Sculpted by Love: Attachment Security and the Michelangelo Phenomenon.

The Michelangelo phenomenon describes an interpersonal model of personal growth in which romantic partners affirm each other's ideal selves, thereby enhancing their relational and personal well-being. The present study examined how attachment security relates to this process. Based on cross-sectional data from N = 452 individuals in 258 couples, the results replicated prior work and provided new insights. Greater partner affirmation was associated with higher relationship quality, higher life satisfaction, and lower depression, but was not associated with general anxiety. Movement toward the i

Diabetes-related complications and multiple long-term conditions in sub-Saharan Africa: determinants and management strategies.

Saharan Africa is experiencing a rapid increase in the burden of diabetes, accompanied by increasing rates of microvascular, macrovascular, and pregnancy-related complications. This Series paper synthesises current evidence on diabetes-related complications in sub-Saharan Africa and examines shared cardiometabolic risks, mental health comorbidities, and interactions with communicable diseases through a multiple long-term conditions lens. Widespread late diagnosis and inadequate control of key cardiometabolic risk factors (eg, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obesity, and hyperglycaemia) drive high

"I've Been Forged in Fire": Preliminary Theory of HIV Prevention Resilience Among Sexual Minority Men With HIV Risk Factors.

HIV prevention research on sexual minority men focuses predominantly on risk factors, yet there is potential for enhancing HIV risk reduction by also examining resilience factors. We used mixed methods to explore HIV-related resilience pathways among 20 HIV-negative sexual minority men reporting HIV syndemic risks (childhood sexual abuse, partner abuse, mental health problems, substance abuse). Using grounded theory, we found that stress-related growth after mental health problems and/or unwanted sexual experiences can trigger development/use of HIV prevention resilience resources that, in tur

Community relationship quality and reincarceration following rural drug-using women's reentry from jail.

Interpersonal relationships and social support are important factors in women's successful reentry from incarceration, but limited research has explored the role of women's relationships to their communities during the reentry process. In the current study, women were recruited from three rural Appalachian jails, screened for high-risk behaviors (including drug use and unprotected sex), and interviewed at 12 months postrelease (N = 339). Interviews included the Relational Health Indices-Community scale, a validated measure of women's relationships in community contexts, with subscales for empo…

Psychotic symptoms in borderline personality disorder: an update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to review the most recent literature on psychotic symptoms in borderline personality disorder (BPD). RECENT FINDINGS: Both auditory hallucinations and delusional ideation (especially paranoid delusions) are relatively common in individuals with BPD. It is still difficult to distinguish these and related phenomena in BPD from the corresponding experiences in psychotic disorders and schizophrenia, despite numerous attempts to do so. The terminology introduced to help with this effort has not been particularly useful. The presence of auditory hal

Investigating the Interaction Between Sleep Symptoms of Arousal and Acquired Capability in Predicting Suicidality.

Heightened arousal significantly interacts with acquired capability to predict suicidality. We explore this interaction with insomnia and nightmares independently of waking state arousal symptoms, and test predictions of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) and Escape Theory in relation to these sleep arousal symptoms. Findings from our e-survey (n = 540) supported the IPTS over models of Suicide as Escape. Sleep-specific measurements of arousal (insomnia and nightmares) showed no main effect, yet interacted with acquired capability to predict increased suicidality. The explained varianc

Stress-related clinical pain and mood in women with chronic pain: moderating effects of depression and positive mood induction.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain with comorbid depression is characterized by poor mood regulation and stress-related pain. PURPOSE: This study aims to compare depressed and non-depressed pain patients in mood and pain stress reactivity and recovery, and test whether a post-stress positive mood induction moderates pain recovery. METHODS: Women with fibromyalgia and/or osteoarthritis (N = 110) underwent interpersonal stress and were then randomly assigned by pain condition and depression status, assessed via the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale, to positive versus neutral mood indu

Predicting the outcome of antidepressants and psychotherapy for depression: a qualitative, systematic review.

As treatment outcome in depression varies widely, it is important to understand better the predictive value of particular patient characteristics. However, qualitative systematic reviews of the association between easily identifiable patient characteristics and outcome for commonly used treatment options have been unavailable. This article provides an overview of the consistency of findings on the association between sociodemographic factors and depression characteristics, on the one hand, and outcomes of pharmacotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and interpersonal/psychodynamic psychother

Family carers for older relatives: sources of satisfaction and related factors in Finland.

This study focuses on sources of satisfaction among family carers for older relatives and related factors in Finland. It is part of a major international project concerned with the coping of family carers in four countries. The results reported here are based on questionnaire data collected among 290 family carers from three Finnish towns. The questionnaire included the Carer's Assessment of Satisfaction Index (CASI) developed by Nolan and Grant (1992). The data were processed using SPSS statistical software. The results suggest that carers derived most satisfaction from seeing they could help

Exploring the effects of visible atopic eczema on willingness for direct and indirect contact.

BACKGROUND: Visible dermatological conditions are associated with stigma and social avoidance. Atopic eczema is a common, noncontagious skin disease that may affect visible areas such as the face and hands. Despite misconceptions regarding contagiousness, no previous research has systematically examined whether visible atopic eczema influences willingness for interpersonal contact. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the presence and severity of visible atopic eczema reduce willingness for direct and indirect contact, and to examine whether health anxiety, disgust propensity/sensitivity, COVID

Influence of the hiking tourscape on hikers' psychological restoration: the distinct mediating roles of place dependence and place identity.

BACKGROUND: Hiking restoration may be shaped not only by exposure to nature but also by the atmospheric, interpersonal, and activity-related features encountered along a route. This study examined how four dimensions of hiking tourscape, namely natural dimension, atmosphere dimension, hospitality culture, and experiential activities, were associated with psychological restoration. It further investigated whether place dependence and place identity provided distinct mediating pathways. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 452 hikers at two hiking destinations in Zunyi, China. T

Multiple marginalized identities: A qualitative exploration of intersectional perinatal experiences of birthing people of color with substance use disorder in Massachusetts.

INTRODUCTION: Racial and ethnic inequities persist in receipt of prenatal care, mental health services, and addiction treatment for pregnant and postpartum individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). Further qualitative work is needed to understand the intersectionality of racial and ethnic discrimination, stigma related to substance use, and gender bias on perinatal SUD care from the perspectives of affected individuals. METHODS: Peer interviewers conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with recently pregnant people of color with SUD in Massachusetts to explore the impact of inte

Caregiver burden in Parkinson's disease: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Providing informal care for a person with Parkinson's disease (PD) can be a demanding process affecting several dimensions of a caregiver's life and potentially causing caregiver burden. Despite the emerging literature on caregiver burden in people with PD, little is known about the inter-relationship between quantitative and qualitative findings. Filling this knowledge gap will provide a more holistic approach to develop and design innovations aiming at reducing or even preventing caregiver burden. This study aimed to characterize the determinants of caregiver burden among informa

Differences between homeless women and men before and after the transition from shelter to community living: A longitudinal analysis.

Social quality is the extent to which people are able to participate in social relationships under conditions which enhance their well-being, capacities and potential and enables them to shape their own circumstances and contribute to societal development. We assessed whether women in homeless shelters differed from men on social quality factors that constitute the quality of their daily life and whether factor scores changed at a different rate for women and men after shelter exit. Data were collected as part of a randomised controlled trial. In 18 shelters across the Netherlands, 183 partici
