Identical twin girls with the xerodermic idiocy syndrome (xeroderma pigmentosum, neurological complications, and mental retardation) are described. Monozygosity was established by clinical features, blood types, and dermatoglyphics. Biochemical studies were normal but an electroencephalogram showed diffuse disturbance of cerebral function in both twins. Their bone age was retarded by about two years. A skin biopsy showed hyperkeratosis, atrophy of the rete ridges and hyperpigmentation of the basal cells, but no malignant change. The absence of malignant change was thought to be due to avoidanc

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) are a group of lymphoproliferative disorders of skin-homing T cells causing chronic inflammation. These disorders cause impairment of the immune environment, which leads to severe infections and/or sepsis due to dysbiosis. In this study, we elucidated the host-microbial interaction in CTCL that occurs during the phototherapeutic treatment regime and determined whether modulation of the skin microbiota could beneficially affect the course of CTCL. EL4 T-cell lymphoma cells were intradermally grafted on the back of C57BL/6 mice. Animals were treated with convent

Chronic inflammatory placental disorders are a group of rare but devastating gestational syndromes associated with adverse pregnancy outcome. This review focuses on three related conditions: villitis of unknown etiology (VUE), chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI) and massive perivillous fibrin deposition (MPFD). The hallmark of these disorders is infiltration of the placental architecture by maternal immune cells and disruption of the intervillous space, where gas exchange between the mother and fetus occurs. Currently, they can only be detected through histopathological examination of th

Acromegalic patients always demonstrate a wide range of clinic manifestations, including typical physical changes such as acral and facial features, as well as untypical neuropsychiatric and psychological disturbances. However, there is still a lack of clinical guidance on the treatment for acromegalic patients with psychiatric comorbidities. We therefore share this case to provide a reference for clinicians to manage the acromegalic patients with psychiatric symptoms. This case report describes a 41-year-old male with an 8-year history of acromegaly due to growth hormone-secreting pituitary a

Suspicion of alcohol's teratogenic potential stretches back many centuries, but it is only recently that solid support for this possibility has been produced. There is now little doubt that alcohol can produce developmental defects, but there are many questions that still remain to be answered concerning the impact of alcohol on the conceptus. One major question that remains to be resolved is why only a small percentage of alcoholic women give birth to children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), whereas other alcoholic women who drink the same amount do not. Another important issue concerns th

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is an abnormal growth process that results in the development of mandibular asymmetry. The aetiopathogenesis of this entity is still unclear. Various factors including hormonal influences, intrauterine factors, trauma, infection, and genetics have been speculated to lead to the development of UCH. In genetic epidemiology, twins have been a valuable resource for investigating the genetic basis of complex traits and diseases. We present a case of mirror-image UCH in a pair of monozygotic twins, providing evidence of a possible genetic link for this mandibula

Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare congenital disorder, characterized by a wide spectrum of signs and symptoms, which vary significantly between affected individuals. The understanding of the genetic basis of the phenotype has advanced greatly during the past decades. Together with the typical clinical picture intrauterine growth retardation and severe short stature are the key features. Failure to thrive in conjunction with frequent feeding problems in infancy and early childhood are a major challenge for the parents. In parallel to the genetic research, medical care of these children im

Williams-Beuren syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by congenital heart defects, abnormal facial features, mental retardation with specific cognitive and behavioral profile, growth hormone deficiency, renal and skeletal anomalies, inguinal hernia, infantile hypercalcaemia. We report a case with Williams-Beuren syndrome associated with a single kidney and nephrocalcinosis complicated by hypercalcaemia. A male infant, aged 20 months presented growth retardation associated with a psychomotor impairment, dysmorphic features and nephrocalcinosis. He had also hypercalciuria

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing disorder of unknown etiology, which is believed to be multifactorial. Recently, the incidence of pediatric IBD has steeply increased in Korea since 2000. Poorly controlled disease activity can result in complications such as intestinal fistulae, abscess, and stricture, as well as growth retardation and delayed puberty in children. Because of a lack of confirmative tests, various diagnostic modalities must be used to diagnose IBD. Onset age, location, behavior, and activity are important in selecting treatments. Monogenic IBD must be exclu

Mutations in genes encoding either hamartin [TSC1 (tuberous sclerosis complex 1)] or tuberin (TSC2) result in a multisystem disorder characterized by the development of benign tumours and hamartomas in several organs. The TSC1 and TSC2 proteins form a complex that lies at the crossroad of many signalling pathways integrating the energy status of the cell with signals induced by nutrients and growth factors. The TSC1/2 complex is a critical negative regulator of mTORC1 [mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) complex 1], and by that controls anabolic processes to promote cell growth, proliferation

Rett syndrome (RS) is an incurable neurological disorder that occurs in females. Although the biological basis is unknown, there is substantial evidence suggesting a genetic basis. RS is characterized by an initial period of apparently normal psychomotor development followed by loss of communication skills and purposeful hand movement. Then, hand stereotypies, gait dyspraxia, and deceleration of head growth become apparent. Other problems include growth failure and epilepsy. There is no biological marker for RS; the diagnosis is based on well-delineated clinical criteria. The prevalence of RS

Pfeiffer syndrome (PS) is one of the classic autosomal dominant craniosynostosis syndromes with craniofacial anomalies and characteristic broad thumbs and big toes. We have previously mapped one of the genes for PS to the centromeric region of chromosome 8 by linkage analysis. Here we present evidence that mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR1) gene, which maps to 8p, cause one form of familial Pfeiffer syndrome. A C to G transversion in exon 5, predicting a proline to arginine substitution in the putative extracellular domain, was identified in all affected members of fi
