Assessment of simple movements reflects impairment in Huntington's disease.

Clinical rating, caudate atrophy, disturbed movement performance, neuropsychological testing, and age-related genetic disease load (CAG index) are tools that reflect impairment after onset of Huntington's disease (HD). Objectives were to compare scored HD symptoms, results of neuropsychological testing and of instrumental measurement of simple motion sequences, assess caudate atrophy and CAG index, and investigate their relation to each other in 131 subjects of various HD stages. Caudate atrophy and CAG index significantly increased in advanced HD patients. Motor test results significantly dif

Dyskinesia and eye tracking dysfunction in young schizophrenic patients - a pilot study.

The study dealt with the occurrence of dyskinetic symptoms and disturbances in eye movements in 15 young schizophrenic patients and the effect on these disturbances of anticholinergic antiparkinsonian medication administered during neuroleptic medication maintained at a stable level. The onset of illness had occurred at a younger age in the dyskinetic patients than in the others, and they had received larger amounts of high-dose neuroleptic medication, which, however, equalled an average daily dose of only 331 mg of chlorpromazine during an average of 2 1/2 years; thus, dyskinetic symptoms can

A female adult with Sandifer's syndrome and hiatal hernia misdiagnosed as epilepsy with focal seizures.

Sandifer's syndrome is a rare, probably underdiagnosed, and usually pediatric movement disorder associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Often, it is misdiagnosed as epilepsy or paroxysmal dyskinesia. We report the case of an adult female with Sandifer's syndrome initially diagnosed as focal epilepsy and treated inefficiently with anticonvulsants for two years.

"Locked-in" syndrome: report of seven cases.

Seven cases of the "locked-in" syndrome are described. This is a disorder in which a conscious, mute patient is completely paralysed apart from some form of eye movement, usually as a result of an infarct in the ventral pons. Such patients are often assumed to be in coma and as a result may be distressed by inappropriate conversation around the bedside.

Restoration of normal motor control in Parkinson's disease during REM sleep.

Although normal subjects do not move during REM sleep, patients with Parkinson's disease may experience REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). The characteristics of the abnormal REM sleep movements in RBD have, however, not been studied. We interviewed one hundred consecutive non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease and their bed partners using a structured questionnaire assessing the presence of RBD. They rated the quality of movements, voice and facial expression during RBD as being better, equal or worse than in awake ON levodopa condition. Night-time sleep and movements were video-moni

Sensory-motor circuit is a therapeutic target for dystonia musculorum mice, a model of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy 6.

Mutations in Dystonin (DST), which encodes cytoskeletal linker proteins, cause hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy 6 (HSAN-VI) in hu … ed abnormal movements. These findings demonstrate that the sensory-motor circuit is involved in the movement disorders in dt mice and that the sensory circuit is a therapeutic target for HSAN-VI.

Compromised reactive but intact proactive inhibitory motor control in Tourette disorder.

Tourette disorder (TD) is characterized by tics, which are sudden repetitive involuntary movements or vocalizations. Deficits in inhibitory control in TD patients remain inconclusive from the traditional method of estimating the ability to stop an impending action, which requires careful interpretation of a metric derived from race model. One possible explanation for these inconsistencies is that race model's assumptions of independent and stochastic rise of GO and STOP process to a fixed threshold are often violated, making the classical metric to assess inhibitory control less robust. Here,

A neural circuit state change underlying skilled movements.

In motor neuroscience, state changes are hypothesized to time-lock neural assemblies coordinating complex movements, but evidence for this remains slender. We tested whether a discrete change from more autonomous to coherent spiking underlies skilled movement by imaging cerebellar Purkinje neuron complex spikes in mice making targeted forelimb-reaches. As mice learned the task, millimeter-scale spatiotemporally coherent spiking emerged ipsilateral to the reaching forelimb, and consistent neural synchronization became predictive of kinematic stereotypy. Before reach onset, spiking switched from

Defective Human Motion Perception in Cervical Dystonia Correlates With Coexisting Tremor.

BACKGROUND: The ability to predict temporal outcome of body movement is abnormal in idiopathic dystonia and can be altered by cerebellar neuromodulation. Tremor in cervical dystonia might be associated with performance on motion perception tasks. METHODS: A total of 15 cervical dystonia patients with and 14 without tremor and 15 age-matched healthy participants estimated the termination of videos showing different movements (handwriting a sentence, ball reaching a target) after these were darkened at different time intervals. RESULTS: Cervical dystonia patients with tremor exhibited greater

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures treated with guided transcranial direct current stimulation: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are paroxysms of either altered subjective or objective manifestations that may mimic epileptic seizures (ES), without abnormal neuronal epileptiform activity. In this report, we present the case of a 39-year-old woman with PNES and functional movement disorders, who was successfully treated with neuro-guided transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). METHODS: We used a PET-guided tDCS approach, as a hypometabolism of the frontal region was revealed by FDG TEP scan. TDCs was performed 5 days/week, 2 times/day, during 3 weeks. All cl…

Detection of Nocturnal Scratching Movements in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis Using Accelerometers and Recurrent Neural Networks.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting both children and adults and is associated with pruritus. A method for objectively quantifying nocturnal scratching events could aid in the development of therapies for atopic dermatitis and other pruritic disorders. High-resolution wrist actigraphy (three-dimensional accelerometer sensors sampled at 20 Hz) is a noninvasive method to record movement. This paper presents an algorithm to detect nocturnal scratching events based on actigraphy data. The twofold process consists of segmenting the data into "no motion," "single han

Knowing what the brain is seeing in three dimensions: A novel, noninvasive, sensitive, accurate, and low-noise technique for measuring ocular torsion.

Torsional eye movements are rotations of the eye around the line of sight. Measuring torsion is essential to understanding how the brain controls eye position and how it creates a veridical perception of object orientation in three dimensions. Torsion is also important for diagnosis of many vestibular, neurological, and ophthalmological disorders. Currently, there are multiple devices and methods that produce reliable measurements of horizontal and vertical eye movements. Measuring torsion, however, noninvasively and reliably has been a longstanding challenge, with previous methods lacking rea

Biomechanical strain of goldsmiths.

The work of the goldsmiths consists in the manufacture of jewelry. The piece, be it an earring, bracelet or necklace, is hand-assembled. This task requires precision, skill, kindness and patience. In this work, we make use of tools such as cuticle clippers and rounded tip, beads or precious stones and also pieces of metal. This type of activity requires a biomechanical stress of hands and wrists. In order to quantify the biomechanical stress, we performed a case study to measure the movements performed by an assembly of pieces of jewelry. As method for research, filming was done during assembl

[Analysis of sagittal condyle inclination in subjects with temporomandibular disorders].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Disturbances of mandibular border movements is considered to be one of the major signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible association between disturbances of mandibular border movements and the presence of symptoms of TMD in the young. METHODS: This study included two groups of volunteers between 18 and 26 years of age. The study group included 30 examineers with signs (symptoms) of TMD, and the control group also included 30 persons without any signs (symptoms) of TMD. The presence of TMD was confirmed according to the

Bilateral pallidal deep brain stimulation in primary Meige syndrome.

Primary Meige syndrome is an idiopathic movement disorder that manifests as craniofacial and often cervical dystonias. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) has emerged as a powerful surgical option in the treatment of primary generalized or segmental dystonia. However, the experience with GPi-DBS in Meige syndrome is limited. We followed 5 patients with disabling Meige syndrome treated by bilateral GPi-DBS for 49 ± 43.7 (mean ± SD) months. All patients were assessed before surgery and at the last follow-up after surgery using the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating
