Mast cells in melanocytic skin lesions. An immunohistochemical and quantitative study.

A large body of research establishes the efficacy of musical intervention in many aspects of physical, cognitive, communication, social, and emotional rehabilitation. However, the underlying neural mechanisms for musical therapy remain elusive. This study aimed to investigate the potential neural correlates of musical therapy, focusing on the changes in the topology of emotion brain network. To this end, a Bayesian statistical approach and a cross-over experimental design were employed together with two resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) as controls. MEG recordings of 30 healthy subjec

Mental health and health service use among post-national service veterans: results from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey of England.

BACKGROUND: There is concern surrounding the psychological health and uptake of treatment services among veterans of the UK Armed Forces. METHOD: Data from a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample were used to compare health outcomes and treatment seeking among 257 post-national service veterans aged 16-64 years and 504 age and sex frequency-matched non-veterans living in the community in England. Early leavers (<4 years service) were compared with longer serving veterans. RESULTS: Male veterans reported more childhood adversity and were more likely to have experienced a major tra

Characterization of a family with rare deletions in CNTNAP5 and DOCK4 suggests novel risk loci for autism and dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by social, communication, and behavioral deficits and complex genetic etiology. A recent study of 517 ASD families implicated DOCK4 by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association and a microdeletion in an affected sibling pair. METHODS: The DOCK4 microdeletion on 7q31.1 was further characterized in this family using QuantiSNP analysis of 1M SNP array data and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Extended family members were tested by polymerase chain reaction amplification of junction fragments. DOCK4 dosage was m

A case series of children with apparent mercury toxic encephalopathies manifesting with clinical symptoms of regressive autistic disorders.

Impairments in social relatedness and communication, repetitive behaviors, and stereotypic abnormal movement patterns characterize autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). It is clear that while genetic factors are important to the pathogenesis of ASDs, mercury exposure can induce immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits defining or associated with ASDs. The Institutional Review Board of the Institute for Chronic Illnesses (Office for Human Research Protections, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, IRB number IRB00005375) approved the present study.

Predictors of heartburn during sleep in a large prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux, which may result in nocturnal heartburn, has been demonstrated to be associated with a more severe form of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The aim of this study was to determine the clinical predictors of heartburn during sleep in a large prospective cohort study. METHODS: Study subjects were members of the parent cohorts from which the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) recruited participants. SHHS is a multicenter, longitudinal, cohort study of the cardiovascular consequences of sleep-disordered breathing. As part of the recruitme

[Sensory-psychomotor evaluation in Autism: A new tool for functional diagnosis].

INTRODUCTION: Psychomotor impairments in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have frequently been described in scientific literature. Such deficits impact upon the development of social motor function and interfere with the ability to adjust to everyday life. The inclusion of sensory-motor signs in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) confirms their importance in the diagnosis of ASD. Previous literature has shown the presence precocity of these signs, sometimes before the alteration of the social communication. To our knowledge, there are no existing clinical tools to

Examining the Roles of Technology Across the Health Care Journey for Individuals With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in daily life, their roles in mental health care have expanded and diversified. Digital tools are being explored as interventions for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) across the care continuum, including symptom recognition, access to care, treatment, and self-management. However, there is limited empirical understanding of how individuals living with OCD use digital technologies in situ to navigate their health care journeys or how they envision technology shaping future models of care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore

Discrete non-calcified plaque is associated with increased major adverse cardiovascular events in a high cardiovascular risk population with low coronary artery calcium scores (0-100).

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores of 0-100 and non-calcified plaque (NCP) on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) have traditionally been considered low risk for obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) and future adverse cardiovascular events (CVEs). In regions with high pre-test probability for CAD and negative social determinants of health, rates of adverse CVEs remain higher than in lower-risk populations. METHODS: A retrospective review from January 2019 to May 2022 of 1050 symptomatic patients without known CAD and a CAC score of 0-100 identified

Exploring Care and Recovery for Individuals With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Most people experience trauma at some point in their lives. The sources of trauma can include accidents, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, combat, torture, or the death of a loved one. Experiencing or witnessing any of these, or other terrifying events, may make one susceptible to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a trauma- and stressor-related mental health condition. The common symptoms and consequences of PTSD include intrusive and distressing thoughts, memories, or flashbacks related to the traumatic event; avoidance of situations, people, or activities that re

Nonverbal Cognitive Skills in Children With Aicardi Goutières Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Aicardi Goutières syndrome (AGS) is type I interferonopathy characterized by severe neurologic impairment. Although many children with AGS demonstrate motor and expressive language deficits, the magnitude of receptive language impairment is uncharacterized. We sought to characterize cognitive function in AGS-affected children using assessment tools with reduced dependence on motor abilities and compare cognitive testing outcomes with overall severity and parental assessment of adaptive behavior. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study. Children were recruited

Telehealth exercise for continence after gynaecological cancer treatment (TELE-CONNECT): a protocol for a co-designed pragmatic randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is the most prevalent pelvic floor disorder following treatment for gynaecological cancer with a distressing impact on quality-of-life in survivors. Physiotherapist-supervised pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training is recommended as the first-line intervention for UI in community-dwelling women. However, it is not known if this intervention is effective in women following treatment for gynaecological cancer, nor whether PFM training can be delivered entirely remotely. The primary aim of this study is to investigate if a telehealth-delivered PFM training progra

Pre-post, mixed-methods feasibility study of the WorkingWell mobile support tool for individuals with serious mental illness in the USA: a pilot study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Successful competitive employment has been found to be related to enhanced self-esteem, higher quality of life and reduced mental health service use for individuals living with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. The effectiveness of the individual placement and support model has been demonstrated in multiple randomised controlled trials in many countries. The management of stress, depression and anxiety in the workplace may be effectively enhanced through digital mental health interventions. The WorkingWell mobile suppo

Protocol for a multi-centre, definitive randomised controlled trial of the effectiveness of Individual Placement and Support for employment support among people with alcohol and drug dependence.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment is highly prevalent in populations with alcohol and drug dependence and the employment support offered in addiction-treatment programmes is ineffective. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based intervention for competitive employment. IPS has been extensively studied in severe mental illness and physical disabilities, but there have been no formal randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in alcohol and drug dependence. The Individual Placement and Support for Alcohol and Drug Dependence (IPS-AD) study should determine whether IPS for patients with alcohol

Substance Use Patterns and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: A Retrospective Study of Inpatients at a Community Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is one of the chronic mental illnesses, characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, and cognitive decline. It frequently leads to a lifetime of impairment and disability that span the entire lifespan of the patients. Several epidemiologic studies have shown that schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) contribute significantly to years lived with disability. Additionally, substance use disorders have been reported to co-occur commonly among patients with SSD (a comorbidity also known as dual diagnosis), a

Care Integration for Hepatitis C Virus Treatment Through Facilitated Telemedicine Within Opioid Treatment Programs: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine has the potential to remove geographic and temporal obstacles to health care access. Whether and how telemedicine can increase health care access for underserved populations remains an open question. To address this issue, we integrated facilitated telemedicine encounters for the management of hepatitis C virus (HCV), a highly prevalent condition among people with opioid use disorder (OUD), into opioid treatment programs (OTPs). In New York State, OTPs are methadone-dispensing centers that provide patient-centered, evidence-based treatment for OUD. We investigated the
