Potential impact of reactive vaccination in controlling cholera outbreaks: an exploratory analysis using a Zimbabwean experience.

BACKGROUND: To contain ongoing cholera outbreaks, the World Health Organization has suggested that reactive vaccination should be considered in addition to its previous control measures. OBJECTIVES: To explore the potential impact of a hypothetical reactive oral cholera vaccination using the example of the recent large-scale cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. METHODS: This was a retrospective cost-effectiveness analysis calculating the health and economic burden of the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe with and without reactive vaccination. The primary outcome measure was incremental cost per disabili…

A simple and rapid HPLC-UV method for the determination of valproic acid in human plasma using microwave-assisted derivatization with phenylhydrazine hydrochloride.

This study presents an efficient high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) method for monitoring valproic acid (VPA) level in human plasma. This method is distinguished by its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and rapid execution, addressing the limitations associated with other advanced analytical techniques like liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and immunoassays, which are generally complex and costly for routine application. A challenge in analyzing VPA is its non-linear protein binding profile and

How Does the Public Evaluate Vaccines for Low-Incidence, Severe-Outcome Diseases? A General-Population Choice Experiment.

BACKGROUND: Because immunizing large numbers of healthy people could be required to reduce a relatively small number of infections, disease incidence has a large impact on cost effectiveness, even if the infection is associated with very serious health outcomes. In addition to cost effectiveness, the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices requires evidence of stakeholders' values and preferences to help inform vaccine recommendations. This study quantified general-population preferences for vaccine trade-offs among disease severity, disease incidence, and other vaccine features. METH

Rapid technologies for animal semen quality assessment, reproductive disease diagnosis, and sperm preservation: A review.

Accurate assessment of animal semen quality is essential for artificial insemination efficiency, genetic resource conservation, and sustainable development of animal husbandry. Although conventional semen evaluation methods (e.g., microscopic morphological observation, flow cytometry, and hypo-osmotic swelling test) have been standardized, they generally suffer from long processing times, dependence on laboratory equipment, and the need for professional operation, making them inadequate for rapid-response scenarios such as on-farm breeding guidance and real-time semen viability monitoring. Evaluation of community-level interventions to increase early initiation of antenatal care in pregnancy: protocol for the Community REACH study, a cluster randomised controlled trial with integrated process and economic evaluations.

BACKGROUND: The provision of high-quality maternity services is a priority for reducing inequalities in health outcomes for mothers and infants. Best practice includes women having their initial antenatal appointment within the first trimester of pregnancy in order to provide screening and support for healthy lifestyles, well-being and self-care in pregnancy. Previous research has identified inequalities in access to antenatal care, yet there is little evidence on interventions to improve early initiation of antenatal care. The Community REACH trial will assess the effectiveness and cost-effec
