Common Pediatric Pain Disorders and Their Clinical Associations.

BACKGROUND: Common childhood pain conditions (nonmigraine headache, migraine, recurrent abdominal pain, growing pains, low back pain) and persistent pains are often associated with each other and have significant implications in later life. Emerging evidence suggests additional associations between these pain conditions and restless legs syndrome, iron deficiency, anxiety, and depression. The aim of this cross-sectional study in pediatric twin individuals and their siblings was to investigate these associations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Surveys were sent to Australian twin families via the Aust

Effect of Maternal Nutritional Status and Mode of Delivery on Zinc and Iron Stores at Birth.

Zinc and iron deficiencies among infants aged under 6 months may be related with nutrient store at birth. This study aimed to investigate the association between zinc and iron stores at birth with maternal nutritional status and intakes during pregnancy. 117 pregnant women were enrolled at the end of second trimester and followed until delivery. Clinical data during pregnancy, including pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and at parturition were collected from medical record. Zinc and iron intakes were estimated from a food frequency questionnaire. Serum zinc and ferritin were determined in ma…

Risk Factors for Anemia and Micronutrient Deficiencies among Women of Reproductive Age-The Impact of the Wheat Flour Fortification Program in Uzbekistan.

Food fortification can be effective in reducing the prevalence of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies. This study assessed risk factors for-and the impact of the wheat flour program in Uzbekistan on-anemia, and iron and folate deficiency (FD) in non-pregnant women (NPW) of reproductive age. National data were analyzed for risk factors using multivariable regression. Additional iron intake from fortified flour was not associated with iron deficiency (ID) and did not result in a significantly different prevalence of anemia regardless of the levels, whereas women with additional folic acid inta

Combined measurement of ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, retinol binding protein, and C-reactive protein by an inexpensive, sensitive, and simple sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique.

The measurement of vitamin A (VA) and iron status is very important in the assessment of nutritional deficiencies. The objective of this research was to develop a sandwich ELISA technique for the simultaneous measurement of ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, retinol binding protein, and C-reactive protein (CRP) as indicators for VA and iron status. The inclusion of CRP as marker of infection allows for more accurate interpretation of VA and iron status. This is accomplished in a 30-microL serum or plasma sample using an ELISA with different capture and detection antibodies and different d

Brucella abortus siderophore 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) facilitates intracellular survival of the bacteria.

Siderophores are low molecular weight molecules that allow bacteria to acquire iron from host cell proteins. 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) is the only known siderophore produced by the intracellular pathogen Brucella abortus. Here its role in virulence was assessed by evaluating the ability of a mutant with a disruption of the entC gene to survive and replicate in vitro in murine and bovine cells and in vivo in resistant and susceptible murine hosts. It was hypothesized that DHBA is vital for bacterial virulence by its ability to chelate intracellular iron thereby preventing generation of a

A systematic review on micronutrient intake adequacy in adult minority populations residing in Europe: the need for action.

This systematic review evaluated micronutrient intake inadequacy of ten micronutrients for adult ethnic minority populations residing in Europe. Pubmed was searched for studies, related references were checked and experts consulted. Ten studies were identified and six were included in the final analysis representing Albanian, Roma, Sub-Saharan African, South Asian and African-Caribbean minority groups. The Estimated Average Requirement cut point was applied to estimate inadequate intake. With the exception of a sub-Saharan African study, of seven micronutrients analysed, inadequate intakes wer

Clinical Trial: Predicting Response to Iron Therapy in Patients With Active Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using Hepcidin and Functional Iron Indices: A Multicentre Randomised Trial.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and impairs quality of life. Hepcidin, the regulator of systemic iron homeostasis, may predict response to iron therapy; however, its utility in IBD remains unclear. This study evaluated whether baseline hepcidin predicts response to oral and intravenous (IV) iron in active IBD to guide personalised treatment. METHODS: Ninety adults with active IBD and iron deficiency (with or without anaemia) from two randomised trials received IV iron, oral ferrous fumarate (FF) or oral ferric maltol (FM). Response at 12

Assessment of Iron-Folate Adherence and Associated Factors Among Pregnant Women in Public Health Facilities of Durame Town, Southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy is a significant public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization recommended a daily oral dose of iron and folic acid supplements throughout pregnancy. Poor adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation arises in pregnant women associated with serious adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess iron-folate adherence and associated factors among pregnant women in public health facilities of Durame town, Southern Ethiopia, in 2022. METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional s

Intravenous Iron Replacement Improves Exercise Tolerance in COPD: A Single-Blind Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency affects exercise capacity because of the critical role iron plays in the optimal functioning of skeletal muscle metabolism. We hypothesized that intravenous iron may improve exercise tolerance, quality of life (QoL), and daily physical activity (DPA) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: This was a placebo-controlled, single-blind, parallel-group, randomized clinical trial. Iron deficiency was defined as a ferritin level<100ng/mL or a ferritin level between 100 and 299ng/mL with a transferrin saturation<20%, with or without mild

Improvement of Health-Related Quality of Life in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Receiving Routine Intravenous Iron Supplementation.

OBJECTIVES: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is very common in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). While health-related quality of life (HRQL) is a key outcome measure, no long-term studies have evaluated the effect of correction of IDA on HRQL in children with IBD. Our goal was to prospectively study changes in HRQL in iron-deficient children with IBD receiving routine iron supplementation with periodic intravenous iron sucrose (IVIS). METHODS: Thirty-eight children with IBD treated with infliximab participated. Hematology and inflammatory markers were assessed before each infliximab

Evaluation of the body iron status of native Canadians.

The serum ferritin concentration was measured in 1417 Indians and 310 Inuit aged 1 to 89 years. The subjects were initially selected to produce a representative sample of the entire native population, but the rate of nonresponse was high, and the results reported in this paper are representative only of the people studied. In males the median serum ferritin values increased during early life and tended to plateau after the age of 30 years. In females the median values rose during childhood, tended to plateau during adolescence, increased slightly during the reproductive period, then gradually r

Anaemia among the inhabitants of a rural area in northern Natal.

Haematological and parasitological investigations were carried out on apparently healthy subjects in a rural area of Natal. Anaemia was highly prevalent and of a moderate to severe degree (haemoglobin value less than 11,0 g/dl) in 42% of males and 52,5% of females. In 50% of subjects the anaemia was hypochromic and iron deficiency appeared to be the major contributing factor. However, failure to utilize iron, giving rise to hypochromia, was not excluded as a complicating factor. Subnormal serum vitamin B12 levels were found in some subjects, and this frequently coexisted with iron deficiency.

Iron- and riboflavin-dependent metabolism of a monamine in the rat in vivo.

n-Pentylamine enters into intermediary metabolism by the action of monoamine oxidase. [1-(14)C] Pentylamine injected into rats is rapidly converted to (14)CO(2). The rate of catabolism decreases progressively in the course of nutritional iron deficiency, reaching about 60 percent of control values in 3 weeks. Feeding with iron yields control levels within 6 days. The catabolism of amyl alcohol, which shares a common pathway with n-pentylamine by way of valeric aldehyde, is not significantly affected by the deficiency. The results demonstrate that the maintenance of normal monoamine oxidase act
