Potential role of the skin microbiota in Inflammatory skin diseases.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory skin diseases include a variety of skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and so on, which are more common and tend to have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Inflammatory skin diseases often result in physical or psychological distress; however, the pathogenesis of these diseases have not been clearly elucidated. Many factors are involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory skin diseases, including heredity, environment, immunity, epidermal barrier, mental disorders, infection and so on. In recent years, skin m

The European TREatment of ATopic eczema (TREAT) Registry Taskforce survey: prescribing practices in Europe for phototherapy and systemic therapy in adult patients with moderate-to-severe atopic eczema.

BACKGROUND: For many years dermatologists have had access to few therapies for patients with moderate-to-severe atopic eczema (AE). New promising therapies are entering the market but conventional phototherapies and systemic therapies have more well-known safety profiles, lower costs and wider availability. OBJECTIVES: To provide insight into current prescribing practices of conventional phototherapy and systemic immunomodulatory therapies for adults with chronic AE, and the factors influencing these prescribing practices, before biologics and other novel therapeutics become routine clinical

Immediate contact allergy to birch leaves and sap.

Fresh sap and crushed leaf of birch (Betula verrucosa) were tested with the scratch chamber method in 117 atopic persons, 74 of whom were allergic and 43 nonallergic to birch pollen, and in 33 control patients. Immediate positive reactions to birch sap were seen in 39% and to leaf in 28% of the patients allergic to birch pollen, in one of the birch pollen-negative patients, but in none of the control patients. Birch leaves may cause contact urticaria in the Finnish sauna, where bath whisks made of birch sprigs are traditionally used.

Patch testing in cases of eczema and dermatitis in Beijing, China.

Of 124 patients with eczema and dermatitis patch tested by the European standard series of allergens in the period from April to October 1989, 59 cases showed sensitivity to 1 or more allergens. Potassium dichromate, nickel sulphate and cobalt chloride were the 3 major sensitizers, with a frequency of 17.9%, 13.8% and 10.6%, respectively. The office and factory workers showed a higher incidence of positive reactions than the student group. The environment of the office and the factory seems to be the potential source of exacerbating factors of eczematous skin disease.

Infliximab therapy in an infant with Netherton syndrome.

We present a patient with Netherton syndrome and severe skin manifestations treated with infliximab. By 6 months of age, the child had intractable pruritus, scaling, dry skin, and generalized eczematous lesions resistant to conventional therapies for atopic dermatitis. Clinical improvement was observed following the third infusion of infliximab, and by 12 months of age, the skin lesions completely resolved. Infliximab is a promising option for the management of skin inflammation in Netherton syndrome, even in infants.

"Eczema" of the nape: A marker of pthiriasis capitis.

Pthirus pubis usually infests the pubis, inguinal folds, buttocks and perianal region. In hairy males or when the infestation is longstanding, this louse can also occur on the thighs, abdomen, chest, axillae and beard. Eyelashes may be involved in children. The involvement of the scalp is very rare. We describe four girls with P. pubis infestation located exclusively on the scalp which was characterized by a rash on the nape that can suggest a head and neck form of atopic dermatitis.

THE AUTOIMMUNE CONSTELLATION IN LICHEN AMYLOIDOSIS.

Localized cutaneous amyloidosis is a rare disease among white people, being more common in South-Asia, China and South America. The disease is characterized by deposition of amyloid material in the papillary dermis without visceral involvement. Nevertheless, there is a growing list of immune-mediated disorders that have been linked to cutaneous amyloidosis. We present two cases of concomitant occurrence of lichen amyloidosis and autoimmune thyroiditis/atopic dermatitis in two Caucasian women.

Dermatology of the lips: inflammatory diseases.

The sensitive transitional skin of the lips is a favored site for primary skin diseases, especially eczematous dermatitis. An inflammatory condition of the lips, eg chapped lips (cheilitis sicca) in atopic eczema, may be the only manifestation of a skin disease or appear as part of a generalized dermatosis. Inflammatory changes to the lips also occur in the context of systemic disorders such as lupus erythematosus or in allergic diseases. This article presents the most frequent and the most important forms of inflammatory cheilitis.

Severe Dupilumab-Associated Psoriasis Flare After Switching From Ustekinumab for Biopsy-Proven Eczematous Dermatitis: A Case Report.

Dupilumab is an effective treatment for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis but has been increasingly associated with paradoxical psoriasis and psoriasiform manifestations. Severe exacerbation of pre-existing psoriasis following dupilumab therapy remains uncommon and presents a therapeutic challenge. We report a patient with well-controlled chronic plaque psoriasis who developed eczematous dermatitis with histopathological findings consistent with the diagnosis. Although dupilumab effectively controlled the eczema, the patient subsequently developed a severe generalized psoriasis flare after

Newborn skin: Part I. Common rashes.

Rashes are extremely common in newborns and can be a significant source of parental concern. Although most rashes are transient and benign, some require additional work-up. Erythema toxicum neonatorum, acne neonatorum, and transient neonatal pustular melanosis are transient vesiculopustular rashes that can be diagnosed clinically based on their distinctive appearances. Infants with unusual presentations or signs of systemic illness should be evaluated for Candida, viral, and bacterial infections. Milia and miliaria result from immaturity of skin structures. Miliaria rubra (also known as heat r

Surveillance scheme for occupational skin disease in the Saarland, FRG. First report from BKH-S.

Occupational skin disease (OSD) is a significant public health concern. To keep OSDs under surveillance, a register of OSDs (BKH-S) was implemented in 1999 in the Saarland, FRG. We conducted a population-based register study to analyse all initial reports of OSDs reported to the BKH-S. 336 cases were prospectively assessed from July 1999 to June 2001. In 78% (n = 263) of the cases an occupational cause for the skin disease was stated, 91% (n = 240) of which fell within 16 occupational groups. This is equivalent to 6.8 cases per 10,000 workers per year within these occupational groups. Notably,

A review of patch-test data over the period of eight years in the allergy and immunology department in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Patch testing is the primary diagnostic approach for contact dermatitis,1 an inflammatory skin reaction caused by exposure to external irritants. The pathophysiology of contact dermatitis may entail an immunological response (hypersensitivity type IV), a non-immunological response (irritant contact dermatitis), or a mix of the two. The diagnosis of contact dermatitis requires a correlation between a positive patch test and clinical relevance.2 This study aims to determine the prevalence of allergy sensitization among adults in Qatar and the allergens most frequently associated with

Lirentelimab for severe and chronic forms of allergic conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is an ocular inflammatory disease with symptoms driven by eosinophils and mast cells. Allergic comorbidities are common. Current treatments are often ineffective in severe AC and limited by potential side effects. Lirentelimab is an anti-sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-8 mAb that depletes eosinophils and inhibits mast cells. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine safety and preliminary efficacy of lirentelimab in an open-label, phase 1b study. METHODS: Patients with chronic, severely symptomatic atopic keratoconjunctivitis, vernal keratoconj
