Radionuclide imaging of nonosseous infection.

Nuclear medicine is an important tool in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with a variety of nonosseous infections. In the immunocompetent population labeled leukocyte imaging is the radionuclide procedure of choice, with Gallium imaging reserved for those situations in which the leukocyte study is nondiagnostic or cannot be performed. Fever of unknown origin is caused by infection in less than one-third of cases, and therefore the number of positive leukocyte studies will be relatively low. The negative leukocyte study is also useful, however, as it has been demonstrated that a negative s

Isolation of intertypic recombinants of Epstein-Barr virus from T-cell-immunocompromised individuals.

All wild-type isolates of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) analyzed to date for allelic polymorphisms of the nuclear antigen EBNA2 gene (in the BamHI YH region of the genome) and of the EBNA3A,-3B, -3C genes (tandemly arranged in the BamHI E region) have proved either uniformly type 1 or uniformly type 2 at all four loci. The absence of detectable intertypic recombination in the wild probably reflects the rarity with which individual carriers, and certainly individual target cells, become coinfected with both virus types. Studying a group of human immunodeficiency virus-positive T-cell-immunocompromis

Trends, Gaps, and Challenges in Antiviral Resistance: A Bibliometric Analysis and Narrative Synthesis of Key Viruses, Resistance Mechanisms, and Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses mutate faster than bacteria and most DNA viruses, yet our understanding of mutation-induced viral resistance remains limited compared with bacterial resistance. This has resulted in a fragmented global research landscape on antiviral resistance. AIM: This study is aimed at providing a holistic understanding of the global research landscape of antiviral resistance using bibliometric approach and narrative synthesis. METHODS: Both PubMed and Scopus database was systematically searched following the Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic L

Longitudinal prevalence and correlates of dynapenic abdominal obesity among community-dwelling ageing adults in rural South Africa from 2015 to 2022.

The frequency and correlates of dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) in ageing adults have not been assessed in a longitudinal study in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to identify these characteristics and their prevalence using three-wave longitudinal data from South Africa. Data from three waves of the “Health and Ageing in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa (HAALSI)” (2014/2015–2022) were utilized. Community residents (≥ 40 years) with complete measurements of waist circumference and handgrip strength were included in the sample (analytic sample: n = 1107

ViralMap: predicting features in viral proteins from primary sequence.

Modern viral vaccines are designed to elicit an immune response against viral proteins that mediate infection, making those proteins important targets for characterization and engineering. To improve vaccine efficacy, the proteins often require changes to specific residues or domains to enhance immunogenicity and induce a protective response. These engineering strategies vary significantly across viruses, making comprehensive and accurate protein sequence annotation a crucial step for guiding vaccine design. The growing risk of novel pathogen emergence and initiatives such as the CEPI 100 Days

Risk factors for treatment failure of drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis: results from a two-decade data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) remains a major public health challenge worldwide, particularly in Eastern Europe, where high disease burden and complex treatment regimens contribute to suboptimal outcomes. Lithuania has historically reported high rates of pulmonary DR-TB; however, data on long-term treatment outcomes and their determinants over extended periods are limited. This study evaluated long-term treatment outcomes among adults with pulmonary DR-TB in Lithuania over a 22-year period and assessed associations between treatment outcomes, individual risk factors, and temp

Virologic failure and its determinants among HIV patients progress towards the third 95% global target in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS endorsed a new striving 95–95-95 target to end the AIDS epidemic by the end of 2030. This initiative has been implemented by many countries, including Ethiopia, but achieving it requires paramount effort. The purpose of this study was to determine the pooled virologic failure and its determinants using available evidence in Ethiopia. METHODS: We searched available evidence on virologic failure from databases PubMed, Hinari, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and other search engines until May 30, 2024. Two authors independently sea

Incidence and predictors of loss to follow-up among adults on antiretroviral therapy in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) from antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains a major public health concern worldwide, including in Ethiopia. However, nationally representative pooled cohort data on LTFU among adults receiving ART are limited. To address this gap, we conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the incidence and identify predictors of LTFU among adults on ART in Ethiopia. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. Relevant studies were identified through a comprehensive search of multiple databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, EMBASE, a

Optimal testing frequency for sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men and transgender women who use HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in Australia, Brazil and Thailand: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV, but not other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). PrEP users are offered periodic STI testing for early detection of STIs, including Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and syphilis. However, the optimal and most cost-effective frequency for separate and combined STI testing in PrEP users has yet to be established. METHODS: We constructed dynamic transmission models and simulated the epidemic trajectories of three STIs (CT, NG

Exploring Nurses' Perception of Stigma in Intensive Care Units: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is a sociological concept that is important in healthcare settings because it threatens health as much as the disease itself. The consequences of stigma are profound, as those who are stagmatised often face systematic exclusion from healthcare and endure social isolation, diminished self-esteem, depresssion, self-harm, and deteriorating physical and mental health. Limited information is available on nurses' perception of stigma in ICUs and how it affects their attitudes, behaviours and overall well-being when caring for patients with a broader range of stigmatised conditions

Emergence of the BA.2.87.1 lineage of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa, a highly diverged BA.2-related lineage.

The emergence of various SARS-CoV-2 lineages with adaptive mutations is of significant concern worldwide, especially when these mutations enhance the virus's ability to either evade immune responses or transmit more efficiently. Between September and December 2023, a highly diverged BA.2-related lineage, designated BA.2.87.1, was detected through diagnostic testing, syndromic surveillance, and wastewater surveillance in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng provinces of South Africa. This lineage harbours 20 amino acid substitutions in Spike protein relative to basel
