics based on heart rate and respiration present low accuracy for relaxation assessment. Our main objective is to propose a reliable metric for relaxation/stress monitoring. METHODS: By improving the quant

Enhancing Equanimity With Noninvasive Brain Stimulation: A Novel Framework for Mindfulness Interventions.

Mindfulness has gained widespread recognition for its benefits for mental health, cognitive performance, and well-being. However, the multifaceted nature of mindfulness, which encompasses elements such as attentional focus, emotional regulation, and present-moment awareness, complicates its definition and measurement. A key component that may underlie its broad benefits is equanimity-the ability to maintain an open and nonreactive attitude toward all sensory experiences. Empirical research suggests that mindfulness works through a combination of top-down attentional control and bottom-up senso

The Ethics of Cancer Screening Based on Race and Ethnicity.

Racial and ethnic disparities in incidence and mortality are well documented for many types of cancer. As a result, there is understandable policy and clinical interest in race- and ethnicity-based clinical screening guidelines to address cancer health disparities. Despite the theoretical benefits, such proposals do not typically address associated ethical considerations. Using the examples of gastric cancer and esophageal adenocarcinoma, which have demonstrated disparities according to race and ethnicity, this article examines relevant ethical arguments in considering screening based on race

Examining How National Levels of Life Expectancy, Education, and Income Influence Early Childhood Development: The Mediating Role of the Child's Nurturing Context.

OBJECTIVE: Forty-three percent of children younger than 5 years in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are at risk of not meeting their developmental potential. This study investigated how 3 aspects of national development (national life expectancy, education, and income levels) are associated with early childhood development by influencing 5 domains of nurturing care (caregiving, the learning environment, safety and security, nutrition, and the health of the home environment). METHODS: In total, 159,959 families with children aged 36 to 59 months living in 51 LMICs provided data. Nation

Supporting families through paediatric brain tumour: Unmet needs and suggestions for change.

OBJECTIVE: From diagnosis and beyond, a paediatric brain tumour and its treatment impact the child and their family in a myriad of ways. While it is considered best practice to offer ongoing psychosocial support for all family members, there is little scholarly investigation of both families' experiences and the practical implications of offering such care. We aimed to explore families' experiences of paediatric brain tumour and their associated psychosocial health service needs. METHODS: Families receiving care at the Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, for a child (0-18 y

Current trends and perspectives in the exploration of anorexia athletica-clinical challenges and therapeutic considerations.

Elite athletes are exposed to a considerable amount of physical and psychological stress throughout their entire professional life, but the exploration of the consequences of this stressful regimen on mental health is still in its early stages. Eating disorders (EDs), substance use disorders, and behavioral addictions represent only several domains that are worth more investigation in this vulnerable population, in order to find preventative and therapeutic strategies. The exploration of EDs in athletes is important because this population is very vulnerable to the impact that weight and body

"I don't go to funerals anymore": how people who use opioids grieve drug-related death in the US overdose epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-related overdose death is a public health epidemic in much of the USA, yet little is known about how people who use opioids (PWUO) experience overdose deaths in their social networks. We explore these experiences through a qualitative study of opioid-related overdose death bereavement among PWUO. METHODS: We recruited 30 adults who inject opioids from a syringe service program in the Midwestern USA and interviewed them using a semi-structured guide that addressed experiences of opioid use, opioid-related overdose, and overdose reversal via the medication naloxone. Repeated Sub-Concussive Impacts and the Negative Effects of Contact Sports on Cognition and Brain Integrity.

Sports are yielding a wealth of benefits for cardiovascular fitness, for psychological resilience, and for cognition. The amount of practice, and the type of practiced sports, are of importance to obtain these benefits and avoid any side effects. This is especially important in the context of contact sports. Contact sports are not only known to be a major source of injuries of the musculoskeletal apparatus, they are also significantly related to concussion and sub-concussion. Sub-concussive head impacts accumulate throughout the active sports career, and thus can cause measurable deficits and

Should Psychiatry Be Consulted When Facing a Self-Inflicted Foreign Body in the Urinary Tract?

Background On encountering a self-inflicted foreign body in the urinary tract, it is common that emergency physicians only consult the department of urology, and no further evaluations from other specialties are sought. Psychological conditions can also involve people with psychiatric disorders who perform self-harming or sexual practices. Many case reports of foreign bodies have been reported in the literature. However, there is little information regarding which specialties to consult in this situation within the emergency department (ED). Methodology This case series study gathered informat
