We investigated 161 children under 24 months of age by CT of the skull and reviewed the anamnestic and clinical history. 87 children showed subdural effusions, and 74 did not. There were 33 patients with other pathological findings in CT, and 41 had normal scans. Age and sex distribution as well as localization of the subdural effusions were consistent with the literature. The 87 children with subdural effusions represented 1.7% in a sample of about 5.000 CT scans. CT was the most reliable method for diagnosis of subdural effusions, compared to other techniques. There was a preponderance of sm

BACKGROUND: Main pancreatic duct (MPD) dilation is a high-risk stigmata/worrisome feature of malignancy in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). The threshold of MPD diameter in predicting malignancy may be related to the lesion location. This study aimed to separately identify the thresholds of MPD for malignancy of IPMNs separately for the head-neck and body-tail.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 185 patients with pathologically confirmed IPMNs were included. Patient demographic information, clinical data, and pathological features were obtained from the medical records. Those

BACKGROUND: Renal transplantation is an effective treatment for end-stage renal disease, which involves pathophysiologic processes such as ischemia-reperfusion injury and immune rejection. The degree of ischemia-reperfusion injury is closely related to the functional state of the transplanted kidney. At present, the allogeneic kidney transplantation model has been widely used in related research. The traditional kidney transplantation model has the disadvantages of complicated vascular anastomosis, difficulty in ureteral reconstruction. The aim of this study was to establish a rat autologous o

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if preoperative imaging features from CT at mass-forming intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (MF-iCCA) are related to histo-pathologic factors, and to evaluate if those associations can be used to construct an imaging score to predict postoperative recurrence.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with MF-iCCA who underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced CT at two centers between September 2017 and December 2025 were retrospectively reviewed by two radiologists. After independent annotation of 16 imaging features, univariate and multivariate regression analyses were p

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy occurs in response to a variety of physiological and pathological stimuli. While pathological hypertrophy in heart failure is usually coupled with depressed contractile function, physiological hypertrophy associates with increased contractility. In the present study, we explored whether 8 weeks of moderate intensity exercise training would lead to a cardiac anti-remodelling effect in an experimental model of heart failure associated with a deactivation of a pathological (calcineurin/NFAT, CaMKII/HDAC) or activation of a physiological (Akt-mTOR) hypertrophy signalling

The purpose of this study is to compare transvaginal sonographic endometrial assessment with histology obtained by endometrial curettage in postmenopausal patients and to determine a cut-off point for endometrial thickness to reduce unnecessary diagnostic curettage for postmenopausal bleeding. A total number of 289 postmenopausal women were studied prospectively; 192 patients with postmenopausal bleeding and 97 postmenopausal women without bleeding comprised the study and control groups respectively. All patients were scanned by ultrasound transvaginally, then dilatation and curettage was perf

Eosinophilic cholangitis (EC) has a low clinical incidence, and cases with definitive pathological confirmation are extremely rare. Due to the lack of specificity in clinical and radiologic features, EC is frequently misdiagnosed as cholangiocarcinoma. We report a 65-year-old man admitted with progressive jaundice and persistent dull right upper-quadrant abdominal pain for more than 1 month. Laboratory tests showed a markedly elevated peripheral blood eosinophil count, significantly elevated bilirubin levels, and elevated tumor markers. MRI revealed intra- and extrahepatic bile duct dilatation

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIδ (CaMKIIδ), encoded by the Camk2d gene, plays key regulatory roles in various Ca2+-regulated cellular processes. Extensive alternative splicing of the Camk2d gene generates multiple CaMKIIδ splice variants that exhibit differential roles. Despite significant advances in understanding the functions of CaMKIIδ, the full repertoire of Camk2d splice variants in a variety of tissues and their distinct roles in physiological and pathological contexts remain incompletely characterized due to the complex nature of multiple alternative splicing events. Placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) is an uncommon placental lesion, which may mimic molar pregnancy at gross and microscopic examination. PMD can be associated with fetal growth restriction, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, intrauterine fetal death, and preterm delivery. Nonetheless, it may also be associated with a normal appearing fetus. We aimed to emphasize that clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists should be aware of PMD as one of the etiologies of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). We presented the case of a 27-year-old gravida 1, para 1 woman who was admitted to Ayatollah Rouha

Lymph node (LN) lipomatosis is a common but rarely discussed phenomenon associated with aging that involves a gradual exchange of the LN parenchyma into adipose tissue. The mechanisms behind these changes and the effects on the LN are unknown. We show that LN lipomatosis starts in the medullary regions of the human LN and link the initiation of lipomatosis to transdifferentiation of LN fibroblasts into adipocytes. The latter is associated with a downregulation of lymphotoxin beta expression. We also show that isolated medullary and CD34+ fibroblasts, in contrast to the reticular cells of the T

Myosin is vital for body movement and heart contractility. Mutations in MYH7, encoding slow/β-cardiac myosin heavy chain, are an important cause of hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy, as well as skeletal muscle disease. A dominant missense mutation (R1845W) in MYH7 has been reported in several unrelated cases of myosin storage myopathy. We have developed a Drosophila model for a myosin storage myopathy in order to investigate the dose-dependent mechanisms underlying the pathological roles of the R1845W mutation. This study shows that a higher expression level of the mutated allele is conc

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality globally, so further investigation is required to identify its underlying mechanisms and potential targets for its prevention. The transcription factor p53 functions as a gatekeeper, regulating a myriad of genes to maintain normal cell functions. It has received a great deal of research attention as a tumor suppressor. In the past three decades, evidence has also shown a regulatory role for p53 in the heart. Basal p53 is essential for embryonic cardiac development; it is also necessary to maintain normal heart architecture and

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac masses have a wide range of etiologies with the most common being thrombi and less commonly tumors. However, in Sub-Saharan Africa other etiologies not commonly seen in developed countries such as endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) must be considered. EMF is a disease process associated with poverty, a poor diet, and eosinophilia although its pathology is poorly understood.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 53-year-old male with a history of dilated cardiomyopathy who presented to a Ugandan Emergency Department in respiratory distress. Bedside echocardiography was performed

Pompe disease (PD) is caused by lysosomal glycogen accumulation in tissues, including muscles and the central nervous system (CNS). The intravenous infusion of recombinant human acid alpha-glucosidase (rhGAA) rescues the muscle pathologies in PD but does not treat the CNS because rhGAA does not cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). To understand the CNS pathologies in PD, control and PD mice were followed and analyzed at 9 and 18 months with brain structural and ultrastructural studies. T2-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed the progressive dilatation of the lateral ventr
