BACKGROUND: The impact and costs associated with work-related sprains and strains in New Zealand and globally are substantial and a major occupational and public health burden. In New Zealand around one-third of all sprains and strains workers compensation (ACC) claims (2019) are for back injuries, but shoulder and arm injuries are increasing at a faster rate than other sprain and strain injuries (ACC, 2020). A need exists for a change to current approaches to sprains and strains prevention, to more effectively manage this significant and persistent problem in workplaces. Designing out hazards

A review of the literature shows that 3% to 9% of all athletic injuries occur to the hand or wrist. Also, hand and wrist injuries are more common in pubescent and adolescent athletes than adults. Although knee and shoulder injuries are more common athletic injuries, an injury to the hand or wrist significantly can impair the athlete's ability to throw or catch a ball, or swing a bat or racquet. A college football player trains year round for just 11 or 12 hours of playing time. An athletic injury that occurs during the season can have profound consequences for the athlete's career and emotions…

CONTEXT: Rock climbing places significant mechanical demands on the fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. The repetitive use of isometric gripping, extreme joint positions, and dynamic movements contributes to increasing upper extremity overuse injuries as the sport rises in popularity. Many of these injuries stem from inadequate finger and forearm strength, leading to compensation with proximal musculature and secondary stabilizers. Hangboarding has become a well-established regimen for improving finger flexor strength, but its role in injury prevention remains poorly defined.

BACKGROUND: The last phases of a competitive game are when shoulder injuries most commonly happen, and fatigue is thought to be a major contributing factor, perhaps because of reduced proprioception and motor control. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of concentric fatigue on proprioception, motor control, and performance of the upper limb in handball players.
METHODS: Forty-six right-handed handball players (all males, age 26.1 ± 5.54 years) were included in this test-retest laboratory experiment. Proprioception was assessed using joint reposition sense (JRS), threshold…

BACKGROUND: In baseball, youth athletes play on smaller fields with shorter distances between bases, shorter pitching distances, and smaller mounds. Despite this, youth athletes use baseballs weighing the same amount as those used at the professional level, possibly predisposing youth baseball players to injuries.
PURPOSE: (1) To determine the effects of throwing a smaller, lighter, and both smaller and lighter baseball on throwing arm stress in youth athletes and (2) to also investigate how changing the ball size and weight would affect elbow varus torque, shoulder distraction force, and thr

BACKGROUND: Increased shoulder distraction force during a baseball pitch may make a pitcher susceptible to rotator cuff or glenohumeral labral injuries. A precursor to a pitching injury may be pain experienced in the throwing arm.
PURPOSE: To (1) compare peak shoulder distraction (PSD) forces in youth baseball pitchers with and without upper extremity pain when throwing a fastball and (2) assess if PSD forces across trials differ between pain and pain-free groups.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: A total of 38 male baseball pitchers aged 11 to 18 years were separated into

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHF) are common and painful injuries, with the majority resulting from falls from a standing height. As with other fragility fractures, its age-specific incidence is increasing. Surgical treatment with hemiarthroplasty (HA) and reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) have been increasingly used for displaced 3- and 4-part fractures despite a lack of good quality evidence as to whether one type of arthroplasty is superior to the other, and whether surgery is better than non-surgical management. BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) can result in lasting impairments of external rotation and cross-body adduction (CBA) that disrupt functional activities such as dressing, grooming, or throwing a ball. The purpose of this study was to compare the quantification of shoulder humerothoracic (HT) external rotation (ER), and glenohumeral (GH) CBA by 3 methods - physician visual estimate, goniometer measurement by an occupational therapist, and motion capture.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients with BPBI (average age of 9.9±3.2 y) participated in this study. Mallet scores and visual esti

BACKGROUND: The management of acute Rockwood type III acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation remains controversial, and the debate about whether patients should be conservatively or surgically treated continues. This study aims to compare conservative and surgical treatment of acute type III ACJ injuries in active sport participants (<35 years of age) by analysing clinical and radiological results after a minimum of 24 months follow-up.
METHODS: The records of 72 patients with acute type III ACJ dislocations who were treated from January 2006 to December 2011 were retrospectively evaluated

BACKGROUND: Primary hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder is used to treat complex proximal humeral fractures, although the reported functional results following this method of treatment have varied widely. The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the prosthetic survival and functional outcomes in a large series of patients treated with shoulder hemiarthroplasty for a proximal humeral fracture. By determining the factors that affected the outcome, we also aimed to produce models that could be used clinically to estimate the functional outcome at one year following surgery.

PURPOSE: Perilunate and lunate dislocations represent complex wrist injuries requiring urgent reduction and stabilization. While open reduction has been the gold standard, arthroscopic techniques have emerged as less invasive alternatives. However, comparative evidence remains limited, and the management strategies are controversial.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. Dedicated searches of major databases were performed up to June 16, 2025. Studies comparing open and

A significant clinical challenge in large-to-massive rotator cuff tendon injuries is the need for sustaining high mechanical demands despite limited tissue regeneration, which often results in clinical repair failure with high retear rates and long-term functional deficiencies. To address this, an innovative tendon substitute named "BioTenoForce" is engineered, which uses (i) tendon extracellular matrix (tECM)'s rich biocomplexity for tendon-specific regeneration and (ii) a mechanically robust, slow degradation polyurethane elastomer to mimic native tendon's physical attributes for sustaining

This study addresses occupational safety in reinforced concrete construction, an area marked by high accident rates and significant worker injury risks. By focusing on activity-body part (A-BP) combinations, this research introduces a novel framework for quantifying injury risks across construction activities. Reinforced concrete construction tasks are categorized into ten specific activities within three major work types: rebar work, formwork, and concrete placement. These are further analyzed concerning six critical body parts frequently injured on-site: head/face, arm/shoulder, wrist/hand,

Background: In patients with perilunate injuries (PLI) with multiple ligamentous and bony injuries involving the proximal carpal row, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) can be difficult and lead to poor functional outcomes. Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) is an alternative procedure that has been used for severely comminuted fractures. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long-term functional outcome (minimum 5 years) of patients that underwent an emergency PRC for PLI. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients who underwent PRC at our centre between 2001 and 2016. Only

Clavicle fractures combined with sternoclavicular joint dislocations are very rare injuries that need to be addressed quickly and treated effectively due to the altered biomechanics of the shoulder girdle as well as to the potential damages to the surrounding "noble" anatomical structures. A diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for such injuries has not yet been established. Computer Tomography with 3D reconstruction should be the diagnostic gold standard. In case of a highly displaced fracture and/or dislocation in an active patient, surgical treatment is advised in order to obtain proper bon
