Feelings: what questions best discriminate women with and without eating disorders?

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD) with TAFRO syndrome (characterized by thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fever, reticulin fibrosis/renal failure, organomegaly) is a recently described disorder. The diagnostic criteria for iMCD-TAFRO exclude patients with concomitant autoimmune diseases such as primary Sjögren's syndrome. However, recent case reports suggest that although rare, these conditions may coexist. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with escalating systemic inflammation, cytopenias, anasarca, renal dysfunction and organomegaly, w

Adapted motivational interviewing for women with binge eating disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

In this randomized controlled trial, 108 women with binge-eating disorder (BED) recruited from the community were assigned to either an adapted motivational interviewing (AMI) group (1 individual AMI session + self-help handbook) or control group (handbook only). They were phoned 4, 8, and 16 weeks following the initial session to assess binge eating and associated symptoms (depression, self-esteem, quality of life). Postintervention, the AMI group participants were more confident than those in the control group in their ability to change binge eating. Although both groups reported improved bi

Examination of predictors and moderators for self-help treatments of binge-eating disorder.

Predictors and moderators of outcomes were examined in 75 overweight patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) who participated in a randomized clinical trial of guided self-help treatments. Age variables, psychiatric and personality disorder comorbidity, and clinical characteristics were tested as predictors and moderators of treatment outcomes. Current age and age of BED onset did not predict outcomes. Key dimensional outcomes (binge frequency, eating psychopathology, and negative affect) were predominately predicted, but not moderated, by their respective pretreatment levels. Presence of pe

Narcissism and narcissistic defences in the eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between eating pathology and narcissism in an eating-disordered group. Narcissism was conceptualized in terms of both its core element (entitlement, grandiosity) and the narcissistic defenses that are used to maintain self-esteem. METHOD: Seventy non-clinical and 84 eating-disordered patients completed a measure of the different elements of narcissism, and a standardized measure of eating pathology. RESULTS: The eating-disordered group scored higher than the non-clinical women on the measures of core narcissism and of the narcissistically abuse

Reflections on coercion in the treatment of severe anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The high mortality of severe anorexia nervosa causes clinicians to consider any legal avenues for coercing acutely-ill patients to remain in treatment or refeeding programs, such as mental health laws or adult guardianship laws. METHOD: Review of pattern of laws for coercing treatment in various jurisdictions and retrospective file analysis over 4.7 years for a specialist anorexia unit in the State of New South Wales, Australia, to isolate attributes associated with resort to two different avenues of legal coercion. RESULTS: Coercion is most likely indicated for patients with mor

Gender differences in patients with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences in patients with binge eating disorder (BED). METHOD: Participants were 182 adults (35 male, 147 female) who were consecutively evaluated for outpatient clinical trials and met criteria for BED as outlined in the 4th ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. They were administered a battery of measures to examine developmental, eating and weight-related disturbances, and psychological features associated with BED. RESULTS: Men and women did not differ significantly on several developmental variables (age at first overw

Binge and purge behavior among adolescents: associations with sexual and physical abuse in a nationally representative sample: the Commonwealth Fund survey.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine associations between binge and purge behavior and sexual and physical abuse among adolescents; (2) to determine if these associations remain significant after controlling for sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics; and (3) to identify aspects of abuse associated with binge and purge behavior. METHOD: A nationally representative sample of 6728 adolescents in 5th-12th grades completed the Commonwealth Fund Survey of the Health of Adolescent Girls and Boys. RESULTS: Binge and purge behavior was nearly twice as prevalent among girls (13%) as boys (7%), and

EEG sleep and the cholinergic REM induction test in anorexic and bulimic patients.

The electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep of 20 anorexic patients, 10 bulimic patients, and 10 age-matched healthy controls was studied. In addition, six anorexic patients and six bulimic patients had a cholinergic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep induction test (RIT) performed with the cholinergic agent RS 86. The three samples showed no major differences in sleep patterns. The same held true when attention was focused on patients who additionally met DSM-III criteria for major depression. The RIT results were similar in the patients with eating disorders and in controls, but differed from those

Toward a triadic approach in eating disorders: investigating the contribution of the reflexive, affective and interoceptive systems in a clinical data cohort.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) are disabling conditions increasingly conceptualized as addictive disorders. While food addiction (FA) is well documented in bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge-eating disorder (BED), its mechanisms in anorexia nervosa (AN) remain unclear. The triadic model of addiction-encompassing reflexive, affective, and interoceptive systems-offers a relevant framework to investigate FA across EDs. The current study aimed to test to what extent these three components of addiction contribute to FA in patients with ED. METHODS: The sample included 115 patients (mean age = 28.41…

Virtual reality interventions in obesity and eating disorders: a systematic review of biomarker, clinical, and behavioral outcomes.

Obesity and eating disorders (EDs) are major public health challenges associated with high morbidity and mortality. In obesity, VR-enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (VR-CBT) was associated with weight-loss maintenance, while VR-based exercise interventions were associated with short-term reductions in BMI and body weight. Eating Disorders in the Context of Gastrointestinal Diseases-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: The clinical overlap between gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and psychiatric disorders represents a challenge in clinical practice. Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), may co-occur with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and complicate their management. Orthorexia nervosa is a proposed and emerging construct characterized by pathological preoccupation with healthy eating and rigid dietary practices. This narrative review aims to summarize current evidence reg…

Assessment of disordered eating attitudes and associated factors among female undergraduates at Arba Minch University, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders significantly impact physical health and have negative psychosocial consequences. The global burden of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa among young females is estimated to account for 1.9 million disability-adjusted life years. Early identification of disordered eating attitudes is critical for preventing the progression to more severe forms of eating disorders; however, there is limited evidence on this issue among university students in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess disordered eating attitudes and their associated factors among female studen…
