Mental retardation with pterygia, shortness and distinct facial appearance. A new MCA/MR syndrome.

During a systematic survey of the mentally retarded, 3 related females were seen with a similar syndrome of shortness, unusual combination of craniofacial anomalies (trigonocephaly; bulging forehead; flat face; posteriorly angulated, lowset ears and microretrognathia), and genital hypoplasia in all 3 cases, and multiple pterygia in one. The facial changes were also noted in 2 grandmothers and may indicate autosomal dominant inheritance of this presently "private" MCA/MR syndrome.

Hutterite cerebro-osteo-nephrodysplasia: autosomal recessive trait in a Lehrerleut Hutterite family from Montana.

We are reporting on two Lehrerleut Hutterite sisters who have a syndrome of congenital shortness with mild spondylorhizomelic dwarfism; later failure to thrive, ie deceleration of weight gain presumably due to CNS-based severe feeding problems; a CNS defect, probably developmental (not biochemical) with normal prenatal brain growth but later deceleration from 50th to 2nd centile associated with severe mental retardation and decorticate disturbances of neurologic function; and possible renal involvement with terminal nephrotic syndrome. This seems to be a previously undescribed pleiotropic auto

Prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors block alcohol-induced fetal hypoplasia.

Alcohol-induced growth retardation is a fetal effect consistently associated with maternal ethanol consumption. In humans, those infants whose mothers consume even a limited amount of ethanol during pregnancy have a significant incidence of growth inhibition. The molecular mechanism responsible for this growth deficiency is unknown, and prevention depends on maternal abstinence during pregnancy. The data reported here suggest that ethanol-mediated increases in tissue prostaglandin (PG) E levels (PGE1 plus PGE2) are correlated with the growth retardation. Further, simultaneous administration of

[Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome. Case report and review of the literature].

The Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome is inherited in an autosomal recessive mode and is clinically characterized by mental retardation, small stature mainly due to a short vertebral column with thoracal kyphosis, protruding sternum, reduced articular mobility, and in most cases also by microcephaly. Specific radiologic findings concern the vertebral column, the pelvis, and the hands. A patient suffering from this syndrome is presented, the literature is summarized, and the clinical and radiologic manifestations are reviewed. As in two cases studied by others [27], the incorporation of radioact

Kabuki make-up syndrome: a syndrome of mental retardation, unusual facies, large and protruding ears, and postnatal growth deficiency.

A previously unrecognized mental retardation malformation syndrome was observed in five unrelated Japanese children. Consistent clinical features included moderate-to-severe mental retardation, progressive dwarfism of postnatal onset, a peculiar facies characterized by long palpebral fissures, with eversion of the lateral third of the lower eyelids, arched eyebrows, broad and depressed nasal tip, large prominent earlobes, short fifth fingers, abnormal dermatoglyphics including absence of digital triradius c or d, and frequent otitis media in infancy. Inconsistent abnormalities included epicant

Severe mental deficiency, proportionate dwarfism, and delayed sexual maturation. A distinct inherited syndrome.

Two 46,XY brothers were found to have a previously undescribed syndrome characterized by severe mental deficiency, proportionate dwarfism, and delayed sexual development. A recessive mode of inheritance, either autosomal or X-linked, is assumed.

[Partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 3. Report of a case (author's transl)].

A patient with partial deletion 3p is reported. Only one other patient has been previously reported in the literature. Features the two share include microcephaly, failure to thrive, ptosis, symophrys, a broad and flat nose, a prominent maxilla, an over developed chin, and an increased number of loops on the finger tips. These observations are compared in type and countertype with known observations of trisomy 3p and of 3q duplication/3p deletion.

A digitopalatal syndrome with associated anomalies of the heart, face, and skeleton.

A syndrome of multiple anomalies associated with growth failure and delayed development is described. The facies appear distinctive with globular head, prominence of the eyes, hypertelorism, cleft palate, micrognathia, and abnormal pinnae. Other features include vertebral and costal anomalies, cardiac defects, and a peculiar malformation of the hands. At least five other cases of this condition, all occurring in males, may be found in medical reports. The finding of incomplete expression in three maternal relatives of our patient provides evidence for a genetic cause.

[Coeliac disease: an analysis of the clinical data in 176 patients (author's transl)].

A retrospective analysis of the case histories of 176 infants and children with documented coeliac disease born between 1953 and 1975 revealed the following data: Gluten was introduced into the diet of 49% of these patients at an age of 3 to 4 months. The interval between the introduction of gluten and the appearance of first symptoms was very variable and independent of age, occurring within 4 weeks in 32% and within 2 weeks in 20% of cases. In 13% this interval was 6 to 13 months. 91% of cases presented during the first year of life. Signs were also variable, the most frequent combination be

Aarskog syndrome: significance for the surgeon.

A familial syndrome of short stature associated with facial dysplasia and congenital anomalies was reported by Aarskog in 1970. Subsequently, at least 53 patients in 13 affected families have been reported. The family to be described came under investigation following referral of one of the nine siblings to the surgical clinic at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles for the evaluation of a right inguinal hernia. Recognition of the syndrome and further evaluation of the remaining siblings led to the diagnosis of several genital anomalies requiring surgical correction.

An abnormal dicentric X chromosome in a patient with short stature and gonadal dysgenesis.

A 16 year-old girl with short stature and gonadal dysgenesis was found to have a chromosomal complement consisting of 46,X,dic(X) (qter yields p22::p22 yields qter). When comparing her clinical features with 7 other cases who appeared to have precisely the same abnormal dicentric X, it was found that even though the percent of 45,X cells present varied considerably from patient to patient, these patients were remarkably similar and the stigmata, of Turner's syndrome were minimal in this group as a whole.

Somatomedin and growth retardation in children with chronic renal insufficiency.

The somatomedins are a family of growth hormone-dependent insulin-like peptides which have been postulated to mediate the actions of pituitary growth hormone on skeletal tissue. The somatomedin peptides are part of a larger family of growth factors. Somatomedin has been measured by bioassays, by radioreceptor assays, and recently by a radioimmunoassay. Bioassays are influenced by glucocorticoids, sulfate, heparin, and other inhibitors; radioreceptor assays from different laboratories presently give conflicting results but early experience with the immunoassay is promising. Somatomedin levels a

Neuroendocrine dysfunction in depressive illness.

Patients with severe depressive illnesses of the endogenomorphic type frequently manifest several hormonal abnormalities. The best documented are the hypersecretion of cortisol, particularly in the late evening and early morning, associated with relative resistance to dexamethasone suppression; diminished or absent HGH responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia; and diminished TSH responses to TRH. There are also reports from one laboratory of relatively diminished plasma LH concentration in postmenopausal women with primary unipolar depressive illness, a finding that awaits replication by othe
