BACKGROUND: In patients presenting with rapidly progressive dementia, prion disease may enter the differential diagnosis. The commonest malignancies masquerading as prion disease are primary CNS lymphoma and intravascular large B-cell lymphoma, both rare and difficult to diagnose without brain biopsy.
CASE PRESENTATION: This 82-year-old lady with a past history of hypertension, presented with rapidly progressive cognitive impairment and ataxia. The possibility of sCJD was raised. Brain biopsy was carried out. Western blot for prion protein was negative. Brain biopsy showed intravascular large

Primary cardiac neoplasms are rare. However, among them, cardiac myxoma is the most common tumor. In contrast, primary cardiac lymphoma within a cardiac myxoma is extremely rare and might be difficult to diagnose because of non-specific clinical manifestations. We report the case of a previously healthy 52-year-old man who presented with acute onset of transient dysarthria and left hemiplegia. A transthoracic echocardiography showed a 6×2.5-cm solid mass in the left atrium, which was subsequently resected. Histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular analyses revealed an EBV-associated CD3

We report a 68-years-old woman with systemic sclerosis and interstitial pneumonia (IP). She had developed subacute progressively encephalopathy and dementia while treated with oral cyclophosphamide and prednisolone. She admitted to our hospital because of syncope. Laboratory tests indicated slight elevated cerebrospinal fluid protein, and levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), levels of soluble IL-2 receptor was normal. But, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed multiple infarct-like lesions mainly in the white matter, which mimics progressive multiple leukoencephalopathy (PM

A 50-year-old man visited a physician due to continued right hypochondrium pain for a period of about two months. He was diagnosed with cholecystitis and was referred to our hospital. On arrival, he presented with mild tenderness in the right upper quadrant. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed small gallstones and a thickened gallbladder wall. At the same time, a low-density area expanding from the gallbladder bed was revealed. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) showed a smooth stricture of the common hepatic duct. We suspected chronic cholecystitis and inflammatory chang

A 76-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with severe diarrhea and syncope. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a mass 7 cm in diameter mimicking a seminal vesicle tumor and magnetic resonance imaging showed a heterogeneously enhanced mass with an unclear borderline to the rectum. The differential diagnosis of the lesion included a tumor arising from a seminal vesicle, a local recurrence of rectal cancer, a rectal GIST, and a mesenchymal tumor. Transrectal needle biopsy revealed non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma (diffuse large B cell lymphoma). Chest and abdominal CT showed no specif

OBJECTIVE: We report the event of an atypical presentation of primary bladder lymphoma, treated in our hospital, and review the literature of such tumors, representing 0.2% of bladder tumors, being macroscopic hematuria with clots the most frequent reason for patient consultation.
METHODS: We report the case of an 83 years old man who went to the emergency room because of oligoanuria of 48 hours of evolution. He was diagnosed of bladder tumor.
RESULTS: The pathology turned out to be a primary bladder lymphoma cell B.
CONCLUSIONS: Primary bladder lymphoma is a rare entity that presents a sim

A 55 years female presented with a breast lump was diagnosed by cytology (FNAC) to be non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Other pre-operative diagnostic procedures followed by post-operative biopsy examination were carried out. We report this case with discussion on diagnosis and special emphasis on cyto-diagnosis.

A range of oral manifestations in a patient who was subsequently confirmed as infected with the human immune deficiency virus are presented. Most of these lesions have been previously reported in the literature, and represent opportunistic infection changes resulting from immune deficiency. The rare occurrence of a malignant large cell lymphoma intra-orally in this patient is also reported. The need for clinicians to treat all oral lesions as potentially infective and to wear gloves routinely is stressed.

Adriamycin (Doxorubicin) is an important chemotherapeutic agent, but is limited in its clinical usefulness by dose-related cardiomyopathy. Attempts are being made to reduce this toxicity while retaining anti-tumor activity. These include development of chemically modified anthracycline derivatives and coupling of adriamycin to or into macromolecular carriers. We and several other laboratories have shown that entrapment of adriamycin in liposomes (phospholipid vesicles) can reduce toxicity while retaining or, in some cases, enhancing anti-tumor activity. Here we report further results of experi

Differentiating between primary and ectopic or pseudohyperparathyroidism may be difficllt, but certain aspects of the patient's clinical history as well as laboratory tests may be helpful. We present an unusual case report of a patient who had massive splenomegaly secondary to a localized histiocytic lymphoma. On the basis of a lower serum parathormone level for a given serum calcium increase combined with normal serum phosphorous and chloride values, the diagnosis of psuedohyperparathyroidism was made and was confirmed when the patient's serum calcium level and temperature returned to normal
