We present an assessment of the dental and maxillofacial pathology in a medieval population in southwestern France. One hundred and ninety eight mandibles and 29 craniofacial complexes were analysed. Dental and periodontal infectious pathology predominated. Third molar agenesia was quite frequent, concerning 25% of the mandibles. Third molar eruption was almost constant and in a normal position. Condylar process degeneration concerned 6% of the population. Three cases of traumatic pathology were observed, one case of long mandible was noted, and two cases of hypertrophic inferior alveolar proc

The pyogenic granuloma frequently appears between the ages of eleven and forty years. It is a benign soft tissue lesion of inflammatory origin, which may be misdiagnosed as a neoplastic tumor due to its rapid development. Definitive diagnosis can only be made by histopathologic examination. Treatment is by conservative local excision. The present manuscript reports on the diagnosis and treatment of such a lesion, which caused significant maxillary bone loss in a twelve-year-old child.

The mucopolysaccharidosis represent a broad spectrum of disorders due to the deficiency of one of a group of enzymes which degrade three classes of mucopolysaccharides: heparan sulfate, dermatan-sulfate and keratan sulfate. The general phenotype includes coarse facies, corneal clouding, hepatosplenomegaly, joint stiffness, hernias, dysostosis multiplex, mucopolysaccharides excretion in the urine and metachromatic staining in peripheral leukocytes and bone marrow. Various components of the MPS phenotype are also found in the mucolipidoses, glycoprotein storage diseases. Detailed clinical and ra

There are a variety of oral/dental findings presented in the oral cavities of children that are of interest to the examining pediatrician. There are oral pathologic conditions and soft tissues anomalies. These include developmental anomalies and variations of the soft tissue, benign mucosal lesions, benign mesenchymal lesions, cysts and pseudocysts, odontogenic cysts and neoplasms of the jaws, benign nonodontogenic neoplasms of the jaws, and inflammatory lesions in bone. There are anomalies in the developing dentitions of children that a pediatrician needs to be aware of also. These include an

Elderly people form a very large portion (43.2%) of the out-patients of the research institute for dental psychosomatics and psychopathology. Abnormal personality developments could be observed in the group of 40-60-year-old patients as often as in the over-60 group, whereas there was a noticeable rise in the number of depressions and abnormal reactions in the older age group. As one case demonstrates, the situation and life-history of an elderly patient, too, are important factors influencing his psychosomatic disturbance, in some cases however, an organic psychosyndrome may supervene, thus f

Possible inclusion of contaminant bacteria during surgery has been problematic in studies of periradicular lesions of endodontic origin. Therefore, in this study, two different surgical techniques were compared. A second problem is that some difficult to cultivate species may not be detected using bacteriological methods. Molecular techniques may resolve this problem. DNA-DNA hybridization technology has the additional advantage that DNA is not amplified. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if bacteria from periradicular endodontic lesions could be identified using DNA-DNA hybri

This study reports on a retrospective survey of 1001 panoramic radiographs in a dental school population of persons with impacted third molars. The objective was to determine the association between pathologic conditions visible on radiographs and third molar teeth. In the series 2872 impacted third molars were examined. The most common problem seen radiolucencies. Other than caries, occurrence rates were low. Statistically significant differences in occurrences rates were seen within and between jaws for various pathologic conditions. The low rates did not offer support for the likely presenc

BACKGROUND: Although many complications from kidney disease therapy can be prevented or effectively treated, oral health problems are nevertheless a consequence.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of enamel defect and gingival enlargement in pediatric patients with kidney disease at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted between January and August 2013, at SrinagarindHospital, Khon Kaen University. Ninety-seven pediatric patients with kidney disease were allowed by their parents to

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients who have had sublingual displacement of a mandibular third molar root, to identify potential risk factors, and to provide the clinician with information on how to prevent and treat this complication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of a series of 6 patients who underwent third molar removal with accidental displacement of a root into the sublingual space. All patients were attended at the Department of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Barcelona (Spain) from 2000 through 2010.

Various materials have been used to prevent or minimize ridge collapse after tooth extraction in an attempt to improve implant placement. The bone graft material used for filling bone defects after tooth extraction is a controversial topic. This is especially so if there is an apical lesion at the site of the natural tooth. A patient who presented with a retained root and apical lesion was treated with bone grafting as a staged implant placement. Histological analysis of a biopsy done 6 months after grafting revealed good healing with mature bone. Histomorphometric evaluation showed 39.4% bony

AIM: Prophylactic surgical extraction of impacted third molars is a common practice throughout the world justified on the presumption that the risk of surgical morbidity increases with increasing age, among other reasons. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare surgical morbidity associated with third-molar extractions in young and aging populations.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A review of records for all patients who underwent the surgical extraction of impacted third molars between April 2001 and June 2006 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital was carried out.
RESULTS: A total of 5

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the probable factors associated with pulpectomy failure of primary teeth through qualitative analysis by histopathology (HIST) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
STUDY DESIGN: A longitudinal clinical investigation of the efficacy of pulpectomy in primary teeth with irreversible pulp changes was carried out with 133 teeth (66 children) evaluated up to 48 months. The overall success was 86.1% during follow-up. Of the 18 teeth extracted as a result of treatment failure, 8 presented sufficiently undamaged roots to be randomly selected fo
