Ensemble localized patch residual convolution neural networks for pneumonia detection using chest X-ray.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a life-threatening disease, especially in infants and older individuals. Chest X-ray is the most common method for the detection of lung inflammation especially when the causes of pneumonia are unknown. However, the evaluation of X-ray images requires special human expertise hence, the detection process can be error-prone and is also time- and resource-consuming. Automating the pneumonia-detection process from chest X-ray using a computer algorithm will improve precision, save time and resources. METHODS: In this manuscript, a deep learning strategy called an ensemble

Novel Deep Learning Model to Estimate Knee Flexion and Adduction Moments With Wearable IMUs During Treadmill and Overground Walking.

A major issue after total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is asymmetric gait kinetics, which increases knee loads on the non-operated knee. This imbalance accelerates osteoarthritis (OA) progression, often leading to a second contralateral TKR. There is a clear need for an advanced wearable system with multiple sensors to accurately estimate gait kinetics in natural environments. This study aims to develop a machine learning framework that exclusively uses wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) during overground and treadmill walking to estimate knee flexion moment (KFM) and knee adduction

Brain Region-Centered MultiModal Hypergraph Fusion for MCI Conversion Prediction.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as its prodromal stage. Accurate MCI conversion prediction is critical for early intervention and resource allocation. Recently, deep learning-based multimodal neuroimaging fusion has become a hot research topic in AI-assisted AD diagnosis. Existing multimodal fusion approaches are limited by modality heterogeneity, insufficient ability to model inter-regional interactions, and insufficient interpretability. To address these challenges, BRC-MMHF, a Brain Region-Centered MultiModal Hypergr

Forecasting hospital bed occupancy: a time series approach with prophet.

BACKGROUND: Accurate hospital bed occupancy forecasting is essential for effective resource planning and patient flow management. While complex machine learning models have gained popularity in healthcare forecasting, their operational utility often falls short due to high maintenance costs and limited interpretability. This study evaluates the performance and practicality of Prophet, a parsimonious time-series model, for mid-term hospital bed occupancy forecasting. METHODS: We applied the Prophet model to daily bed occupancy data from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg (2010-2023),

ACGM: Attribute-Centric Graph Modeling Network for Concurrent Missing Tabular Data Imputation and COVID-19 Prognosis.

COVID-19 prognosis using clinical tabular data faces significant challenges due to missing values and class imbalance issues. Existing methods often overlook the complex high-order interrelationship among clinicalattributes and struggle with training stability on imbalanced datasets. We propose ACGM, an attribute-centric graph modeling network that simultaneously addresses missing data imputation and COVID-19 prognosis. ACGM consists of three key modules: an attributes preprocessing module (APM) for coarse-grained imputation initialization, a graph-enhanced attributes imputation module (GEAIM)

PDSNet: Patient-Disease Dual Spatial Similarity Neural Networks for Predicting Heart Failure Risk Using Short Electronic Health Records.

Heart failure (HF) is a complex and heterogeneous syndrome caused by diverse factors, such as atrial fibrillation, diabetes, and pulmonary hypertension. The intricate pathophysiology of HF, coupled with variability in patient demographics and presentations, poses significant challenges to the effectiveness of existing deep learning models in HF risk prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel deep neural network, PDSNet, which leverages a new dual patient-disease spatial similarity strategy to improve HF risk prediction using short electronic health records. First, we develop ontology graphs

TwinRL-Onco: A World Model-Empowered Digital Twin Framework with Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning for Venetoclax Resistance Trajectory Prediction and Adaptive Therapy Optimization in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) presents considerable therapeutic obstacles due to the development of treatment-resistant disease, especially with BCL-2 inhibitors like venetoclax, and is among the most challenging haematological malignancies to treat. A critical unmet computational need is the ability to predict patient-specific treatment resistance trajectories and to develop optimal adaptive therapy schedules based on a patient's history and experience with treatments. To address these issues, we have developed TwinRL-Onco, a novel computational framework that fuses digital twin technol

Prediction of malignancy and metastasis of thyroid cancer by combined feature sets through advanced machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Predicting thyroid cancer (TC) and its accompanying metastasis remains challenging because of the complexity of the disease and its diverse pathological subtypes. The complexity and variability of TC necessitate innovative approaches that leverage machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) for enhanced accuracy in diagnosis and lymph node metastasis (LNM) prediction. METHODS: 803 patients were examined using ultrasound for thyroid nodules, inculing 369 benign nodules, and 433 malignant nodules, of which 118 were LNM. Altered Sensorimotor Lateralization and Cross-modal Consistency in Stroke: A Simultaneous EEG-fNIRS Study.

Stroke often leads to motor impairment and is associated with disruptions in sensorimotor pathways and altered cortical lateralization. Although understanding these changes is essential for interpreting post-stroke neural reorganization, it remains unclear whether they are consistently reflected at both neural and hemodynamic levels. This study aimed to investigate cross-modal consistency using simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). EEG and fNIRS signals were recorded from stroke patients and age-matched healthy controls during unilateral h

Development and psychometric evaluation of a decision quality instrument for lung cancer screening decisions (DQI-LCS).

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer screening (LCS) reduces lung cancer mortality among high-risk individuals. As the screening procedure has both potential benefits and harms, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services mandates a shared decision-making (SDM) discussion prior to the initial LCS. We evaluated the psychometric properties of a decision quality instrument for LCS (DQI-LCS) that assesses whether patients (1) were informed about their options (knowledge), (2) made a screening decision in line with their preferences (goal concordance), and (3) underwent an optimal SDM process (measured using t

Spatiospectral Representation and Neural Decoding of Somatic Perception of Acupuncture Stimulations.

Characterizing the neural representations underlying somatic perception is crucial for neural decoding of external stimulations. Acupuncture is an important therapeutic method of traditional Chinese medicine and can effectively modulate brain activity for the treatment of neural diseases. In this work, we investigate the neural representations based on the power spectral density (PSD) estimated from electroencephalogram (EEG) across the whole brain with deep learning. Frequency and spatial characteristics of PSD can reliably represent the dynamical brain responses to acupuncture with different

APSevLM: Acute Pancreatitis Severity Language Model.

Approximately one-fifth of patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) develop severe forms, which are associated with high mortality rates, making early prediction of severity crucial for effective patient management. In this study, we present APSevLM (Acute Pancreatitis Severity Language Model), a large language model (LLM)-based approach that integrates admission-time clinical data, imaging reports, and expert knowledge to predict AP severity at an early stage. Through a comprehensive evaluation using data from over five hundred patients, APSevLM outperforms traditional scoring systems (BISAP and

FusSADGCNN: Decoding the Impact of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation on Neuromodulation in Emotion Recognition and Emotion Elicitation.

Emotional neuromodulation refers to the direct manipulation of the nervous system using techniques such as electrical or magnetic stimulation to manage and adjust an individual's emotional experiences. Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) targeting the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) has been widely used to modulate emotions. However, the impact of emotions on brain network changes and modulation during tES remains unclear. In this study, we developed a subject-adaptive dynamic graph convolution network with fused features (FusSADGCNN) to decode the impact of tES on neuromo

Enhancing Trustworthiness of Semantic Segmentation in Cataract Surgery Videos via Intra-Phase Label Propagation.

Accurate segmentation of semantic features is a pivotal procedure for cataract surgery assistance, surgical skill assessment and related applications. However, previous studies have failed to consider the instance-level feature similarity of instruments across different surgical phases in cataract surgery videos, leading to unreliable decision-making regarding instrument categories. In this study, we propose a label propagation framework to effectively leverage the consistency of phase-specific instruments, which utilizes the initial frame labels from each surgical phase to predict masks for t

TFCDiff: Robust ECG Denoising via Time-Frequency Complementary Diffusion.

Ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) readings are prone to mixed noise from physical activities, including baseline wander (BW), muscle artifact (MA), and electrode motion artifact (EM). Developing a method to remove such complex noise and reconstruct high-fidelity signals is clinically valuable for diagnostic accuracy. How ever, denoising of multi-beat ECG segments remains understudied and poses technical challenges. To address this, we propose Time-Frequency Complementary Diffusion (TFCDiff), a novel approach that models ECG signals in the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain. To refine wave

Value Decomposition-Based Multi-Agent Learning for Anesthetics Collaborative Control.

Automated control of personalized multiple anesthetics in clinical Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) is crucial yet challenging. Current systems, including target-controlled infusion (TCI) and closed-loop systems, either rely on relatively static pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models or focus on single anesthetic control. So they limit both personalization and collaborative control. To address these issues, we propose a novel Value Decomposition Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (VD-MADRL) framework based on Markov Game (MG) for Personalized Multiple Anesthetics Control in a C

Refocal Loss in Transformer for Long-Tailed Multi-Granularity Cataract Classification.

Different cataract types and various severities usually require different countermeasures. For automatic cataract diagnosis, existing cataract classification methods group cataracts into common types, such as nuclear cataract, cortical cataract, and posterior subcapsular cataract, while existing cataract grading works aim to achieve fine-grained evaluation of the severity of the most common types of cataract. The severity assessment differs among various types of cataracts. Existing work is limited in predicting various cataract types at different granularity levels. In order to improve diagno

A Fine-Grained Diagnostic Method for Sleep Apnea Based on Target Detection Network With SpO2 and Nasal Airflow.

The extant automatic diagnostic technologies for sleep apnea primarily focus on the accuracy of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) estimation and severity classification, ignoring the accurate annotation for abnormal respiratory events. Motivated by target detection principle, we proposed a fine-grained diagnostic method called apnea-hypopnea event detector (AHE-Detector) in this paper. Through fusing time-frequency features of pulse oxygen saturation and nasal airflow signal, our model can accurately identify abnormal respiratory events on the continuous time axis. The model specifically contains thr
