Facial soft tissue augmentation has been performed using different materials. We describe a woman who received polyacrylamide gel injections for cosmetic reasons and developed a severe granulomatous inflammation paranasally. Because the patient did not mention the cosmetic intervention, the diagnosis of polyacrylamide gel-induced granuloma was complicated. The distinctive histopathological findings led to the correct diagnosis despite sparse clinical information. Catheter associated urinary tract infection accounts for a large proportion of all hospital-acquired infections, and there has been little change in the incidence of such infections since the introduction of closed sterile urinary drainage systems in the 1960s. PURPOSE: To investigate the imaging of corneal structures with optical coherence tomography (OCT) after implantation of intracorneal ring segments (ICRS).
METHODS: In an experimental study with six porcine eyes, qualitative and quantitative imaging with corneal OCT using a wavelength of 1310 nm after implantation of ICRS was performed. The optical results were compared with light microscopy of the histological sections.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was coated onto polyethylene (PE) films by a repetitive adsorption and drying process, and then the PVA-coated PE films were alternately immersed into aqueous solutions of Ca2+ and CO3(2-) ions (alternate soaking cycles), to deposit calcium carbonate (CaCO3) onto the films. The effective clinical use of biomaterials within the urinary tract is often hindered by the associated problems of bacterial biofilm formation and encrustation which may cause obstruction or blockage of urethral catheters and ureteral stents. Methods for assessing encrustation formation on these devices are reviewed and novel urinary tract biomaterials which may be more effective at resisting encrustation are discussed.

We report two cases of recurrent trigeminal neuralgia caused by an inserted prosthesis. Teflon material or polyurethane sponge inserted between the trigeminal nerve and the superior cerebellar artery became hardened and compressed the trigeminal nerve 17 months (Teflon) and 9 years (polyurethane sponge) respectively after the initial surgery. On the basis of these cases, it it suggested that actual decompression of the trigeminal nerve is important in surgery for trigeminal neuralgia, and that the prosthesis should not touch the trigeminal nerve.

Collagen membranes of increased absorption were prepared by incubation in the acidic solutions and lyophilization. The organic acids and hydrochloric acid solutions were used for this purpose. Deep burns of the hand are a common serious surgical problem with major occupational and economic implications. Control of haemorrhage during excision and grafting is difficult and postoperative haematoma may reduce graft take. Following excision, important deep structures such as extensor tendons or joints may be exposed. Such tissues do not take free skin grafts satisfactorily. We have found calcium alginate dressings can be of immense help in minimizing these technical problems. We describe our experience in one patient; three other patients have been treated with equal success.
