The first total synthesis of a marine natural product, exigurin, has been accomplished in 13 steps starting from (+)-menthone. The key intermediate (-)-10-epi-axisonitrile-3 was prepared by stereoselective intramolecular cyclopropanation followed by a cyclopropane ring opening reaction by the azide anion. The bioinspired Ugi reaction of (-)-10-epi-axisonitrile-3, formaldehyde, sarcosine and methanol successfully constructed the target exigurin in which its terpene and amino acid units were linked through an amide bond.

Three-component coupling of aldehydes, vinylcyclopropyl carbinols, and nitriles in the presence of 10 mol% TMSOTf at -40 to 0 °C in dichloromethane affords a novel class of (3-oxabicyclo[4.2.0]octanyl)amides in high yields with excellent selectivity, whereas (1-vinylcyclobutyl)methanol provides the corresponding (1-(5-aryltetrahydrofuran-3-yl)cyclobutyl)amides under similar conditions. This is the first report on the synthesis of oxabicycles through a sequential Prins/Wagner/Ritter process.

The solvation and the solvatochromic behavior of the 5-(methylthio)-5'-nitro-2,2'-bithiophene 1 in diethyl ether, dichloromethane, acetonitrile, methanol and formamide was theoretically investigated with an iterative molecular and quantum mechanics (QM/MM) approach. Calculated longest-wavelength solvatochromic absorption band of 1, obtained as averages of statistically uncorrelated configurations, including the solute and explicit solvent molecules of the first and second solvation layer, were in excellent agreement with the experimental results.

The leaves, stem bark, stem heart wood, root and tubers of Angiopteris evecta were successively extracted with petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and methanol. All the fractions exhibited a wider spectrum of antibacterial activity. The dichloromethane and ethyl acetate fractions of the leaves and stem bark were particularly good and were the only fractions exhibiting antifungal activity. All fractions of the tuber with the exception of petrol, exhibited very good antibacterial activity.

The neuroleptic drug levomepromazine (1, previously known as methotrimeprazine) is photolabile under UV-A and UV-B light in aerobic conditions. Irradiation of a methanol solution of this drug produces one photoproduct, resulting from the oxidation of 1 to its sulfoxide parent. It is demonstrated that photodegradation occurs via type II mechanism involving irreversible trapping of self-photogenerated singlet molecular oxygen. 1 shows a photohemolytic effect on human erythrocytes and photoinducers lipid peroxidation.

Aqueous and methanol extracts of fresh leaves of twenty desert plants of Rajasthan state were tested for their antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria Salmonella typhi, causal organism of typhoid fever in human beings. 10% concentrate extracts of leaves of various plant species were used for testing antibacterial potential. Five plant species were found to have inhibitory effect against the organism. Fagonia cretica leaf extracts were found most effective against Salmonella typhi.

Described is a method for the determination of orotic acid as its methyl ester in human urine. The method involves the use of solid-phase extraction to isolate pyrimidines from urine and derivatization with methanol and sulfuric acid, followed by isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography on a reversed-phase C18 column with UV absorbance detection. The assay is shown to be sufficiently sensitive for use in clinical investigations where elevated orotic acid excretion is suspected.

Reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography on a microBondapak C-18 Column has been used to separate and quantify acetanilide and its aromatic monohydroxy derivatives in the 2-, 3- and 4- positions. Separation was achieved within 22 min by using an isocratic mixture of 2-propanol: methanol: water, 8:18:74 (v/v). This method compares very favourably with other HPLC techniques already reported to separate acetanilide from the monohydroxy aromatic derivatives.

Methanol extracts of hydrolyzed expectorate samples from workers in a Söderberg potroom were evaluated by the Salmonella reversion assay. The expectorates from exposed workers--mostly from smokers, but also to a certain extent from nonsmokers--were mutagenic; however, the control samples from both smokers and nonsmokers were not. The positive results produced by the expectorate samples from the exposed smokers suggest a synergistic relationship between exposure to air pollution of the working atmosphere and smoking.

One sensitizer, a sterol, has previously been reported to be present in lanolin. In this study, a related substance, a sterol, with a molecular weight of 424 has been isolated. A few sensitive subjects did not react to this substance. Lanolin probably contains several sensitizers. Sensitization to lanolin in guinea pigs seems previously to have failed. In this study, a methanol extract of a lanolin preparation containing large amounts of sterols sensitized guinea pigs.

The title compound, C7H14O6, was prepared from an equimolar mixture of d- and l-sorbose (d:l = 1:1) by Fischer glycosidation in methanol and crystallized from water. The title compound crystallizes in the ortho-rhom-bic space group Pna21. The asymmetric unit contains one mol-ecule each of methyl α-d-sorboside and methyl α-l-sorboside. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a two-dimensional network parallel to (001).

The homogeneous hydrogenation of CO2 to value-added chemicals, such as formic acid and methanol, represents a promising pathway for carbon utilization and renewable energy storage. We have previously investigated the Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of CO2 to formate using a data-driven approach. In this concept, we present the essential advances in the homogeneous hydrogenation of CO2 catalyzed by Ru complexes, highlighting the application of descriptors and the potential of an intelligence-assisted data-driven approach.

A bis(trifluoromethyl)-substituted phosphinine undergoes reversible oxidative addition of primary and secondary alcohols at the low-coordinate phosphorus(III) atom. This unprecedented reactivity contrasts the general inertness of uncoordinated phosphinines toward protic substrates and provides a rare example of reversible alcohol activation mediated by a main-group element compound. DFT calculations suggest that a hydrogen-bonded methanol network enables the transformation, offering a new concept for dynamic E-H bond activation by electrophilic, aromatic phosphorus heterocycles.

A multi-step synthesis of the title compound has been devised. In spite of its P=C double bond, the compound does not react at 100 °C with methanol and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene. DFT calculations indicate a planar core, a long P=C double bond at 1.725 Å and a high-lying LUMO. Complexation can force the methoxy substituent to rotate out of the plane, thus restoring partly the double bond character of the P=C bond.

A mild procedure for the reduction of electron-deficient alkenes and carbonyl compounds is described. UVA irradiations of substituted maleimides with dispersions of titania (Aeroxide P25) in methanol/acetonitrile (1:9) solvent under dry anoxic conditions led to hydrogenation and production of the corresponding succinimides. Aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes were reduced to primary alcohols in similar titania photocatalyzed reactions. A mechanism is proposed which involves two proton-coupled electron transfers to the substrates at the titania surface.

The title compound [Na3(C11H6NO3)2(C2H3O2)] n , crystallized through diffusion of diethyl ether into methanol as needles. There are three crystallographically independent Na(+) cations present, each exhib-it-ing a distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry, two through coordination by five O atoms and one N atom, and one through coordination by six O atoms. A series of inter-molecular O⋯Na and N⋯Na contacts leads to the formation of chains along the a-axis direction.

The methanol extract of the flowers of Lagerstroemia parviflora Roxb (Family: Lythraceae) was investigated for its effect on a cough model induced by sulphur dioxide gas in mice. It exhibited significant antitussive activity when compared with the control in a dose-dependent manner. The extract (100, 200, 300 mg kg(-1)) showed maximum inhibition of cough reflex at 90 min after drug administration and the antitussive activity was comparable to that of codeine phosphate, a standard antitussive agent.

With increasing number of intoxications with some preparations at the same time there is a lack of literature data about chemical-toxicological research of psychostimulator mixture. The aim of the study was to analyze the possibility of identification of four preparations in the mixture. The thin-layer chromatography method was used. The most acceptable solvent systems were determined: ethylacetate-methanol-conc. ammonia hydroxide (40:4:2:25) and dioxane-benzenum-conc. ammonia hydroxide-acetone (28:14:2:25).

Methanol extract of Leucas lavandulaefolia (LLFE) was evaluated for different psychopharmacological profiles with various animal models in rats and mice. The extract showed a potential reduction in spontaneous activity and caused a significant decrease in exploratory behavioural pattern by the head dip and Y-maze test. It also showed a significant reduction in muscle relaxant activity by rotarod, 30 degrees inclined screen and traction tests. The extract showed a remarkable potentiation of pentobarbitone induced sleeping time in mice.

The application of supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide and modified carbon dioxide for the determination of fluconazole from an animal feed was studied. A fractional factorial design approach was used to examine the significant experimental variables for quantitative extraction of fluconazole. Gas chromatography with either flame ionisation or mass selective detection was used for quantitation of the extracts. The results indicated that modifier (methanol) had the greatest effect on the recovery of fluconazole from the animal feed.
