Two new methods for the determination of active components in the preparations Gardan P (propyphenazone + noramidopyrine) and Pabialgin P (propyphenazone + allobarbital) have been elaborated. The first one is a direct spectrophotometric method based on measurements of absorption at two wave lengths; at lambda = 218 and 270 nm for Pabialgin P, and at lambda = 232 and 260 nm for Gardan P. Studies performed in the last decade have shown the importance of zinc in human physiology particularly in cell mediated immunity. Blood zinc values were assayed with the atomic absorption method using a Perkin/Elmer 2.380 spectrophotometer in 35 Down's syndrome subjects (DS) (16 boys and 19 girls aged 6 months 20 years) and in normal subjects in good health. A new method of quantifying cerebral blood flow which allows repeated cotside measurements is described. 31 observations were made on nine ill, mostly very preterm, infants. Cerebral blood flow was usually about 18 ml.100 g-1.min-1, but ranged from 7 ml.100g-1.min-1 (after the administration of indomethacin to a very preterm infant) to 33 ml.100 g-1.min-1 in a birth-asphyxiated post-term infant.

A comparison of the binding properties of myoglobin and cytochrome c shows that the latter, in the reduced state, has an unusually large affinity for ligands, including thioethers. This explains the outstanding stability of the methionine-iron bond of ferrous cytochrome c, and results from the intrinsic ability of the cytochrome c iron to delocalize its electrons into orbitals of the sixth axial ligand.

Nonimmune hydrops fetalis may be associated with an elevated amniotic fluid delta OD450. Cases of I-cell disease (mucolipidosis II), lethal multiple pterygium syndrome, and alpha-thalassemia are presented, each associated with nonimmune hydrops fetalis and an elevated delta OD450. An elevated delta OD450 does not always indicate isoimmunization, and may be due to increased red blood cell turnover for a variety of reasons associated with nonimmune hydrops fetalis.

A color television display was used to measure thresholds for mixtures of red and green on a white background; red and green components could be either incremental, decremental or zero. A simple colorimetric method for the assay of microamounts of dolichol is described. It is based essentially on the Chugaev color reaction. The procedure allows the rapid (1 h after purification of the sample, less than half a day for the whole procedure) and reliable (% SE less than or equal to 5%) determination of dolichol and dolichyl derivatives in the microgram range.
