Fasciculation and focal loss of nerve accommodation in peripheral neuropathies.

Fasciculation of muscle and repetitive response of single motor units to brief electric stimuli in diffuse demyelinative and focal (compression) neuropathies are associated with localised loss of accommodation of motor nerve fibres. The pathogenesis of spontaneous and triggered repetitive firing of neurones is discussed and it is proposed that the discrete sites of abnormally low accommodation may be in regenerating (sprouting) neurones. An improved rapid method for measuring single fibre accommodation may be used to identify regenerating neurones.

Neurological complications of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis.

Forty four cases of the neurological complications of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) seen in India during 1981 epidemic are reported. The disease predominantly affected adult males. The preceding attack of AHC, a latent period, prodromal symptoms of fever, myalgia and root pains followed by acute onset of lower motor neurone paralysis of limbs and/or cranial nerves formed the classical picture of neurological involvement. The recovery was poor and nearly half of the patients remained severely handicapped. Electrophysiological studies showed early appearance of widespread fibrillations

A study on the neurotoxicity of broxyquinoline and brobenzoxaldine combination in therapeutic doses.

The neurotoxicity of a combination of broxyquinoline and brobenzoxaldine (Intestopan Forte, containing 500 mg and 100 mg of the drugs respectively per capsule) was investigated by prospective clinical and electrophysiological studies in patients and volunteer subjects given the drugs in therapeutic doses (two capsules three times a day for 5 days). Of 16 patients with intestinal amoebiasis given the drugs (study A), 13 (81.25%) were cured. Adverse effects were mild and did not affect treatment. No neurological adverse effect was reported. Neurological examinations revealed no abnormality in an

[Motor nerve conduction velocity in children: normal values and application to a few pathologic cases].

Nerve conduction velocity (NCV), according to age, was studied in normal children. Motor distal ulnar NCV (in 63 children, from 1 day to 4 years of age), motor distal tibial NCV (in 93 children, from birth to 15 years of age), proprioceptive tibial NCV (in 59 children, from birth to 5 years of age) and proximal CV (in 133 children from birth to 15 years of age), as well as VIIth superior branch CV (in 67 children) and XIIth CV (in 56 children) from birth to 3 years of age, were measured. These measurements showed that NCV changes were similar; NCV was 45-50% of the adult value during the first

Conduction studies along the accessory nerve and follow-up of patients with trapezius palsy.

The accessory nerve was stimulated at the posterior triangle of the neck and responses were evoked simultaneously from the upper, middle and lower part of the trapezius muscle. Sixteen patients were investigated, 10 with trapezius palsy following surgical procedures at the posterior cervical triangle, three with a history suggestive of neuralgic amyotrophy and three of unknown origin. On the unaffected side the latency increases 0.16 ms per 10 mm increase in conduction distance corresponding to a conduction velocity of 63 m/s. Evidence is presented that the upper, middle and lower part of the

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

A review is presented of the clinical features of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, as analysed from 304 reported instances. The sex-ratio of the condition is equal, the peak-age at onset is between 40 and 60 yrs, and left-side involvement predominates in females. The clinical features are detailed in 18 specific items. In a review of the aetiology it is argued that the so-called "idiopathic" type of IXth nerve neuralgia (which, upon careful analysis, may still rest upon either an obscure tumor or infection or elongated styloid process) should be primarily attributed to vascular elongation and loopi

Effects of aldose reductase inhibitor treatment in diabetic polyneuropathy - a clinical and neurophysiological study.

The efficacy of treatment with an aldose reductase inhibitor (1,3-dioxo-1 H-benz-de-isoquinoline-2(3H)-acetic acid, AY-22,284, Alrestatin) on peripheral nerve function in diabetic polyneuropathy was assessed. Thirty patients with long-standing diabetes and slight to moderate neuropathy participated in the double-blind placebo trial. Clinical examination, sensory threshold determinations for vibratory, tactile and thermal stimuli, conduction velocity measurements and studies of automatic function were performed to evaluate the treatment. Significant differences favouring Alrestatin over placebo

The anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome.

The anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome, first described in 1968 by Marinacci, is characterized by a compression of the deep peroneal nerve under the inferior extensor retinaculum. The patients complaint of pains on the dorsum of the foot, especially at night. Clinically result sensory deficits in the involved area between the first and second toes as well as paresis and atrophy of the extensor digitorum brevis. The distal latency of the deep peroneal nerve is increased, the EMG shows active and chronic denervation of the extensor digitorum brevis. In cases with partial anterior tarsal tunnel synd

Binding of tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin to sodium channels.

A useful first step in any chemical characterization of the sodium channels in nerve membrane would clearly be the identification of some measurable property of the channel that does not depend on the intactness of the tissue. To this end, tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin, which bind specifically to sodium channels, have been triated and their binding to rabbit, lobster and garfish non-lyelinated nerve fibres examined. In each case, a component of the binding curve was found that saturated at concentrations of a few nanomolar. In addition, non-specific binding, indicated by a linear dependence of th

Spiking Neural Networks for Temporal Processing: Status Quo and Future Prospects.

Temporal processing is fundamental for biological and artificial intelligence systems, as it enables the comprehension of dynamic environments and facilitates timely responses. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are well-suited for efficient temporal processing owing to their rich neuronal dynamics and event-driven computation. Given the recent surge in the development of SNNs, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive evaluation of their temporal processing capabilities. In this article, we first conduct an in-depth assessment of commonly used neuromorphic benchmarks, revealing critical limitat

Transforming Fundus Photography for Deep Learning-Based Anemia Screening.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a noninvasive anemia screening method using fundus photographs analyzed by deep learning models, by transforming circular fundus photographs into square images suitable for convolutional neural network analysis. Methods: A total of 39,036 fundus images and clinical data collected from 2011 to 2023 were used. Eligible patients had clearly visible macula and optic discs and corresponding hemoglobin measurements. Three image preprocessing methods were applied-untransformed, stretching, and remapping. Results: Among preprocessing meth
