Long-term neurostructural and psychological effects of war stress in two generations of civilians from the former Yugoslavia.

The long-term neurobiological and psychological effects of war-related stress on civilians remain understudied. This study focuses on survivors of the war in the former Yugoslavia (G1) who now reside in the Czech Republic and on the children of survivors (G2) who were born after the conflict. Participants from G1, G2, and a control group (CG) with no war experience underwent structural MRI, answered a semi-structured interview, and completed psychological questionnaires (PTGI, PCL-5, SWSL, MSPSS, Brief-COPE). Voxel-based morphometry was used to assess brain volume differences. Compared to CG,

Understanding Socioeconomic and Psychological Vulnerabilities in Post-Disaster Recovery: Insights from the Displaced New Orleans Residents Survey.

Communities susceptible to disasters frequently endure severe socio-economic and psychological repercussions. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly understand the various vulnerabilities encountered by different groups. Residents of New Orleans, Louisiana, faced significant hardships after Hurricane Katrina hit on 29 August 2005. A multitude of individuals lost their residences, while others, regrettably, lost family members. The Displaced New Orleans Residents Survey (DNORS) offered significant insights into individuals and households living in New Orleans immediately prior to Hurricane Ka

Cumulative trauma exposure and cardiac autonomic stress reactivity in healthy adults.

Background: Exposure to traumatic events has been linked to alterations in autonomic stress regulation. While research has primarily focused on clinical populations, less is known about the physiological correlates of cumulative trauma exposure in non-clinical samples. Objective: The present study investigated whether cumulative lifetime exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is associated with altered cardiovascular stress reactivity in healthy individuals. Methods: Sixty-one participants without indications of PTSD completed a standardised speech task, while heart rate variability (HR

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms, parenting stress, and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee mother-child dyads in Türkiye: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Refugee children exposed to war and forced displacement are at elevated risk for emotional, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties. However, child outcomes may be shaped not only by direct trauma exposure but also by the psychological functioning of caregivers and stress within the parent-child relationship. The present mixed-methods study examined whether parenting stress was associated with the relationship between maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee families living in Mardin, Türkiye. METHODS: Participants w

Behavioral and metabolic effects of escapable electric foot shock stress in male mice.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not fully understood, prompting research using animal models. One of the approaches to induce PTSD-like traits in rodents involves exposure to unavoidable, unpredictable electric foot shocks. This study explored the effects of repeated electric foot shocks on behavior, hematology, and metabolic parameters in male C57BL/6J mice. The mice were subjected to 15 electrical stimuli (each 0.8 mA for 10 s, 10 s interval between sessions) in an electric foot shock apparatus featuring metal floor bars and two insulating bars for

Exploration of stress reactivity and fear conditioning on intrusive memory frequency in a conditioned-intrusion paradigm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The conditioned-intrusion paradigm was designed to provide insight into the relationship between fear conditioning and intrusive memory formation, which is relevant to understanding posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and treatment. However, boundary conditions of this new paradigm have not been explored and it is currently not known whether findings from this work are valid in a clinical context. METHODS: In the current study, we explored the relationship between stress reactivity to trauma film clips, usual exposure to violent media, renewal of fear conditionin

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Suicidal ideation, and Stress: The Moderating Role of Dysfunctional and Recovery Cognitions.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and stressor-related behavioral health conditions are prevalent in military populations and have become a major public health concern in recent years. Individuals who commonly report suicidal ideation often have comorbid mental health diagnoses (i.e., posttraumatic stress disorder; PTSD). However, the mechanisms associated with stress, suicidal ideation, and PTSD are unclear. METHOD: The present study examined the moderating role of dysfunctional and recovery cognitions between (i) PTSD and suicidal ideation, and (ii) stress and suicidal ideation in two distinct samples. The role of estrogen receptor manipulation during traumatic stress on changes in emotional memory induced by traumatic stress.

RATIONALE: Traumatic stress leads to persistent fear, which is a core feature of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Women are more likely than men to develop PTSD after trauma exposure, which suggests women are differentially sensitive to traumatic stress. However, it is unclear how this differential sensitivity manifests. Cyclical changes in vascular estrogen release could be a contributing factor where levels of vascular estrogens (and activation of estrogen receptors) at the time of traumatic stress alter the impact of traumatic stress. METHODS: To examine this, we manipulated estrogen

High prevalence of fibromyalgia syndrome among Israeli nurses.

OBJECTIVES: Stress has extensively been shown to trigger fibromyalgia syndrome (FM). Nursing is associated with high levels of stress. Our hypothesis was that nurses suffer from an increased prevalence of FM symptoms, and that these symptoms correlate with the levels of stress to which they are exposed in the course of their occupation. METHODS: The study was conducted as a targeted survey distributed to nursing staff in Soroka University Medical Centre, Beer-Sheva, Israel. Participants were asked to answer a questionnaire evaluating symptoms of FM, based on the current diagnostic criteria, w

Do adolescent offspring of women with PTSD experience higher levels of chronic and episodic stress?

Offspring of mothers with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at higher risk for a range of negative developmental outcomes, including differing forms of psychopathology. This study suggests that the multigenerational impact of trauma may be partially attributed to increased levels of stress experienced by these offspring during childhood and adolescence. Diagnostic interviews were conducted with over 800 women and their offspring. Experiences of stress were assessed using multiple measures. Results indicate that offspring of mothers with PTSD or high levels of PTSD symptoms experienced h

The potential role of hypocortisolism in the pathophysiology of PTSD and psoriasis.

Different physical, chemical and psychological stressors can provoke a unique but different endocrine response involving activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Inability of adequate compensatory reaction can lead to many disorders. The aim of our study was comparison of cortisol values in diseases provoked by various stressors. Our investigation included 34 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients, as an example of disorder caused by extremely strong, acute stressful stimulus, 19 psoriatic patients, as an example of chronic stress stimulus and 17 healthy volunteers. Perinatal stressors as predictors of symptoms of posttraumatic stress in mothers of infants at high risk.

We investigated the relationship between the stress of a high-risk birth and the development of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder in mothers. Six measures of perinatal stressors (gestational age of the baby, birth weight, length of hospital stay for the baby, a postnatal complications rating for the infant, and Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes) were used to predict the frequency of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Severity of infant complications, gestational age, and length of stay accounted for 35% of the variance in reports of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Both mothers of premature in

Elevated systemic expression of ER stress related genes is associated with stress-related mental disorders in the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study.

BACKGROUND: The role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response in mental illness is not well understood. Human studies and animal models of depression show elevated brain ER stress response. In addition, some ER stress associated disorders (e.g. cardiovascular disease) show higher rates of depression compared to the general population, raising the possibility that ER stress response contributes to depression risk. It remains unknown, however, if ER stress response is present among individuals suffering from other stress-related mental illness, and whether such a response would be evident i

[Antipsychotics: treatment of schizophrenia and other therapeutic options].

Antipsychotics are used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychoses, as well as bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and specific types of personality disorders. Due to better tolerability, as well as some advantages of the pharmacological profile, the second-generation antipsychotics are preferred in clinical practice. A special place among antipsychotics is taken by sulpiride, which shows the ability to improve the condition of patients with different types of mental disorders as well as with internal diseases.

Lifelong consequences of brain injuries during development: From risk to resilience.

Traumatic brain injuries in children represent a major public health issue and even relatively mild injuries can have lifelong consequences. However, the outcomes from these injuries are highly heterogeneous, with most individuals recovering fully, but a substantial subset experiencing prolonged or permanent disabilities across a number of domains. Moreover, brain injuries predispose individuals to other kinds of neuropsychiatric and somatic illnesses. Critically, the severity of the injury only partially predicts subsequent outcomes, thus other factors must be involved. In this review, we dis
