The following are the clinical and autopsy findings in a 63-year-old woman with myelopathy associated with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type I (HTLV-I). HTLV-I antibody was positive in both the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In the lower thoracic region, demyelination and the loss of axons were accompanied by a proliferation of astrocytes, and gliosis was found in the lateral columns. Perivascular and parenchymal infiltrations of macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells were also observed, but neither viral inclusion bodies nor atypical lymphocytes were found.

From November 1987 to October 1988, seventy-seven cases diagnosed as dengue fever and confirmed by viral culture or serological examination in the Pediatric Department of Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital were studied. The ocular pathology in a new patient with mosaic trisomy 9 comprised major anomalies and contrasted sharply with the findings in a previous case reported by us. The ocular changes in this case were, in essence, indistinguishable from those encountered in the most severe form of trisomy 13. Similarities to trisomy 18 and 21 were further evidence of the overlap of ocular findings in autosomal trisomies. There is increasing evidence that most, if not all, chromosomes have some role in regulating ocular embryogenesis.

The anatomy and function of the temporomandibular joint are complex, and our understanding about how the retrocondylar tissues change when the condyle translates anteriorly has been incomplete. During a period of more than 30 years, 34 patients suffering from the Adamantiades-Behçet disease have been examined and followed between at least one year till 16 years. Different treatments have been administered and particularly the immunodepressors with good results, but about all patients became drug-dependents. Long-term observations concerning the ocular and general evolution of the disease are presented and discussed. Some patients have been operated for a cataract without any inconvenience.

Inclusion body myositis (IBM) was suspected on light microscopic grounds in 48 of 170 consecutive patients with inflammatory myopathies. One or more vacuoles containing membranous material, groups of atrophic fibres, and an autoaggressive endomysial inflammatory exudate occurred in 100, 96 and 92% of the muscle specimens. All three of these features were present in 88% of the specimens. Electron microscopy confirmed the presence of filamentous inclusions in 40 of 43 patients. We have retrospectively analyzed 9 cases of nocardiosis that were studied in our hospital over the past 10 years. 66% of the patients had an associated disease and half of them were on steroid treatment. The clinical manifestations of the infection were pulmonary and cutaneous and in 44% of cases, it disseminated to the central nervous system. CT scans were obtained in 17 patients who had biopsy-proved chronic active hepatitis in order to evaluate deteriorating liver function and clinical status. The pattern of schistosomiasis of the prostate and seminal vesicles in Zambia is presented. The results were based on histological examination and digestion of tissue obtained from 50 cadavers. Compared to the bladder (62%) and seminal vesicles (58%), the infestation was least common (50%) in the prostate. The infection was due to Schistosoma haematobium alone in all organs. The most significant finding was the histological inactivity secondary to this parasitic infection. It is suggested that schistosomiasis of these organs is unlikely to be causally related to male infertility in Zambia.

A 38-year-old man developed palpitations after swallowing. Intracardiac recordings and esophageal manometry were obtained during episodes of swallowing-induced tachycardia. These studies demonstrated that the site of origin of the tachycardia was the high right atrium and that the onset of the tachycardia occurred prior to the arrival of the peristaltic wave in the esophagus. Renal function was studied in 40 workers chronically exposed to lead at a smelter.
