Mn(III)-salophen complex with superoxide scavenging activity was prepared from manganese(III) acetate dihydrate and salophen in ethanol. Visible absorption spectrum of the red-brown complex exhibits a shoulder at 430 nm which was absent with either salophen or manganic acetate alone. The oxysterol content in normal and sickle red blood cell (RBC) membranes was assessed using thin-layer chromatography and capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Several more oxysterols were present in sickle RBCs compared to normal RBCs. The effect of repeated administration of rifabutin on the pharmacokinetics and metabolism of isoniazid was evaluated in 6 healthy volunteers. An exchange hydrogenation reaction on trioxsalen yields two isomeric dihydro analogues for which a combined HPLC-supercritical fluid chromatography method supplies purified materials. These reduced compounds and a related benzodipyranone are biologically active and inhibit the binding of epidermal growth factor on HeLa cells to an even greater extent than trioxsalen. This observation suggests a non-DNA target may play a role in the overall effects of psoralens on cells.

beta-Lactamases from Aeromonas hydrophila and A. sobria were purified and characterized. Both species produced beta-lactamases that were inducible by either cefoxitin or imipenem. These species were resistant to ampicillin and cephalothin but not imipenem. Isoelectric focusing of sonic extracts revealed one band at pI 8.0 and a second band at pI 7.0 for A. hydrophila. The degradation of phenylmercuric nitrate in the presence of sodium metabisulphite in eye drop formulations has been investigated using a stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method. HPLC methods have been developed for the quantitation of the principal degradation products (diphenyl-mercury, benzenesulphonic acid and benzenesulphinic acid) and a mechanism is proposed for their formation. The carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) complex from Methanosarcina thermophila catalyzed the synthesis of acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) from CH3I, CO, and coenzyme A (CoA) at a rate of 65 nmol/min/mg at 55 degrees C.
