Vicarious defeat stress (VDS) is not a simple substitute for chronic social defeat stress (CSDS): a comparative study on behavioral and molecular mechanisms in both stress-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors.

Social stress is a fundamental environmental factor driving the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) and vicarious defeat stress (VDS) are two widely used social stress paradigms, with VDS initially proposed as an alternative to CSDS. The present study integrated behavioral phenotypes, hippocampal proteomics, synaptic morphology, energy metabolism, neurotransmitter and tryptophan-kynurenine (TRP-KYN) metabolism, and inflammatory indicators to directly compare responses in adult male mice subjected to CSDS and VDS. Both CSDS and VDS mice showed sign

Comprehensive social determinants of health and brain health in midlife.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly recognized as important drivers of cognitive outcomes. However, most existing evidence focuses on individual SDOH components and older populations. OBJECTIVES: To develop a comprehensive SDOH index and examine its association with subsequent changes in cognitive function and structural brain measures in midlife. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study with repeated measures of cognition and brain imaging. SETTING: Community-based cohort from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. PARTICIPANTS: A total

Protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial of the Pharmacy Homeless Outreach Engagement Non-medical and Independent Prescriber (PHOENIx) intervention for people facing severe and multiple disadvantages.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD: homelessness, substance use and criminal offending) have multiple intersecting unmet health and social care needs and high mortality rates, often due to street-drug overdose. Pilot randomised controlled trials (RCTs) suggest an integrated, holistic, collaborative outreach intervention (Pharmacy Homeless Outreach Engagement Non-medical Independent Prescribing Rx (PHOENIx)) involving generalist-trained pharmacists, nurses or General Practitioners accompanied by staff from third sector homeless organisations may improve outc

"Have Scientists Done Enough?" Community Perspectives on Gene Drive-Modified Mosquitoes for Malaria Control in Northern Uganda: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Gene-drive modified mosquitoes (GDMMs) offer a novel strategy for malaria control by genetically altering mosquito populations to reduce transmission. We assessed public awareness, attitudes, and factors influencing acceptance of GDMMs in Northern Uganda. METHODS: This mixed-methods study included both quantitative and qualitative components. In the quantitative survey, 301 participants were recruited through multistage stratified sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM) and Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Attitudes

Identifying early intervention opportunities for illicit stimulant use: A cross-sectional study of factors associated with illicit stimulant use among young people accessing integrated youth services in British Columbia, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Illicit stimulant (cocaine and/or amphetamine) use among young people aged 12-24 is a public health priority given that substance use initiation tends to peak in this developmental period and significant associated immediate and long-term harms are associated with its use. Young people using stimulants must be engaged in services as early as possible to reduce these harms. To inform early intervention opportunities, this study aimed to identify the risk/protective factors associated with illicit stimulant use among young people. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on r

Identification of Behavior Change Techniques From Successful Web-Based Interventions Targeting Alcohol Consumption, Binge Eating, and Gambling: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Web-based interventions are thought to overcome barriers to treatment, such as accessibility and geographical location, which can undermine the effectiveness of traditional face-to-face interventions. Owing to these features, researchers are increasingly testing the efficacy of web-based interventions as ways to reduce alcohol misuse, binge eating, and gambling. However, many web-based interventions have poorly defined mechanisms of action; therefore, it is often uncertain how they propose to bring about behavior change. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to identify effective

Problems maintaining collaborative approaches with excluded populations in a randomised control trial: lessons learned implementing Housing First in France.

BACKGROUND: In 2006, a local collective combating homelessness set up an 'experimental squat' in an abandoned building in Marseille, France's second largest city. They envisioned the squat as an alternative to conventional health and social services for individuals experiencing long-term homelessness and severe psychiatric disorders. Building on what they learned from the squat, some then joined a larger coalition that succeeded in convincing national government decision-makers to develop a scientific, intervention-based programme based on the Housing First model. This article analyses the pol

Indicators predicting use of mental health services in Piedmont, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1978 Italian reform, an integrated network of community mental health services has been introduced. With few exceptions, research on determinants of mental health service use at the district level has focused on inpatient activities and social deprivation indicators. The European Psychiatric Care Assessment Team (EPCAT) standardized methodology allows for an evidence-based comparison of mental health systems between geographical areas. AIMS: To compare service provision and utilization between local catchment areas; to explore quantitative relationships between residenti

Prevention norms across socio-ecological levels and their relationship to PrEP-intention among men who have sex with men: a structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: Social norms around PrEP act as both barriers to and stimulants of the use of PrEP across a wide range of target populations, yet remain relatively understudied. To stimulate theoretical innovation and provide a quantitative check for qualitative findings, we integrate norm types from the Behavioral Models (BM) and the Social Norms Approach (SNA) into the socio-ecological model (SEM) and analyze their relationship with PrEP-intention. We include attitude and role belief at the individual level, injunctive norms at the interpersonal level and descriptive norms and self-comparison to

Envisioning family, but where? Parenthood-related geographic preferences among childless LGB and heterosexual adults in Ecuador.

INTRODUCTION: Research on parenthood aspirations among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults has expanded, yet little is known about the geographic contexts in which parenthood is envisioned, particularly in the Global South. This question has practical relevance because unequal legal recognition, social acceptance, economic opportunity, and personal safety may make the exercise of family formation rights partly contingent on mobility. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional convergent mixed-methods survey, we examined parenthood-related geographic preferences among 184 childless cisgender adults

Determinants Shaping Healthcare Experiences Among Vulnerable Populations in Hong Kong: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BackgroundIn many urban Asian cities, healthcare experiences are situated at the intersection of infrastructure-dictated living, multilingual and aging populations, and pluralistic medical practices. In Hong Kong, these dynamics are intensified by socioeconomic inequality and long wait times for subsidized care within the public-private healthcare system. Few qualitative studies have examined how social, environmental, and healthcare system factors shape the experiences of vulnerable populations in this context against a multilevel framework. The study explored these determinants and their imp

Body Image, Disordered Eating, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport Risk in Female Athletes: Associations Across Psychological and Behavioral Factors.

BACKGROUND: Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is traditionally conceptualized as a physiological consequence of low energy availability, yet emerging evidence implicates psychological and behavioral mechanisms in its development. This study examined the associations among body image, disordered eating, social physique anxiety, and female health knowledge to clarify psychosocial antecedents of REDs risk in female athletes. HYPOTHESIS: Negative body image will be associated with REDs risk and disordered eating. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS

The Impact of Dementia Caregiving on the Health of the Spousal Caregiver.

Dementia caregiving represents a major public health challenge, with spousal caregivers assuming the greatest burden. Spouses, themselves typically older adults, provide high intensity, long-term, and largely unpaid care across all stages of cognitive decline. Despite their central role in dementia care, the health consequences experienced by spousal caregivers remain insufficiently characterized in the literature and inadequately addressed in clinical and public health practice. This structured narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the multidimensional impact of dementia caregiving

Visualizing stigma and HIV service engagement: a participatory approach using causal loop diagrams.

BACKGROUND: HIV stigma continues to undermine efforts to reduce HIV incidence and improve care outcomes in the United States, particularly among communities disproportionately impacted by the epidemic. While stigma is a known barrier to care, how it operates across HIV prevention, testing, and treatment remains difficult to characterize within complex service systems. This study employed a participatory systems science approach to map these dynamics across the HIV care continuum. METHODS: We conducted three virtual group model building sessions (10-15 participants per session) with stakeholde

Financial Toxicity and Treatment Satisfaction Among Lebanese Patients With Cancer: Indirect Associations Involving Psychological Distress.

PURPOSE: Lebanon's ongoing economic collapse has severely disrupted access to cancer care and increased out-of-pocket financial burden for patients. Financial toxicity and psychological distress are recognized barriers to treatment experience and adherence, yet little is known about how these factors interact within collapsing health systems. This study assessed whether psychological distress is indirectly associated between financial toxicity and treatment satisfaction among Lebanese adults with cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 308 adult patients with cancer rece

The architecture of quality of life after stroke: a network comparison of mild-to-moderate versus severe functional impairment.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after stroke is multidimensional, yet conventional analyses often overlook the complex interactions among its domains and how these might differ by functional status. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to model and compare the network architecture of HRQoL between stroke survivors with mild-to-moderate versus severe functional dependence. METHODS: In this multi-center cross-sectional study, 451 inpatients were assessed using the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life (SS-QOL) scale across 12 domains. Participants were stratified into a Mild-Moderate group

Chronic social defeat stress accelerates lung cancer progression and induces hippocampal metabolic dysregulation in a duration-optimized comorbid model.

Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) is a commonly used mouse model of depression, yet lung cancer - CSDS combined model remains underexplored. Research on the duration of CSDS to induce persistent depressive phenotypes is also relatively limited and calls for further study. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between stress duration and depressive severity, and to clarify the neurobiological links between tumor burden and depression-like behaviors. A combined lung cancer - CSDS mouse model was established by integrating stress exposure and Lewis lung carcinoma implantation. Depressiv

Social Determinants of Health and Polygenic Susceptibility in Nonsyndromic Ascending Aortic Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Nonsyndromic ascending aortic aneurysm (AsAA) may remain clinically silent until dissection or rupture. The contributions of multidomain social determinants of health (SDOH) and polygenic susceptibility to AsAA risk are not well defined. METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis of 124 180 participants in the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program, 14 SDOH measures were summarized as a standardized composite score, and an ascending aortic diameter polygenic risk score (PRS; polygenic score, 004927) was standardized within ancestry strata. Synthesis of qualitative evidence on community experiences and perceptions of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria and factors influencing prevention and healthcare-seeking behaviours in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge, and Plasmodium knowlesi malaria has become the predominant cause of malaria in Malaysia. Despite progress in eliminating nonzoonotic malaria species, Malaysia continues to face challenges in controlling P. knowlesi. While epidemiological and vector control studies are reported, less is known about the community-level sociocultural dynamics influencing prevention behaviours. Therefore, this qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) aims to consolidate existing evidence on community experiences and perceptions related to P. knowlesi m
