Preeclampsia is one of the most severe complications of the pregnancy, and trials to estimate a panel of predictive markers are of big interest for multiple researches. Corin is a transmembrane serine protease, localized in the heart, which is converting pro-ANP in to active ANR. ANP is a hormone regulating salt haemostasis and arterial bood pressure. Corin-null experimental pregnant mices develop arterial hypertention and proteinuria, and increased Corin exprecion in to the decidua of human uterus suggests its potential role during pregnancy. It is proven it takes place in throphoblast invasi

HCV is a cause of acute and chronic liver diseases, including chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Under natural conditions, HCV is able to infect only humans, and only chimpanzees are sensitive to experimental infection. In recent years, viruses genetically related to HCV were discovered in wild mammals (rodents, bats, rabbits), as well as in domestic animals living in close contact with humans (dogs, horses, cows). The hepacivirus genus of the family Flaviviridae, previously represented only by HCV and, presumably, by GBV-B, now includes new related viruses of animals.

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), the first human virus related to oncogenesis, was initially identified in a Burkitt lymphoma cell line in 1964. EBV infects over 90% of the world's population. Most infected people maintain an asymptomatic but persistent EBV infection lifelong. However, in some individuals, EBV infection has been involved in the development of cancer and autoimmune disease. Nowadays, oncogenic potential of EBV has been intensively studied in a wide range of human neoplasms, including Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), gastric carcino

AIM: Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) are the most important source for TB infection, being the risk of infection determined by the source case infectiousness and the contact closeness. Currently, the administration of isoniazid is used to prevent the infection to some extent in household contacts. At experimental level, defensins are efficient molecules for the treatment of TB and other infectious diseases.
MATERIALS & METHODS: In this work, we used a model of Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission by long cohabitation of infected and noninfected mice, and treated the latter group

In human walking, toes play an important role in supporting the body and controlling the forward motion. These functions are achieved by muscles and tendons around toe joints. To further understand the importance of toe and how toe muscle functions affect the locomotion, we employ a simple bipedal walking model with compliant joints. The ankle joints and toe joints are modeled as torsional springs and the actuation patterns are similar to that of normal human walking. Experimental results show that adding adaptable compliant toe joints could benefit the stability and energy efficiency. By gene

Identification of driver mutations in human diseases is often limited by cohort size and availability of appropriate statistical models. We propose a framework for the systematic discovery of genetic alterations that are causal determinants of disease, by prioritizing genes upstream of functional disease drivers, within regulatory networks inferred de novo from experimental data. We tested this framework by identifying the genetic determinants of the mesenchymal subtype of glioblastoma. Our analysis uncovered KLHL9 deletions as upstream activators of two previously established master regulator

Cross-complementation studies offer the possibility to overcome limitations imposed by the inherent complexity of multicellular organisms in the study of human diseases, by taking advantage of simpler model organisms like the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This review deals with, (1) the use of S. cerevisiae as a model organism to study human diseases, (2) yeast-based screening systems for the detection of disease modifiers, (3) Hailey-Hailey as an example of a calcium-related disease, and (4) the presentation of a yeast-based model to search for chemical modifiers of Hailey-Hailey di

Pulmonary TB remains a leading global health issue, but the current Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine fails to control it effectively. Much effort has gone into developing safe and effective boost vaccine candidates for use after the BCG prime vaccination. To date, almost all the lead candidates are being evaluated clinically via a parenteral route. Abundant experimental evidence suggests that parenteral boosting with a virus-based vaccine is much less effective than respiratory mucosal boosting, because the former fails to activate a type of T cell capable of rapidly transmigrating into t

A simple and sensitive spectrofluorimetric method has been developed and validated for determination of amikacin sulfate, neomycin sulfate and tobramycin in pure forms, pharmaceutical formulations and human plasma. The method was based on condensation reaction of cited drugs with ninhydrin and phenylacetaldehyde in buffered medium (pH 6) resulting in formation of fluorescent products which exhibit excitation and emission maxima at 395 and 470nm, respectively. The different experimental parameters affecting the development and stability of the reaction products were carefully studied and optimi

The world production of copper is steadily increasing. Although humans are widely exposed to copper-containing items on the skin and mucosa, allergic reactions to copper are only infrequently reported. To review the chemistry, biology and accessible data to clarify the implications of copper hypersensitivity, a database search of PubMed was performed with the following terms: copper, dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, contact hypersensitivity, contact sensitization, contact allergy, patch test, dental, IUD, epidemiology, clinical, and experimental. Human exposure to copper is relatively

Human T cell Lymphotropic Viruses 1 and 2 (HTLV-1 and HTLV-2) are the first described human retroviruses. HTLV-1 is the causative agent of an aggressive malignancy of CD4+ T lymphocytes named adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and of a chronic neurological disease known as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). HTLV-2 shares many similarities with HTLV-1, but displays lower or absent association to diseases. Among the proteins encoded by HTLVs, the viral transactivator Tax exerts an essential role in viral transcription as well as in cell transformation. Differ

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is transmitted via the fecal-oral route and has been recognized as a common source of large waterborne outbreaks involving contaminated water in developing countries. Thus, there is the need to produce experimental data on the disinfection kinetics of HEV by chlorine in water samples with diverse levels of fecal contamination. Here, the inactivation of HEV and human adenovirus C serotype 2 (HAdV2), used as a reference virus, was monitored using immunofluorescence and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays. HEV has been shown to be

Two series of non-symmetrical bisquaternary pyridinium-quinolinium and pyridinium-isoquinolinium compounds were prepared as molecules potentially applicable in myasthenia gravis treatment. Their inhibitory ability towards human recombinant acetylcholinesterase and human plasmatic butyrylcholinesterase was determined and the results were compared to the known effective inhibitors such as ambenonium dichloride, edrophonium bromide and experimental compound BW284C51. Two compounds, 1-(10-(pyridinium-1-yl)decyl)quinolinium dibromide and 1-(12-(pyridinium-1-yl)dodecyl)quinolinium dibromide, showed

The lens and retina of the human eye are exposed constantly to light and oxygen. In situ phototransduction and oxidative phosphorylation within photoreceptors produces a high level of phototoxic and oxidative related stress. Within the eye, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are present in high concentrations in contrast to other human tissues. We discuss the role of lutein and zeaxanthin in ameliorating light and oxygen damage, and preventing age-related cellular and tissue deterioration in the eye. Epidemiologic research shows an inverse association between levels of lutein and zeaxanthin

Experimental transplantation of endocrine tissues has led to significant advances in our understanding of endocrinology and metabolism. Endocrine cell transplantation therapy is expected to be applied to the treatment of metabolic endocriopathies. Restoration of functional pancreatic beta-cell mass or of functional adipose mass are reasonable treatment approaches for patients with diabetes or lipodystrophy, respectively. Human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell research is having a great impact on life sciences. Doctors Takahashi and Yamanaka discovered that the forced expression of a set of

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue conduction (STC) is a recently described mode of auditory stimulation in which vibrations induced by a clinical bone vibrator applied to soft tissue sites on the head, neck, and thorax of human subjects reach the cochlea and elicit auditory sensation. In humans, STC stimulation interacts with air conduction stimulation and with bone conduction (BC) stimulation in several ways, e.g., mutual masking.
METHODS: This study investigated whether mutual masking between STC and BC stimulation can be demonstrated in an experimental animal. In fat sand rats, auditory nerve and br

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a life-threatening, typically drug-induced, mucocutaneous disease. TEN has a high mortality rate, making early diagnosis and treatment of paramount importance. New but experimental diagnostic tools that measure serum granulysin and high-mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1) offer the potential to differentiate early TEN from other, less serious drug reactions, but these tests have not been validated and are not readily available. The mainstay of treatment for TEN involves discontinuation of the offending drug, specialized care in an intensive care unit or burn c

Taenia solium causes cysticercosis in pigs and taeniasis and neurocysticercosis in humans. Oncosphere antigens have proven to be effective as vaccines to protect pigs against an experimental infection with T. solium. A pair-matched vaccination trial field, using a combination of two recombinant antigens, TSOL16 and TSOL18, was undertaken in rural villages of Peru to evaluate the efficacy of this vaccine under natural conditions. Pairs of pigs (n=137) comprising one vaccinated and one control animal, were allocated to local villagers. Animals received two vaccinations with 200 μg of each of TSO

Is Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) a transmissible fungal disease? Does nosocomial PcP occur? Is there Pneumocystis transmission in the community? These questions, which could not be tackled before the 2000s, may at present be approached using either noninvasive detection methods or experimental transmission models. Represented by a unique entity (P. carinii) for almost one century, the Pneumocystis genus was shown to contain several species, being P. jirovecii the sole species identified in humans hitherto. Molecular methods combined with cross infection experiments revealed strong host specific

Ocular inflammation is one of the leading causes of blindness and loss of vision. Human uveitis is a complex and heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by inflammation of intraocular tissues. The eye may be the only organ involved, or uveitis may be part of a systemic disease. A significant number of cases are of unknown etiology and are labeled idiopathic. Animal models have been developed to the study of the physiopathogenesis of autoimmune uveitis due to the difficulty in obtaining human eye inflamed tissues for experiments. Most of those models are induced by injection of specific p
