Iatrogenic non-coronary leaflet perforation as a complication after robotic mitral valve repair.

Iatrogenic aortic regurgitation secondary to leaflet injury is a rare complication of mitral valve surgery. For the first time, we report a patient who had progressive aortic regurgitation due to non-coronary leaflet perforation after robotic mitral valve repair and required aortic valve repair 18 months after this initial surgery. As in our case, aortic regurgitation after mitral valve surgery may remain undiagnosed on intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography or undetected until the patient's discharge due to gradual enlargement of very small perforations over the postoperative course.

A scoping review of gaze and eye tracking-based control methods for assistive robotic arms.

Background: Assistive Robotic Arms are designed to assist physically disabled people with daily activities. Existing joysticks and head controls are not applicable for severely disabled people such as people with Locked-in Syndrome. Therefore, eye tracking control is part of ongoing research. The related literature spans many disciplines, creating a heterogeneous field that makes it difficult to gain an overview. Objectives: This work focuses on ARAs that are controlled by gaze and eye movements. By answering the research questions, this paper provides details on the design of the systems, a c

Built On-orbit Robotically assembled Gigatruss (BORG): A mixed assembly architecture trade study.

This paper explores a mixed assembly architecture trade study for a Built On-orbit Robotically assembled Gigatruss (BORG). Robotic in-space assembly (ISA) and servicing is a crucial field to expand endeavors in space. Currently, large structures in space are commonly only deployable and must be efficiently folded and packed into a launch vehicle (LV) and then deployed perfectly for operational status to be achieved. To actualize being able to build increasingly large structures in space, this scheme becomes less feasible, being constrained by LV volume and mass requirements. ISA allows the use

Customized Series Elastic Actuator for a Safe and Compliant Human-Robot Interaction: Design and Characterization.

When it comes to robotic-mediated rehabilitation it is mandatory to design a system that guarantees a safe and compliant human-machine interaction. Dealing with rehabilitative upper limb exoskeletons, Series Elastic Actuators offer a potential solution for this purpose. This work proposes four different solutions for SEAs' spring design. After an analysis on the mechanical requirements, four different solutions are explored and presented. The performances of the proposed highly integrated SEAs are compared. An initial static characterization provided insights on the linearity and repeatability

Human arm endpoint-impedance in rhythmic human-robot interaction exhibits cyclic variations.

Estimating the human endpoint-impedance interacting with a physical environment provides insights into goal-directed human movements during physical interactions. This work examined the endpoint-impedance of the upper limb during a hybrid ball-bouncing task with simulated haptic feedback while participants manipulated an admittance-controlled robot. Two experiments implemented a force-perturbation method to estimate the endpoint parameters of 31 participants. Experimental conditions of the ball-bouncing task were simulated in a digital environment. One experiment studied the influence of the t

Robotic-assisted surgery for mid and low rectal cancer: a long but safe learning curve.

The number of robotic-assisted procedures for rectal cancer is rising. The risk of this procedure when performed by surgeon with limited robotic experience is unknown and the precise duration of the learning curve debated. We, therefore, aimed to analyze the learning curve and its related safety in a single center before the development of mentoring programs. We prospectively recorded all robotic procedures performed for colorectal cancer between 2015 and 2020 by a single surgeon. Operative times for partial and total proctectomy were analyzed. The learning curve was defined by comparison with

Robotic pyeloplasty learning curve for a pediatric surgeon without previous laparoscopic pyeloplasty experience.

Robotic pyeloplasty has become a technique of choice for pyelo-ureteral junction syndrome treatment in children. Less invasive than open surgery, robotic pyeloplasty also has a lower learning curve than laparoscopic pyeloplasty. This is how a new generation of surgeons without previous laparoscopic pyeloplasty experience has begun training in robotics. To assess the robotic assisted pyeloplasty learning curve for a pediatric surgeon only trained in open pyeloplasty, and to investigate if that mode of practice is safe and effective. Data were collected from all children operated on for pyelo-ur…

Technical aspects of a new approach to intraoperative pelvic neuromonitoring during robotic rectal surgery.

It has been found that rectal surgery still leads to high rates of postoperative urinary, fecal, or sexual dysfunction, which is why nerve-sparing surgery has gained increasing importance. To improve functional outcomes, techniques to preserve pelvic autonomic nerves by identifying anatomic landmarks and implementing intraoperative neuromonitoring methods have been investigated. The objective of this study was to transfer a new approach to intraoperative pelvic neuromonitoring based on bioimpedance measurement to a clinical setting. Thirty patients (16 male, 14 female) involved in a prospectiv

Advances in robotic lung transplantation: development and validation of a new surgical technique in animal models.

The objective of this study was to describe a novel minimally invasive robotic video-assisted approach for lung transplantation, utilizing a minimally invasive technique with a subxiphoid incision, in an animal experimentation model. Two left robotic-assisted single lung transplants were performed in sheep using a robotic surgical system. A subxiphoid incision was made, and robotic ports were inserted into the thoracic cavity for dissection and anastomoses of the bronchus, artery, and pulmonary veins. The integrity of anastomoses was evaluated, and procedural details were recorded. Both animal

The robotic future of minimally invasive cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancies.

Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) has been increasingly utilized for peritoneal surface malignancies. This has been commonly utilized for a variety of neoplasms, but, especially mucinous neoplasms of the appendix, ovarian cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer and mesothelioma. Traditionally, CRS/HIPEC has been performed as an open, extensive operation associated with prolonged hospitalization. However, when the peritoneal carcinomatosis index (PCI) is small (<10), minimally invasive approaches can be considered. Such less invasive approaches m

Multi-mode information fusion navigation system for robot-assisted vascular interventional surgery.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive vascular intervention (MIVI) is a powerful technique for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) and aortic dissection (AD). Navigation of traditional MIVI surgery mainly relies only on 2D digital subtraction angiography (DSA) images, which is hard to observe the 3D morphology of blood vessels and position the interventional instruments. The multi-mode information fusion navigation system (MIFNS) proposed in this paper combines preoperative CT images and intraoperative DSA images together t
