Self-concept and attributions about other women in women with a history of childhood sexual abuse.

Self-concept literature and literature on childhood sexual abuse (CSA) suggests that women with a history of CSA may have particular ways of perceiving themselves, which, as well as impacting upon relationships within their everyday lives, may also have implications for therapy; whether this is on an individual basis or within a group. This research investigated self-concept and attributions about other women using an adapted version of the self-concept sorting task. Three groups of women were compared: women with a history of CSA, women experiencing depressed mood but without a history of CSA

It's all about "connecting": reasons for drug use among Latino gay men living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Research on Latino gay men drug use is limited. This study explores the narratives of 16 Latino drug-using gay men living in the San Francisco Bay Area by exploring the role social settings play in their drug use, as well as by identifying the reasons and motivations for drug-use. Using a thematic content analysis, 16 interviews with LGM living in the San Francisco Bay Area were analyzed. Results suggest LGMhave different reasons for drug use across multiple settings. Participants use drugs to cope with their sexual identity, to feel like part of the mainstream gay community, and to reduce sex

Social competence and conduct problems in young children: issues in assessment.

Examined the differences in various facets of social competence in 2 groups of young children (ages 4-7 years)--a clinic-referred group of aggressive children (N = 60) diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder or conduct problems and a matched comparison group of typically developing children (N = 60). Four aspects of social competence were assessed: social information processing, actual observations of conflict management skills and social play interactions during peer interactions, positive social interactions with mothers and fathers at home, and teacher reports of social competence. The

"I didn't do it alone": Family involvement in recovery from substance use.

INTRODUCTION: Family involvement has been identified as pivotal in addressing substance use disorder (SUD). However, family members, and the clinicians supporting them, are often uncertain about how best to help or be involved. The purpose of this study was to examine how those in recovery perceived family involvement in their recovery journey. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals (n = 18) who identified as being in recovery from SUD. Interviews focused on specific practices that are perceived as helpful or hindering to recovery. The Enhanced Critical Incident Tec

Homicide-suicide: current evidence, risk assessment, and medico-legal implications in forensic psychiatry.

Homicide-suicide is a rare but highly impactful form of lethal violence characterized by the convergence of suicidality, interpersonal aggression, and psychopathology. This narrative review summarizes current evidence regarding epidemiology, major subtypes, interpretative models, psychiatric and relational risk factors, risk assessment strategies, prevention approaches, and medico-legal implications within forensic psychiatry. Available data suggest that homicide-suicide represents a distinct phenomenon rather than the mere succession of homicide and suicide, most frequently occurring in intra

Outgroup emotion processing in the vACC is modulated by childhood trauma and CACNA1C risk variant.

A high frequency of outgroup contact-as experienced by urban dwellers and migrants-possibly increases schizophrenia risk. This risk might be further amplified by genetic and environmental risk factors, such as the A-allele of rs1006737 within the calcium voltage-gated channel subunit alpha1 C gene and childhood interpersonal trauma (CIT). Both have been related to ventral anterior cingulate cortex (vACC) functioning. We investigated vACC functioning, during ingroup and outgroup emotion perception in relation to rs1006737 and CIT. Group membership was manipulated through a minimal group paradig

Correlates of social support receipt.

Psychological correlates of social support receipt were examined in an investigation of stress and coping among 150 middle-aged community residents. Subjects were interviewed monthly for 6 months, each time concerning a specific stressful situation in the previous month. Social support received and methods of coping were assessed each time, as well as other variables. Factors hypothesized to be associated with support receipt were person predispositions, appraisal patterns with regard to specific stressful encounters, and coping strategies used. Each was most strongly associated with a particu

Strength in families: Parental resilience, marital dynamics, and adolescent anxiety and substance use.

Drawing on Luthar's relational framework of resilience, this study examines how parental resilience operates within marital dynamics to shape adolescent adjustment in Mexican-origin families. Using four waves of data from 604 families (Madolage = 12.41, SD = 0.97; 54.3% girls), we tested a longitudinal cascade linking W1 parental resilience to W4 adolescent anxiety and substance use via W2 marital warmth, W3 marital satisfaction, and W3 adolescents' perceptions of interparental conflict. Actor-partner interdependence models revealed both intrapersonal and interpersonal pathways: wives' resilie

Superwoman schema, socioeconomic status, and self-reported disease activity: The Black Women's Experiences Living with Lupus (BeWELL) study.

Superwoman Schema is a multidimensional framework that describes how Black women manage interpersonal and societal roles. This cross-sectional study examined how patterns of Superwoman Schema subscales (obligations to manifest strength, suppress emotions, resist vulnerability, and help others, and intense motivation to succeed) and socioeconomic status (SES; perceived financial strain, income-to-poverty ratio, and education) related to self-reported disease activity among 437 Black women in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Psychological and neural correlates of social affect and cognition in narcissism: A multimethod study of self-reported traits, experiential states, and behavioral and brain indicators.

"Lack of empathy" is a diagnostic criterion of narcissism, but the nature of interpersonal functioning in narcissism is still being debated. Both, empathy and narcissism, are multidimensional constructs, and their relation might depend upon contextual factors. We investigated social affect and cognition in narcissism spanning self-reported traits and experiential states (Ecological Momentary Assessment) as well as behavioral and brain indicators (task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging). N = 140 individuals were selected to cover the full dimensional range of grandiose and vulnerabl

Suicide in veterinary medicine: A literature review.

Veterinarians are commonly exposed to occupational stressors, including excessive workload and financial constraints. These stressors can lead to psychological distress, which typically results in mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and burnout and can even culminate in suicide attempts or suicide deaths. Risk factors associated with poor mental health and high rates of suicide in veterinary practitioners include continuous exposure to challenging scenarios, such as interpersonal conflicts, performing euthanasia, and easy access to lethal means of suicide, such as opioids and

Psychopathy and Sexual Aggression: Management Implications.

The current study explored the association between psychopathic traits and release suitability decisions and examined the role of Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) and Static-99 in predicting general and sexual recidivism. The sample included 207 adult male sex offenders involved in the long-term follow-up at the Massachusetts Treatment Center for Sexually Dangerous Persons (MTC) in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Contrary to our expectations, PCL-R Factor 2 (Lifestyle/Antisocial) scores were positively associated with being selected for gradual release, whereas PCL-R Factor 1 (Interpersonal/A

Hikikomori: a systemic-relational analysis.

Over the past 40 years, Japan has spread a definite condition: hikikomori. The term derives from hiku, "pull back", and komoru, "island", and describes a form of voluntary social withdrawal that involves adolescents. These subjects avoid social commitment, school education and friendships with an associated digital dependence. The causes identified depend on a cultural/educational and family system in which individual identity is subordinated to social identity, causing isolation. Early identification of hikikomori and above all its differentiation from other syndromes appears necessary to avo

Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome/Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome, and Later Child Development Research: Shortcomings and Solutions.

: The opioid epidemic has brought with it an increasing focus on the incidence of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) (also known as Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome) in neonates prenatally exposed to opioids, and recently, in the putative long-term effects of NAS on child development. The purpose of the present paper is three-fold: (1) outline shortcomings regarding the current research relating NAS to child development; (2) propose solutions to minimize these shortcomings; and (3) recommend an alternative conceptual framework to understanding developmental problems in later childhood presu

Emotion-related regulatory difficulties contribute to negative psychological outcomes in active-duty Iraq war soldiers with and without posttraumatic stress disorder.

Data suggest military personnel involved in U.S. military initiatives in Iraq and Afghanistan are returning from deployment with elevated rates of mental health diagnoses, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to examine difficulties with emotion regulation as a potential contributory mechanism by which soldiers have poorer psychological outcomes, such as depression, dissociation, alcohol abuse, and interpersonal difficulties. Participants were 44 active-duty male service members who comprised three groups, including those deployed with and without diagnosed

A norm-referenced longitudinal study of medical student drinking patterns.

The alcohol consumption patterns of a single class of 121 medical students was assessed at six points over the course of 4 years of medical school training, along with other measures of drinking-related impairment, family history of alcoholism, personality, and psychosocial functioning. Research Diagnostic Criteria were applied to make diagnoses of alcoholism. Eleven percent of the class reported drinking at a level considered "heavy" by class social norms, most transiently. Eighteen percent of the class met criteria for alcohol abuse by virtue of drinking-related impairment during medical sch
