Inattention symptoms and the diagnosis of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder among youth with generalized anxiety disorder.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) commonly co-occur in childhood. Inattention symptoms can be hallmarks of both conditions, however assessment tools of inattention may not effectively distinguish between the two conditions. The present study used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses to examine the high-end specificity of the Attention Problems Scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for detecting comorbid ADHD among youth with GAD (N=46). Results support the utility of the Attention Problems Scale for accurately distinguishi

Internet-based CBT intervention for gamblers in Finland: experiences from the field.

From September 2007 to May 2011 a total of 471 participants (325 males and 146 females) signed up for an 8-week Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy offered for gamblers in Finland. Sixty-four percent of the participants were pathological gamblers (PGs) (NODS 5> points), 14% were problem gamblers (NODS 3-4 points) and 10% were at risk of gambling problems (NODS 1-2 points). Two hundred and twenty four participants completed the treatment and after the treatment period significant changes were found in the following variables: gambling related problems (NODS), gambling urge, impaired con

Psychosocial and developmental characteristics of female adolescents who have committed sexual offenses.

The present study aimed to examine differences in psychosocial and developmental characteristics between Adolescent Females who have committed Sexual Offenses (AFSOs; n = 40), Adolescent Females who have committed nonsexual Violent Offenses (AFVOs; n = 533), and Adolescent Males who have committed Sexual Offenses (AMSO, n = 743). Results showed that AFSOs and AMSOs were remarkably similar, whereas AFSOs and AFVOs were remarkably different on the measured variables. Compared to AFVOs, AFSOs less often had antisocial friends and problems in the domains of school (truancy, behavior problems, drop

Recent research on impulsivity in individuals with drug use and mental health disorders: implications for alcoholism.

Alcohol misuse and dependence, and many of its accompanying psychological problems, are associated with heightened levels of impulsivity that both accelerate the development of clinically significant illness and complicate clinical outcome. This article reviews recent developments in our understanding of impulsivity as they relate to brain circuitry that might underlie these comorbid factors, focusing upon the clinical features of substance use (and dependence), bipolar disorder, and pathological gambling. Individuals who are affected by these disorders exhibit problems in several domains of i

Head trauma in children, part 3: clinical and psychosocial outcome after head trauma in children.

With the aim of determining long-term outcome, the authors approached 38 families (average 2.1 years after trauma) with a questionnaire, following the acute-clinical treatment of head trauma of their children. Long-term damage was restricted almost exclusively to patients presenting with a Glasgow Coma Score < or =8. Paresis (16%), cranial nerve damage (13%), incontinence (5%), or coordinative disturbances (18%) continued. The older children stated that they influenced their life to a great extent (11%). Furthermore, many had mental and cognitive problems that occur quite frequently even in ch

Helping patients follow prescribed treatment: clinical applications.

Low adherence to prescribed medical regimens is a ubiquitous problem. Typical adherence rates are about 50% for medications and are much lower for lifestyle prescriptions and other more behaviorally demanding regimens. In addition, many patients with medical problems do not seek care or drop out of care prematurely. Although accurate measures of low adherence are lacking for many regimens, simple measures, such as directly asking patients and watching for appointment nonattendance and treatment nonresponse, will detect most problems. For short-term regimens (< or =2 weeks), adherence to medica

Psychosocial adaptation to amputation: the role of sociodemographic variables, disability-related factors and coping strategies.

This study examined the roles of sociodemographic variables, disability-related factors, and coping strategies as predictors of the psychosocial adaptation of 61 persons with amputations. Psychosocial adaptation was conceptualized as a multifaceted outcome criterion and was measured by seven scales from the Reactions to Impairment and Disability Inventory (RIDI) and the Acceptance of Disability (AD) scale. A series of multiple regression analyses indicated that both a set of sociodemographic variables and disability-related factors (age, duration of amputation, type of amputation) and a set of

The adolescent patient.

The physician must establish a confidential and trusting relationship with the adolescent patient. All states allow treatment of adolescents over 18 without parental consent and some allow treatment for special problems such as venereal disease or drug abuse before 18. The depressed adolescent often presents with behavioral problems, school failure, or medical symptoms. The medical history should include a description of the pregnancy and delivery, immunizations and childhood diseases, family history of coronary disease, sexual activity, school performance, and drug use. Macrocephaly, facial abnormalities, disproportionate tall stature, and mental retardation--a sib observation.

We report on two brothers with relatively short limbs, macrocephaly, high and narrow forehead, frontal upsweep of hairline, hypotelorism, broad but short ears, straight back, and mild hypermobility of all joints. Both were hypotonic neonatally and had developmental delay and behavior problems. Several of the manifestations were present in the father, too. A literature search failed to uncover any similar case.

Oedipism and Down's syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

Patients with Down's syndrome usually have mild and pleasant temperaments, rarely exhibiting temper tantrums or behavioral problems. Blindness occurs in 5% of these patients. When present, it is usually due to keratoconus and cataracts and their associated complications. In this paper the authors report a case of self-induced ocular blindness that apparently resulted from the patient's severe mental retardation. To their knowledge, this has not been described in Down's syndrome.

Neurologic sequelae of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Forty-two children who had Rocky Mountain spotted fever were seen for neurologic and psychologic examination at follow-up. The presence of sequelae was more common in children with severely impaired states of consciousness. Behavioral disturbances and learning disabilities were the most common problems. Seizures, although a common occurrence during acute disease, did not occur as sequelae to Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Impact of adverse postnatal environment on emotional regulation and neuroimmune function in adolescent rats prenatally exposed to alcohol.

Individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are at increased risk for experiencing early-life adversity (ELA), which may contribute to their heightened vulnerability to mental health problems. Using rat models, we examined the independent and interactive effects of PAE (liquid ethanol diet) and ELA (limited bedding) on emotional regulation, specifically anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, and assessed neuroimmune alterations in the amygdala and hypothalamus during early and late adolescence as a potential underlying mechanism. Our results indicate that PAE induced anxiety-like behavio

A universal hydro-mechanical coupled behavior model for clay-bearing strata-Molecular-level simulation approach.

Clay minerals in soils and rocks exhibit large volume change upon interaction with water and this behavior becomes even more complex when the strata are being stressed by the engineering and environmental loads. Therefore, a realistic prediction of the hydro-mechanical behavior of the clay-bearing strata is always a challenge due to their coupled swelling-mechanical response in the cases of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering problems, nuclear waste storage in clay-bearing rock repositories, shale gas extraction, and other uses of clay in the manufacturing industry. All the existing

Maternal Hyperglycemia in Pregnancy and Offspring Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal glycemic markers during pregnancy and offspring behaviors at 3 and 5 years. We hypothesized that exposure to maternal hyperglycemia would be associated with more behavioral problems in offspring. METHODS: We included 548 mother-child pairs from the prospective pre-birth Gen3G cohort (Canada). Glycemic markers were measured during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in the second trimester of pregnancy. Based on OGTT, we classified 59 women (10.8%) as having GDM according to intern

Informant (Dis)Agreement on Ratings of Challenging Behaviors and Social Communication in Preschool Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Purpose Cross-informant ratings are considered best practice for assessing children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, informant disagreement often occurs, which can pose significant challenges to various aspects of clinical services. This study explored the degree of parent and speech-language pathologist (SLP) agreement on ratings of challenging behaviors and social communication skills in preschool children with ASD. Method Fifty-eight informant ratings of challenging behaviors and social communication skills were collected from parents and SLPs on the same 29 preschool children

The behavioral pathway model to overweight and obesity: coping strategies, eating behaviors and body mass index.

PURPOSE: Obese and overweight people deal with more daily problems and stressful situations than normal-weight individuals, for example, discrimination and bias. The aims of the present study were twofold: to identify differences between overweight and normal-weight people in coping strategies and eating behaviors, and to examine the relationship between coping strategies, eating behaviors and BMI. METHODS: Sample of the present study consisted of 473 participants, 76.7% women (mean age = 32.7; SD = 11.4). Participants completed an ad hoc sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Coping Strate

Behavioral side-effects of levetiracetam in children with epilepsy: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Children with epilepsy are more likely to have behavioral problems compared to children without epilepsy. Literature suggests that levetiracetam leads to behavioral side-effects in children with epilepsy. The objective of this study is to provide a better overview of the frequency and variety of behavioral side-effects, which can be initiated by levetiracetam therapy in children with epilepsy. METHOD: Electronic databases used in the search were PubMed, Medline, Cochrane and Embase. Studies were eligible for inclusion when they included children from one month to 18 years of age with
