An avian-origin influenza H7N9 virus epidemic occurred in China in 2013-2014, in which >422 infected people suffered from pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock. H7N9 viruses belong to the H7 subtype of avian-origin influenza viruses (AIV-H7). Hemagglutinin (HA) is a vital membrane protein of AIV that has an important role in host recognition and infection. The epitopes of HA are significant determinants of the regularity of epidemic and viral mutation and recombination mechanisms. The present study aimed to predict the conserved B-cell epitopes of AIV-H7 HA using a bioinfor

Collagens are members of one of the most important families of structural proteins in higher organisms. There are 28 types of collagens encoded by 43 genes in humans that fall into several different functional protein classes. Mutations in the major fibrillar collagen genes lead to osteogenesis imperfecta (COL1A1 and COL1A2 encoding the chains of Type I collagen), chondrodysplasias (COL2A1 encoding the chains of Type II collagen), and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (COL3A1 encoding the chains of Type III collagen). Over the past 2 decades, mutations in these collagen genes have been catalogue

Elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1alpha) is a constitutively expressed, abundant protein that is a key element in eukaryotic protein translation. Because of its high level of transcription, the EF-1alpha promoter has been utilised to drive exogenous gene expression in transfected cells. In this study, we identified and characterised the ef-1alpha locus of Babesia bovis, a causative agent of bovine babesiosis, and examined the transcriptional activity of the EF-1alpha promoter. The ef-1alpha locus in the T2Bo strain of B. bovis contains two identical ef-1alpha genes ('A' and 'B') arranged in a hea

Uric acid nephrolithiasis (UAN) is a common disease with an established genetic component that presents a complex mode of inheritance. While studying an ancient founder population in Talana, a village in Sardinia, we recently identified a susceptibility locus of approximately 2.5 cM for UAN on 10q21-q22 in a relatively small sample that was carefully selected through genealogical information. To refine the critical region and to identify the susceptibility gene, we extended our analysis to severely affected subjects from the same village. We confirm the involvement of this region in UAN throug

Mammalian adult motor and sensory neurons are thought to reexpress a complement of genes that are originally expressed during development when they regenerate following injury. Therefore, one strategy for identifying key genes involved in development of the peripheral nervous system is to identify those genes reexpressed in the regenerating system. To test this hypothesis, we used the single-base anchor method of mRNA differential display to study changes in gene expression in regenerating adult mammalian sensory neurons. From an initial sample of 36 different primer combinations [3 oligo(dT)M

Phylogenetic analysis of the sequence of the H gene of 75 measles virus (MV) strains (32 published and 43 new sequences) was carried out. The lineage groups described from comparison of the nucleotide sequences encoding the C-terminal regions of the N protein of MV were the same as those derived from the H gene sequences in almost all cases. The databases document a number of distinct genotype switches that have occurred in Madrid (Spain). Well-documented is the complete replacement of lineage group C2, the common European genotype at that time, with that of group D3 around the autumn of 1993.

Aging represents a relevant contributing factor to the development of diseases, in-cluding Parkinson's Disease (PD). Recent researchs on the origin of PD underscored the significant role of genomic and proteomic approaches in examining molecular alterations in the brains. Specifically, the shifts in gene expression patterns asso-ciated with processes like neuroinflammation, oxidative damage, and mitochondrial impairments have been observed. Nevertheless, the intricate connections between aging and this neurodegenerative condition remain partially understood. Recognizing that pinpointing specif

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of childhood morbidity and death globally. Lack of rapid, effective non-sputum diagnosis and prediction methods for TB in children are some of the challenges currently faced. In recent years, blood transcriptional profiling has provided a fresh perspective on the diagnosis and predicting the progression of tuberculosis. Meanwhile, combined with bioinformatics analysis can help to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and functional pathways involved in the different clinical stages of TB. Therefore, this study investigated potential d

BACKGROUND: Biliary atresia (BA) is a severe cholangiopathy of early infancy that destroys cholangiocytes, obstructs ductular pathways and if left untreated, culminates to liver cirrhosis. Mechanisms underlying the etiological heterogeneity remain elusive and few studies have attempted phenotyping BA. We applied machine learning to identify distinct subtypes of BA which correlate with the underlying pathogenesis.
METHODS: The BA microarray dataset GSE46995 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to identify BA su

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) play an important role in cancer growth. Both of them have close relationships. Expression of EGFR will induce an angiogenic factor (VEGF) release for binding with VEGFR2. However, the existence of VEGF up-regulation independent of EGFR leads to cancer cell resistance to anti-EGFR. Therefore, a therapeutic approach targeting EGFR and VEGFR2 simultaneously may improve the outcome of cancer treatment. The present study was designed to identify potential compounds as a dual inhibitor of EGFR and VEG

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution with a significant veterinary and public health impact. It is caused by pathogenic bacteria of the genus Leptospira. The availability of effective tools to accurately identify and type leptospires is of utmost importance for the diagnosis of the disease and for assessing its epidemiology. Several multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) approaches were described for the typing of worldwide isolates of Leptospira but an extensive agreement towards the adoption of a unique consensus scheme for this agent is still lacking.
