Electrocochleographic recordings were made in 17 patients with Menièr's disease before and immediately after exposure to pressure applications in their middle ear. Rupture of the tympanic membrane (TM) during ear irrigation is a rare but unhappy event. In this study the maximum overpressures obtained in the deep part of the external auditory meatus (EAM) during ear irrigation were measured postmortem in 20 cadavers. The highest pressures were obtained in normal- or wide-dimension EAMs when a metal syringe was used. With this device, the median maximum overpressure was 240 mmHg (range 200-300 mmHg). BACKGROUND: The aim of the present report is to briefly discuss the possible underlying diseases in a syndrome of nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis and vestibuloauditory symptoms.
PATIENT: A 46-year-old patient presented with interstitial keratitis, vestibuloauditory hearing reduction and necrotising atrophy of the nasal septum.
RESULTS: Clinical tests for lues, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and autoimmune diseases were negative.
CONCLUSION: For clinical aspects Cogan's syndrome in association with an initial phase of Wegener's granulomatosis are discussed as possible underlying diseases.

Effects of explosions of different intensities on cortical response threshold (CRT) and activities of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) in the inner ear were studied on 37 guinea pigs. The results revealed various degrees of cochlear damages due to different doses of explosions, and also a negative correlation between hearing loss and the enzyme activities in both TTS and PTS. The significance of the results is discussed.

The authors investigated the influence of facial tonsillar hypertrophy to physical growth, and diseases of the nose and the ear for 7190 pupils of elementary schools in nine different areas in Japan. Tonsillar hypertrophy seemed to prevent physical growth of pupils of lower grades.
