Ammodytoxin (Atx) is a snake venom phospholipase A2 (sPLA2s) with presynaptic toxicity, anticoagulant activity and the ability to influence cell cycle progression. These multiple physiological activities make this molecule a promising tool for studying processes influenced by the highly homologous mammalian sPLA2s-for example cell proliferation and apoptosis. Vascular apoptosis-inducing proteins (VAPs) from hemorrhagic snake venom are apoptosis-inducing toxins targeting vascular endothelial cells. A novel polypeptide, designated omega-Lsp-IA, which modulates P-type Ca(2+) channels, was purified from the venom of the spider Geolycosa sp. omega-Lsp-IA contains 47 amino acid residues and 4 intramolecular disulfide bridges. In the present work, we purified and characterized a novel toxin named hemicalcin from the venom of the Iranian chactoid scorpion Hemiscorpius lepturus where it represents 0.6% of the total protein content. Highly ordered films were prepared by spreading out carbon disulfide (CS) solutions of ionomers over inorganic surfaces and for the first time over an organic surface. These ionomers, hydrophobic homopolymers or copolymers end-capped by a cationic group, were easily synthesized in a one-step reaction by a control radical process called nitroxide-mediated polymerization. UNLABELLED: Gastrokine-2 (GKN2) is a secretory peptide of human gastric surface mucous cells (SMCs). It forms disulfide-linked heterodimers with the trefoil factor family (TFF) peptide TFF1. The soluble venom from the scorpion Androctonus crassicauda was fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography. At least 44 different sub-fractions were resolved and collected for finger print mass analysis using an electrospray mass spectrometer. The Venezuelan scorpion Tityus discrepans is known to cause human fatalities. We describe the first complete proteomic analysis of its venom. By HPLC 58 different fractions were obtained and 205 different components were identified by MS analysis. Components having molecular masses from 272 to 57 908 amu were found. Glutaredoxin (Grx) is a small, heat-stable protein acting as a multi-functional glutathione-dependent disulfide oxidoreductase. In this work, a gene encoding the monothiol glutaredoxin Grx4 was cloned from the genomic DNA of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. This study examined volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentration in ambient air collected during the years 2000--2003 at several different locations of Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) in Taiwan. A canister automated GC-MS system analyzed the volatile organics in ambient air grasp samples according to T0-15 method. The post-translational modification of an L- to a D-amino acid has been documented in relatively few gene products, mostly in small peptides under 10 amino acids in length. We investigated the histopathological effects of excess L-cysteine on the male rat reproductive tract during sexual maturation. Male 6-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally daily with L-cysteine, 1,000 mg/kg body weight, for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks.
